Random Thought Thread

It saddens me to see how the situation has turn south for you guys. I hope this will be all over for everyone soon.

You don’t really need hand sanitizer if you have access to soap (normal soap is fine) and water to wash your hands regularly. Just don’t touch your face with your hands until you washed them. This simple task can be very difficult to do but can definitely help reduce your chances of being infected. Leave the face mask for the medical workers to protect themselves. They need it more than anyone.

Social responsibility also play an important part. Stay at home if you are unwell. Isolation is the best way to contain the spreading of the virus. You never know what you thought the flu that you are having might turn out to be COVID19.

Take care everyone and stay safe.

Don, IIRC, you're in Singapore? How is everything going over there? I recall reading about an early panic with store shelves getting cleared, but it seemed like the government there got a handle on things fairly quickly.

One thing I really liked was that they moved to testing very quickly, and were very forthcoming and transparent with the results.

They really need to ramp up testing here B bluemax_1 too many asymptomatic vectors just traipsing about. A buddy of mine and his business partner just tested positive but had to jump through hoops to get someone to test them because "they didn't meet criteria" They're doing the right thing and staying in and away from others now.

Where are you located? Things were hard in Spokane last week, but supply lines are restocking and people are not panicking much yet and the first drive thru testing site opened today, you just need a doctors order to get the test.

Yes, I am from Singapore. Not part of China or Malaysia LOL

The key to success containment is to work as a nation. Reserve previous and limited resources for those who needs it most and practice social responsibility. We can fight this together and win this. No one needs to die from this pandemic.

Hand sanitizer and face mask should be reserved for front line guys to keep everyone safe. No supply chain in the world can keep up with the demand if everyone starts hoarding these supplies. I told myself- if I die due to COVID19, I die as as sucker for fine knives and axe. Never as a sucker for toilet rolls, mask or hand sanitizer lol

Practice social responsibility. Buy only what you need and stay at home while the front line guys stay at work. This will reduce strain on the social and medical systems. The more space you can create for the medical system, the more life we can save. Stats shows that given enough care, the survival rate is extremely high. More than 30% of the affected in Singapore have discharged from the hospital. With only over 60% remaining in the hospital with zero death currently.

We can fix this together.

Cheers!

Yesterday I went to my doctor at the clinic my wife and I use to get my shoulder checked out. I was not prepared for what I saw.

Outside the mall I thought I saw a guard, but I was wrong, he was a real-deal gun slingin' police officer--wearing a medical mask.

Between the two entry glass doors were two female assistants, head to foot in gowns and medical masks replete with clear coverings for their eyes. Oh, they were polite, but I was asked if I was sick, if I had been out of the country, was I presenting any recognized symptoms and the nature of my visit.

I was then ushered to a dispensing stand, told to coat my hands with disinfectant and wipe my hands together until they were dry.

For those boomers among us, you must remember where Sean Connery as James Bond gets caught with a bikini clad beach comber and the duo is immediately forced to an examination area for exposure to radiation. Even to the point where a machine checked under their fingernails.

Obviously my "examination" wasn't that brutal, but it did give me pause. When I got home I wondered if this procedure was the start of a Brave New World. After all, people are going to get sick after this social quarantine.

BTW, my experience happened an empty, dark building with a patient waiting room also darkened and completely empty. I guess I used to snicker about fraidy cats ranting about Big Brother and "the power of the sate" since the Madison area is rife with conspiracy theories.

What's it's like where you are?
Woah. The library is closed... no school for an extra week, and restaurants are delivery or take out only.

None of the above things seem, to me, like they would make any difference in the long run......

Will we come together after the dust settles as a more united Nation? Will be put aside and actually overcome the stupid partisan bickering, the nasty tribalism, the ugly nativism and the pathetic slide of our education system? Will we once again aspire to lead the World in producing and production instead of this phase of our youth being much more infatuated with the me-me-me proclivities for Instagram influencing, modeling, singing & dancing?

