Received today: ZT 0566

Bad news U.P.S. guy dropped mine of yesterday when I was at work, girlfriend got it and wont give it to me til Christmas!!!!! What the hell??? Told her Ill just spend more money on a 0770 if I cant have it, she said go ahead Ill still have the one you want tho.....smh

Ouch, I wouldn't stand for that. You have one of the best edc knives made just sitting under a tree? Dude, you got to get that thing out now!

I just thought I would give a bit of an update, after taking it apart, cleaning and lubing it I can now flip my deassisted one much easier. Its still not the best flipper out there but its pretty darn good and with a bit of practice I can get it to flip consistently without wrist flick which is good.

Still love the knife overall, I think this is going to be one of those knives that everybody just gets and uses as a bases for comparison for future knives.

This knife will be the one you need several of, for me anyway. You know the ole "one is none two is one".

Well, first casualty today, dropped the 566 on a concrete floor, hit about half inch below the tip and marred it pretty bad, I got most of it out with the sharp maker medium stones but its still going to take some time. Hang onto it when grabbing the stainless side with the blade out, it is slick I tell ya.

Think I am going to just get a DMT aligner set now, this gives me a good excuse to get some diamond stuff. This elmax is hard.

I have a Smith's diamond kit that works well on Elmax. That being said, I plan on picking up a course, diamond rod for my SM, for re profiling and such.

Thanks, however I wanted to see what the SM would do if I spent the time with it plus I used this as a learning experience.

I spent 70 minutes starting with medium stones both corners and flats and worked my way through to the UF's then lightly stropped it on my wallet, I was surprised to see that I got the edge polished  just a hair shy of a highly reflective mirror polish. I couldn't believe it. The diamond stones would have cut the time down and I think I will go that route, as I am not one for mirror edges on my knives anyway, and don't have the time or desire to do that. Just a good sharp working edge is all I am after.

The SM is the first sharpening system I have ever bought and this is the first knife I have ever spent this much time sharpening, and I have been carrying knives for 25 yrs. I am new at this sharpening stuff as I would just carry a dull knife around and not worry about it.
I know most of you guys are really good at the sharpening stuff but I just wanted to share my 2 cents worth on this awesome knife and thanks for all the info that is on this forum regarding sharpening.

Awesome knife! Finally a more EDC size ZT. Dying to get one in my hand, would most certainly pick one up. I have to disagree on the de-assisting. Spring assist is always a welcome feature to me.

The 1554 is very good, there was a rep from New Belgium giving out samples at my local Muni. They call it a black ale but it is really a Lager (the have to call it an ale due to some weird law in Texas about beers with over a 5% ABV). For a dark beer it is very light. Sorry for the off topic post, but is it ever bad to talk about beer???

Back on topic, the 566 was tuned for assisted opening so it may not be fair to expect it to flip like the Southard or Domino that had their detente developed for manual opening. Just a thought... Like I said, mine is very smooth and opens with little or no wrist flick.

Thanks for the brew info!

Btw, have you tried Tuf-Glide, and if so what do you think of that compared to the Nano? I just got one of my 0566's and was pretty disappointed in the action. Took it apart and oiled it up with Tuf-Glide. It's better now but still not what I expected. At least not compared to my 0350.

As a side note, it's impossible for me to open with the thumb stud, which is disappointing. I was hoping to be able to use it.

One thing to remember is KAI 'tunes" the SpeedSafe on each design to open at a rate they feel comfortable with. Also realize that since SpeedSafe is a bias closed system, the harder and faster it fires open, the harder it is to close.

If they sell as many of these as I think they will, we knife nuts here are going to be a very small sample of the total picture. This knife has been (perfectly) designed for the masses.

Mine opens just as it should. Thanks ZT!

I'm not impressed at all with Tuff-glide. I deassisted my 770 and it didn't flip great so I cleaned it and lubed it with Tuff-glide. Really not much improvement. I took it apart again and used my Hornady One Shot lube and it's 100 times smoother and flipping like it should.

Just got a text from my pusher, I mean dealer, that he should have a few 566s in tomorrow or Monday. Can't wait! I don't plan to de-assist mine.

I'm sure you're right, I think I'll try to hold off for a bit before getting another one just to see if there are any changes made to the design or steel type within the next year or so.

Yeah, this is what I am going to do, I am sure they will have some other variants of this knife, as it is going to be very popular.

Since it's a sort of spiritual cousin to the 0350 (small version of very popular large knife), I can definitely see it happening some time. It's hard to imagine that it would be soon though, since it seems that they've got some backlog they're working on.

Does anybody know how long it took for the first 0350 variants to come out after its initial release? Maybe that will shed some insight.

I agree with Iceman, Tuff-Glide works just fine as a rust preventative but I don't think it's that great of a lube. Nano-Oil has worked great for me and it's all I use. Both my 566 and my 770 are very smooth now after cleaning them and applying the Nano-Oil. They both open de-assisted with no wrist flick now. It may also take some time to break in as well. I have probably flipped both of them over 100 times (I flip/flick/open my knives while driving all the time).

(I flip/flick/open my knives while driving all the time).

I thought I was the only one who did this.

I will say my 566 flips smooth as ever, I only took the torsion bar out and didn't take it apart and clean it, just load up the button and bang, no wrist.

Thanks Iceman & Eschwebach for the feedback! I'll give it go with the oil. I'm still using mine with the torsion bar and am working it while sitting on my ass.

I may have to give the Nano-Oil a try. I've been using Finish Line flourinated grease, which has given great results so far.
