Received today: ZT 0566

Throwing my two cents in for anyone else wondering...
A- it's not a very good manual flipper when de-assisted. It can be done but...The small detent isn't nearly firm enough. I tried messing with pivot adjustment but no go on mine anyway. It falls out of the handle when you barely move the handle up and down. Flicks open without wrist movement 1 in 5 times on MY specific knife. Took it apart nothing obviously wrong with pivot ball. Just meant to be an assisted knife I believe.

B-a little grease where the torsion bars ride will get rid of the rattle some ppl here.

C- this knife is awesome. I'm not an assisted opener fan (knockout is my only other one) but this knife makes it all worth it. Get one!

This may be the case with your knife but it's not for everyone's. Mine is an awesome manual flipper and has plenty of detent. Mine is very smooth and I know a few others have chimmed in that their's are also.

Finally got my 566 today, after all the hype and waiting to get it I must say that it had some lofty expectations to live up to. And it has totally exceeded them all. Great knife I'm so impressed. Nice job kai

Yeah, its an awesome knife, wait till you de-assist it, you will like it even more.

I received my ZT0566 few days ago.

Out of the box it was extremely difficult to open as assisted knife.
I had no intent to use the knife as assisted and I proceeded to de-assist, clean and lube (used Kroil)
hoping that it will be smooth as that of Iceman’s but no such luck.
Detent on my knife may be just too strong (maybe a good thing?) and I may had trouble overcoming the force to manually open the knife.
I’ve kept on using the knife for the past few days and it has become significantly smooth now.
It will still not manually open like that of Iceman’s but it will now open with just a slight flick of wrist and I’ve also found a sweet spot on
thumb stud to open every time.
I never learned a proper technique of manual flipper (I have Skyline and Zing) so being able to open with a slight wrist flick is fine with me.
I’ve noticed that the pocket clip was applying quite a bit of pressure on the lock bar which also may be an attribute for difficulty in opening for some 0566.....

It’s an awesome manual flipper !!

I agree with your findings Sunby ..........I bought two of these , the first was as you stated above , I didnt like it much.
But the second one was totally different , opened with ease and all is good.
The first one is gettin easier , the more I play with it the easier its gettin.
I really like the style of the knife ..........Iam hoping for a Titanium version.

You had difficutly to open as "assisted" on one of the two?
I could not open as "assisted" unless extreme force was applied.
How is it opening now as "assisted"?
I never had a chance to break-in as assisted since I de-assisted immediately.

Yes opening assisted was hard .........hurt the finger.
Its gettin easier as time goes by , but I found that using the thumb stud and flipper at the same time made it alot easier to break in.
Again , the second knife was perfect ......... I think the detent was just stronger or ??
Either way its gettin easier , it just takes time.
Use the stud and flipper at the same time.

Yup, I've ripped skin of my index finger and thumb trying to open as "assisted".
It's much smooth now as de-assisted with some break-in time.

How does the handle thickness and "blockiness" compare to the 0550/0551? It looks like the 0566 might be thinner from the comparison picture to the PM2. I always thought the square edges and thickness of the 0550/0551 handle made it feel a lot larger/heavier than it needed to be in the pocket/hand and less ergonomic in long term use than say the 0560 series with it's more rounded handle slab profile.

Teach me not to go through all 18 pages! Seems significantly thinner, but still less rounded edges, though with the thinner handle that's probably less of an issue than on the much thicker 0550

The 0566 is much thinner than the 0550 and 0560. It carries very comfortably in pocket. Here are some side by sides.

The 0566 is about the same thickness as a Sage2.

Could someone tell me if it has the same jimping on the handle by the pinky as the 0550?

Thank ya and enjoy!

yes it does, and I hate it. think cheese grater on your index finger each time you flip the knife.

i got one of the ones that is sticky/hard to flip. I took the torsion bar out, and even with the pivot tightened all the way down, there is still too much blade rock.

I played with this knife for about a 1/2 hour at the blade show last summer, and was really impressed. i'm going to keep working with it, but the production model has been a disappointment, at least mine.

Got mine today from kershawguy. Sweet blade, just a great size and it works perfect. We'll done ZT and Hinderer.

My 566 has a very strong detent. I've had it for almost a week now, and the first day it would not budge using the thumb studs (assisted), but with the blade protrusion/flipper it fired really well. I desisted it for a few days and then put the torsion bar back in to give it a fair chance. The lock up is very strong and the frame lock even today is still very stiff to disengage. I've been cycling it open and closed often and its smoothed out a great deal, but the frame lock is still way stronger than my brand new (just arrived today) 550. I'm wondering if its an attribute of the stainless frame lock over that of a titanium??? Either way, this is a great knife in the perfect size and form factor for EDC use.