There is nothing wrong with the correct form of nationalism as long as we submit to the fact that we are indeed a nation of immigrants who or whose ancestors left other shores to seek a better life for themselves and their descendants to come. Race, color, creed and religion/belief is irrelevant as long as one believes, preaches and practices in one ideal: America.

Let's roll, ladies & gents :)

You're right. It's not about the long run it's about now, right now (in reality shoulda been a month ago) how to not overwhelm the healthcare system. Give them time to properly treat those that need it spread out over time. You can't keep an invisible entity from spreading by going about it "business as usual"

^^ this may help put it into perspective.

The powers that be dont want that. Say what you will. It's up to those who are parents to teach their children, not send them to the Indoctrination R Us school system.

We have to teach our children about personal accountability and responsibility.

We need to not teach them WHAT to think, but HOW to think. I dont really know how to explain that other than using the scientific method as an example.

I believe its doable. In the process, no one will be having more fun than us. Of that I'm sure.

^ it’s called dumbing down the populace. The less the masses are able to think critically, the more goes around for the ruling echelon and then less of the pie for the rest. I get all that.

The key is critical thinking and coming to a conclusion based on evidence and facts. Remember that facts and truth are singular and there is no alternative version of them: once a person grasps this simple notion, then can try to pass on to his own kids and/or others. I am not saying thinking against the grain is a bad thing per se because after all most of our species’ triumphs have come by crushing popular beliefs but the key factor is that beliefs are not facts based on proven evidence!

Definitely agree.

Several labs also have developed methods to test for antibodies.

The rt-PCR tests will only show positive or negative for folks with active infection with SARS-Cov2. Someone who was infected and has recovered, with no live SARS-Cov2 will test negative on an rt-PCR test.

It would be really good information to know if there have been people who were infected with SARS-Cov2 and were 100% asymptomatic (never developed symptoms).

How many of the people with no/mild symptoms never develop any/severe symptoms? Or are they simply in the early stages of becoming symptomatic/severe? The patients who've wound up with severe symptoms generally started out with milder presentations initially, before their conditions worsened (and in some cases, including the one in the link I posted a few pages ago, severe degradation in a very short time).

Being able to track recovered individuals is also important. There have been some reports from other countries of reinfection (not merely someone who tested nehative previously, testing positive later, but patients who'd been admitted, tested positive, treated for weeks, finally recovered and were released after 2 negative tests on consecutive days, then falling ill returning to the hospital and testing positive again).

If we see that the initial reports of reinfection are false, then recovered individuals could be a very important aid in dealing with this.

The more data we have, the better we can tailor the response.

My wife just returned from shopping. She got everything on her list, including prescription meds, another pack of toilet paper, a big block of paper towels, sugar, two pounds of finely ground Sumatra, generic Vicks, butter, two bottles of Tylenol, two dozen eggs, two loafs of sourdough bread, and various vegetables.

There was no fighting with other cranky housewives, not even the parking was bad. To be honest, my wife has a knack for this, she carries bundles of coupons and knows when to cash them in. All this on one of the worst, high volume rainy days. For our area, the worst is over.

I Like this guy.

No despair. No hopelessness. No fear.

I bet we'd hang out.

I found out today that the virus lives in the toilet paper.

DONT USE THE TOILET PAPER! :)

What's it's like where you are?

Effective tonight, all residents here in California have been ordered to stay at home except for the obvious exceptions related to food, meds, etc. as described below:

What can I do? What’s open?
Essential services will remain open such as:

  • Gas stations
  • Pharmacies
  • Food: Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants
  • Banks
  • Laundromats/laundry services
Essential state and local government functions will also remain open, including law enforcement and offices that provide government programs and services.

What’s closed?
  • Dine-in restaurants
  • Bars and nightclubs
  • Entertainment venues
  • Gyms and fitness studios
  • Public events and gatherings
  • Convention Centers
AND ANYONE WHO THINKS THEY ARE ABOVE IT ALL, IE, NOT WILLING TO COMPLY WITH THIS LEGAL ORDER, CAN JUST GO FUCK THEMSELVES.
