Rockstead Knowledge Thread

This thread is half Rockstead knowledge and half "drool over pics of gorgeous polished knife art." Fine with me.

A light user won't have issues with ZDP rusting unless they live in an extremely damp climate or are averse to simple maintenance. I hand polished both my ZDP Spydercos and polished ZDP resists staining better than satin. Then there's Tuff-Glide.

ZDP-189 can pit, but I have read it also may depend on the temper (how susceptible it is to corrosion). Not sure if this is true or not.
I have no first-hand experience with the Rockstead ZDP-189, but I do have a few Spydercos with it that I use often and enjoy quite a bit.
Recently, I have purposely used and abused an old Stretch CF/ZDP-189 just to see how much it would take before corroding (after seeing many people posting up being worried about it). Everything from tomatos & fruit, to stirring lots of coffee and soaking in various types of vinegar - all without cleaning off and leaving overnight... I didn't get much more than a slight darkening. I do have a Delica ZDP-189 that I purchased used that has a few tiny pits, but not sure what previous owner did to produce them. Also, I suspect the temper may have been different between the batches used for my older Stretch and the newer Delica.
The patina now on my Stretch also seems to be further protecting it from any further staining since it shakes everything off that I throw at it.

Overall, in my experience, if you care for the blade like any responsible knife user should, even with a little bit of delayed care, you shouldn't see serious problems.

Search on here for a Spyderco Stretch ZDP-189 (in blue) review, and you'll see that users fairly unbiased experience. His stainless liners rusted after swimming in the ocean, before the ZDP-189 saw much corrosion or serious staining.

VG10 clad ZDP-189 sounds like a dream! :)

VG10 clad ZDP-189 is the Rockstead SHUN

Sorry if the amount of knowledge presented in this thread isn't up to your standard. Maybe start your own Rockstead thread that includes what you feel should be included in this one:)

I didn't take bill1170's comment as a complaint. I think he's just fine with the content. But then again, being socially challenged as I am, it's possible I misunderstood. Mike. (And I have some new Shin pictures to take :D)

I'll let him speak for himself, but I don't think he was mocking the thread. I've been mostly drooling over all the eye candy as well...

No criticism was intended, sorry it came across that way. I'm enjoying both aspects of this thread.

I have been on the fence about buying a Rockstead. After reading this thread, I think I have to pull the trigger and get myself a Christmas present!!

Ah crap you guys reeled me in. Just recently became curious about Rockstead but now I am feeling a strong compulsion to sell stuff. Subscribed. 😃

Sorry Bill, for coming across brash. I read into your comment too much:o

Anyways, I'm glad this thread has reached 12 pages and has been very positive thus far.

Just ordered Chi in Yxr-7. Looking forward to hold it in my hands and post some pictures for u guys!

I never feel reason to be defensive over an expensive knife purchase. The knives speak for themselves. If people want to criticize them or their price I don't mind. A couple of Rocksteads are near the top of my list but they are extremely expensive so it will be a while before I'm ready to allocate $700+ on one knife for my collection. I collect slowly but I've never spent over $350 yet. Probably because mine become marred and worn a bit and I've never traded or sold any of my collection so far. I really don't like liquidating anything in the knife collection so I try not to collect unwisely. I don't want the small fixed Chou right now. For my first I'm definitely going 3.5" folder in YXR7, Higo it is! I haven't handled a Rockstead in person unfortunately but I'm confident I'll like it. I don't think it's a miracle knife I just know it's the knife I want right now.

You're gonna love it Brother! That tanto grind is mesmerizing:D

I have never owned or held a knife with tanto grind so I'am looking forward to try it out. Seeing the documentary makes me appreciate the hard work and excellent craftmanship of the japanese sword and knifmakers. I can say the same about their watches. For me, the price is justified.
