Rockstead Knowledge Thread

Nope, you've got it right. My Higo and CRK's sport 4x10mm tritium vials. The Rocky has a much tighter fit than the CRK's, and the vial sticks out a little bit on the sides.

I just measured and it looks like the lanyard hole on a small Sebenza is exactly 4mm in diameter. Looks like maybe the Higo and Hizen have the same size lanyard hole then? If that's the case, then the lanyard pin from a small Sebenza should fit both. The sticking out on both sides is definitely a function of the thinner liners on the Higo-X compared to the handles on the Duralumin versions.

My guess is that the pivot screw is hidden under the Stingray insert and that you have to send it back to Rockstead so they can remove it and adjust it. But I must imagine they have it loctited down pretty hard to hopefully prevent that circumstance.
From the pictures BluesBender posted of his disassembled Chi, it seems like the pivot screws don't even go through the front scale. My guess is that to adjust the blade you have to take that scale off first. (I think there are some pictures on the 4th page of the thread)

I also want to note that the Shinogizukuri blade on my Hizen still has the 24-30 degree variation in secondary bevel angle. You can clearly feel it in cutting performance at the tip v. at the choil. The reason that the width of the bevel is the same at all points is because the thickness behind the edge increases gradually as you get closer to the tip of the blade to match the angle.

Interesting! When measuring the thickness at the edge of my Chi, it appears to be all the same.

*I like both but the Higo gets my first vote. Only 2 points of contact for disassembly compared to 5 and a d shaped stop pin that can rotate at times.
The Higo IMO is trouble free and wouldn't hesitate to break it down in the field if it called for that. Lighter too. Can wear business attire or casual.

Ugg... anybody know where there are duraluminum higo's in stock? (zdp or yxr7) Yes, you guys have worn me down. Haven't seen any Shu's in owner's hands here, that one calls my name too...

Actually I'm going to retract that statement. I just measured it with calipers (very carefully) and it seems like it's a consistent 1mm at both the tip and choil. I still feel some difference in geometry, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. Might be the primary bevel that's different? Or maybe just my imagination.

It's here! This thing is stunning. The DLC gives the blade an amazing color. Here's it next to my Reg Large Sebenza.

The blade is beyond hair popping sharp. The smoothness of deployment is even more hydraulic then the Sebenza. I'll definitely need a lanyard, leather pouch isn't really my style.

I've owned a few customs and the fit and finish of the Higo beats everything I've owned.

Yep, that's how I measured mine (with calipers). I think it might be the amount of belly at the tip that makes it feel sharper. The Higo's/Hizens don't really have a "tip" IMO, just a lot of belly.

Oh man! That's a winner right there:thumbup: Try out the belt sheath, I don't think it's that bad. As a plus, you'll gain more pocket space.

Enjoy that one Brother!

Great Ironwood scales on that one! Congrats on the acquisition! Enjoy and please provide updates/more pics :)

So, I had to try it...cutting a book in half (or nearly so). Silly, yes...but fun :) I had a damaged copy of a book that was un-useable, so why not test Rockstead's sharpness first-hand? I was very impressed. The Higo in ZDP-189 went through very easily and the cut was extremely clean. I tried this with a few other knives I own that are also extremely sharp (with convex edges) and the cuts were more effort, less deep, and less clean overall. Obviously the geometry of said knives in not Rockstead's, but these were all high quality steels, with .13 stock or less, & sharpened expertly (by a friend of mine who owns a knife shop and knife-sharping business) - so I think that says something.

:DImpressive eh?:D

Here's a cut I just made with my self-resharpened Higo:

Congrats! That's a sweet knife.

Wait a second...are we in the middle of a "let's cut sh*t up" throw-down?!?! I'm ready brother, just got my local antiquated phone book this week :D Oh, and that math notebook totally deserved it.

Hah!:D I wish I had a phone book to cut up; I haven't seen one in ages!

Off Topic: I remember an old trick we'd use in High School to rip phone books in half bare-handed. It would impress all the gals:D;)

I'm pretty sure Rockstead would repair any of their knives if damaged but would quote you first then charge you. Kind of like going to your local auto mechanic.

I asked Rockstead this same question...
"If I am not the original purchaser of a Rockstead knife (and therefore not the warranty holder) what would be the cost of a regrind and sharpening performed by your company if needed (for example for a Higo or Tei)"

And they responded via email..
"Thank you for your inquiry.

It cost is around 80 ~ 100 USD. It include the shipping fee.
You can pay it by paypal. If you are dicided to send us, please let me know.
