Rick Hinderer sent Cease and Desist to Youtuber for saying the steel was soft in his knife?

And the proof he's not using a calibrated machine is where? What are these "agreed industry standards" you're looking for?

A calibrated machine is a calibrated machine. I work with calibrated machines daily. So as long as it's calibrated, it gives accurate results. Doesn't matter if it's in a garage or a machine shop, those results are just as valid either way.
And the proof that he's using a calibrated machine is where?

Dude just posted he doesn't care about his hardness readings and that the blade could very well be in spec. So what the heck is the issue over anyway? His opinions? I don't get it. TK blabbing about his actual hardness readings on a Hinderer product in my opinion is really the only thing that could get him in trouble and that was exactly the focus of the letter. Am I missing something? Or was the guy really publicly insinuating the blade was out of spec and now he's walking it back pretending like all he did was talk about his opinions on Hinderer's utilization of M390 & 20cv? This whole thing is odd. And did you guys read that letter? TK has to apologize and say he regrets all of his statements? What a circus!

Didn't say it isn't calibrated, didn't say it is. It's his machine, not mine. Burden of calibration proof would be on him, same as for any company being challenged on calibration (but they keep records...).
As for industry standards, you are now just being obtuse deliberately for arguments' sake. You know exactly what I'm talking about.
He provided calibration receipts when he showed the test results. And no, I have no idea what you're talking about.

For anyone who cares, I was wondering who this M merkon guy was who keeps "defending" TK. Turns out he's a long time fan of the TK's podcast and just another shill.

Yep, you caught me. I'm a paid shill.

I like the guys work. He's not on that podcast anymore, but I like the podcast too. Not sure what that proves? I'm also the head moderator of /r/knife_swap. I like knives, what can I say. Caught me there.

I like that somehow me supporting TK means I must be a shill and have no credibility, and you guys supporting RHK therefore are somehow superior and know more? Makes zero sense, but okay.

Wait, you find the fact that he's working out of his garage to make his claim more credible rather than less credible?

That's quite a take.

No, I'm just saying that him being in his garage doesn't change his credibility. Try reading what I write next time.

Again, look at his video. He shows calibration receipts.

Maybe, just maybe, with all of this back and forth in this ONE particular forum, we can appreciate how much fuss just might affect a business, or a YouTube channel, or whatever, over many forums, pages, and social media groups, and how one might be upset over what gets said over them. Just sayin. Thanks internet!

Oooohhhh....so just put together some receipts, and boom: credibility to be able to call out a guy who's made a living selling tens of thousands of knives to satisfied customers is immediately established.

Dag, I need to get my printer out so I can call out Spyderco!

Heeeyyyy whoa, settle down. The man has receipts.

I read precisely what you wrote and you cited him working out of his parents garage as a positive thing in regards to his knowledge and ability to calibrate the test. Perhaps you should learn to review what you've written, it's a helpful skill.

All else being equal, higher hrc will cut longer. That's a fact.
Arguably. It’s always geometry before HRC. That’s the fact.
All being equal, including HRC, when you go to the 61- 63 and higher HRC numbers, angle more acute than the optimal for particular steel and thickness behind the edge, will not cut longer for number of reasons.
In this example, even being so acute as the higher HRC, lower HRC sample will retain working sharpness longer.

I will give you one piece of advice here, you're very clearly here on behalf of someone you know and are working to try to defend him. Being needlessly antagonistic to the people in this thread when you have a strong connection to the person in question is very likely not doing them the favor you may think it is.

I mean... that's literally proof of calibration. I don't know how far you want to move the goalposts, but since you asked how we know it's calibrated, there's your proof.

I'm not here on his behalf. No one asked me to come here. I don't have a strong connection to the guy. I like his work. Just like how you guys are doing your utmost to defend RHK with everything you can.

But hey, clearly I'm a shill with no experience with anything I'm talking about. Your arguments of "I don't believe you" and "receipts are on paper so they prove nothing" are very effective and clear. I'm glad to have spent time with such an intelligent group of people here. I'm sure daddy ricky appreciates your services.

I believe that you are a reddit mod. Passive aggression, sarcasm and completely missing the point are all dead giveaways. Aren't there some community college courses for you to study for, or something? Go swing your big d*ck around on Reddit, kid. 😆

Just saw a guy on YouTube (freind and supporter of TK) and he claims the 58.6 Rc reading was an average of 4 hits on the flats near the spine.
At least he knows enough to do the average of a series of hits.
Anyway, I would rather check it in the pivot area as that should be the most parallel surface, so it sounds as if the knife was assembled during the test. Also, if he has the blade of the knife pinned on the anvil under the indenter and the handle just hanging there, that can be cause for an inaccurate reading.
But it doesn't really matter because now I know TK doesn't even care about the hardness readings!!!!

So despite all your talk all you have is some random ad hominem, weak denials of something that's very obvious to literally anyone paying attention, a poor ability to understand the claims you've made in the past and the ability to throw a tantrum on the internet. Very impressive.

This seems pretty cut and dry to me.

TK (a professional) claimed that another maker's (also a professional) product was subpar by their own opinion.

The maker who is subject to the claims has decided to defend his product aggressively with a C&D.

This is how business is in the real world.

"Paramount to accurate and reliable Rockwell hardness results is ensuring that the operators and the methods used are following proper test technique and practice.
Failure to properly prepare and execute a Rockwell hardness test can result in compromised test data or false readings,"

"Daily indirect performance verification of the testing instrument is also important; the scales being used should be verified using standardized test blocks or coupons.
Five total readings should be made in the verification process; the measured values must fall within the tolerance stated on block and the block certificate."

"ASTM recommends annual maintenance and verification of a Rockwell tester and more frequent verification under heavy use or extreme conditions. Verification should be performed by an accredited verifying agency and the report should follow and reference ASTM E18 Rockwell test method."
Let's not get all bogged down with facts.

A calibration certificate is the only proof of calibration.
