Rick Hinderer XM-18..Looking for a Review

water seeks its level-if rick doesnt answer emails he has his own reasons, some will continue too try others will move on-there is a similar knife from a german maker that i recently discovered here at bf also-

my xm-18 has a very nice blade finish, the g10 is very grippy -its my first half/half-
slotted screw is a geat idea imho-

great fit&finish

in hand ergo's are perfect for opening and holding-

i just am not a fan of its tip up clip arrangement-

Cant you just switch the pocket clip to tip down? There are additional holes for this option on your XM.

By the pictures it looks like you can have it tip up or down.

Doh, looks like jryan76 beat me to it.

yes you can go tip up or down-the knife sits too far into the pocket because it rides so high-makes getting your hand in and out a pain-

i want a tip up that rides low enought that its out of the way

Hey Guys! Thanks again for all your discussion on the XM-18!...I'll try to clear up a couple of misconceptions..first, Steven,I'm not actually a "newbie" in knifemaking..I've been making knives since 1987, almost 20 years;) But, most of that time I spent making art type knives, only in the last 5 years making using and tactical knives...the last time you made a observation on the blade/handle ratio thing it was about the Mayo TNT haha...
I have made framelocks with overlays on both sides, its no big deal, alot of makers have made them.

the XM-18 IS a half and half framelock, meaning that it is Ti on the lockside and g-10 on the other..BUT, my g-10 side has a Ti half liner built in so as to provide hard points to critical areas..

As for the pivot screws..haha...I have made ALOT of pivots with torx screws..in fact I also make MY OWN torx headed screws!..but, I went with the sloted on the XM-18 for just the reason stated..so if you need a adjustment in the fied it can be done with just about anything you have on hand.

Thanks again so much guys!

Oilman, Thanks and I promise I'll get you emailed back and I did make a note of the change!

And I do promise to get to everyones email!

Rick

Thanks Rick. And don't sweat over the Steven stuff, he's really been on a roll lately and making lots of friends.

Just FYI, Rick I resent email to you to confirm that I sent paypal to you for the passaround X-18.

Thanks OilMan, Yea, I figured that from the last time:D

DaveH, Yes, I just seen it!..and now that I finally got power back on in the shop and cleaned up from the storms I am forging ahead with the XM-18!..I cant wait to get it to you!

Rick

If you don't like a makers work, that's cool, but you don't need to continue to post about it, that jsut seems rude. Or maybe you just don't like him because he posts on another forum?

1. I don't dislike Rick at all, have only met him once, briefly.
2. Have made a couple of posts about my feelings on the work, hardly think that I am hounding him.
3. Could care less where he posts, how many times, or how many groupies he has, but I do get pissed when something is paid for, and shipment delayed so the maker can have a "Forum Party" or something similar. Have no problem with delays before the fact, but when I or anyone else pays for something, it should be in the mail within days....not weeks.
Exceptions are birthings, and funerals, everything else is just piss poor excuses.

This has nothing to do with my observations about th XM-18, and everything to do with personalities. I have tried to keep the two seperate.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Are you saying you paid for one of his knives and did not receive it? If that is the case then I can understand your hostility. My experience with Rick was about as good as it gets though. It was the fastest turn around time I've had with any maker.

No, a modular kubaton was delayed for about a month after I paid for it. I don't have any hostility, really.

What bothers me is the design of the XM-18, and this has nothing to do with my kubaton experiences with Rick. I made my review/critique points, Rick responded, and that was that, as far as I am concerned. I have posted to exactly 3 threads concerning Rick. I was fully supportive in one of them, said that I did not like the blade to handle ratio and blade finish in comparison to a TNT on another, and this one.

I don't think that this makes me a hater, I don't care for the look and function of folding Strider knives, and I dont care for the looks or function of the XM-18. That is all, I have no ulterior motive, or agenda.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I understand, I don't claim to love every knife design that comes around either. I can tell that in use and design, I find the XM-18 one of my favorite knives.

Even though it may be similar to a Strider in that it has a ti side and a G10 side, that's where the similarities end. I own, and have owned every folder that Strider makes (Except for a custom) and like them a lot. But they do not have the ergos that the XM does.

It makes sense, if you think about it: Titanium on the lock side for frame-lock strength (as opposed to a liner lock), and textured G-10 on the side where your fingers go for better retention and comfort (titanium gets c-c-cold!).

Don't forget that the G-10 side has a nested liner, too, which is an improvement over the Strider folders IMHO.

That's just my anal-retentive gene coming out! I like my knives to look the same as much as possible on both sides, barring clips and framelocks. Just one of my many, many quirks.;)

A bit delaying time is normal when buying a custom knife. I´m not the Very Old Custom Knife Collector, but it must be about 5-6 custom knives I ordered directly from the maker, both U.S. and Europe, and I always had to wait a good time longer than estimated delivery time. It´s custom, not company. So there can´t be a comparison between Rick´s work and Strider or CRK. Fit and finish of Rick´s work are way better than of my SnG, btw.

G-10 and titanium: I´m not that big framlock connaisseur, but the combination of G-10, halfliner and framelock is really cool.
Saying torx-screws are better then slotted screws is a bit childish. I get the feeling somebody is a bit malcontent and looking for failings here.

My XM-18 rides in my pocket since I got it and I didn´t touch the other knives in my closet. Super cool knife, woud buy it again without thinking about. I often thougt about getting a Sebenza, but I always decided: If I can get a custom handmade instead - go for it !

Rick sent me an email last night about my order so hopefully he'll respond to your inquiry too. It sounds like he had a lot on his plate lately so don't take it personally. (But ya, waiting sucks)
