Rockstead Knowledge Thread

I'm still interested in seeing Matildas Chou after he let his rock carving friend use it. That I want to see pics of. Sounds like he brought his edge back to a, "like factory" sharpness.

Wow. That was a real apology.

Well, then I apologize. This statement definetly came across as tongue-in-cheek though:

carry on making the community better every day.

I'm not trying to better the community, just sharing my experience:D

This thread has been great, and I look forward to people's input on Rockstead. Enjoy that Shun, and happy 38th B-day btw:)

Happy birthday stician. I hope that ur shun will get some usage and not just flicking and watching at it, would be such a shame. Like owning a supercar and never drive it faster then 60 mph ä.

Thanks man. I was trying to turn us around. We are Rockstead owners. Or should I say Unicorns? LOL

We definately can. I might make a video tonight that explains the theory behind my sharpening method so people can truly understand what's going on.

Right now, I need to head to the dentist:eek:

Yeah that's me. I like to really understand why and how things work. An explanatory video would make a great addition to what you've made already. Opt for the cotton candy polishing paste at your Dentist. Not that shitty mint.

Here's my video about Rocksteads geometry, finish, and some quick talk about stropping/sharpening compounds.

(Ps. watch on YouTube to switch to HD quality)

*Edit: towards the beginning I say "hollow ground edge" a couple times. I meant to say convex ground edge the first time, and the second time, I meant to say hollow ground bevel.

What a wealth of information. I have succumb to the thread and have ordered a Higo IW YXR7-DLC. Let the waiting begin!

Don't know if this is news to anyone, but the clips and lanyard pins from a small Sebenza 21 fit on a Hizen. The clip is too straight, so it's not very useful, but you can swap out filler tabs if you want. The shoulder on the lanyard pin is a little small, but you hardly notice it with the lanyard in place. Personally I find the lanyard pin a more elegant solution for lanyard attachment than just threading it through the hole. Based on BluesBender's experience with the tritium vials, my guess is that this holds for the Large 21 and the Higo as well. I'm curious if this was an intentional choice.

A big thank you to Blues Bender for the video you made. I kinda wish I knew how to post pictures of the Chou after sharpening. The DLC çoating was ground off the bevel (to the top of the choil) to give the desired 12 degrees per side. The polished edge is aprox. 95 thou. at the heel and about 65 thousands at the tip. I then very lightly convex the edge to increase the apex diameter to the desired dullness for reliability. The original edge was poorly ground in comparison.

Well, the Higo JHs arrived today (a bit of a hassle with UPS, but got through it) - I got both steels (just for kicks). First impressions are strong - action is very smooth and the handles are comfortable yet thin enough to ride easy in the pocket. Detent is solid, lock-up is very secure, and the blade is not only beautifully polished, but VERY sharp (as advertised  ). One thing I wasn't expecting is how sharp the tip is, it's almost like a sheepfoot in its ability to score - very impressive. Overall, it's obvious the knife is well made. We'll see how things go as I put them to use (admittedly on the lighter side); for now - here are some pics:

Yep, that's the stuff!!! I was waiting to see your post pop up today:D

Which polish are you more drawn to? DLC or raw? Personally, I think the DLC is something special.

That's a tough one - I genuinely really like them both. The lighting in my place was horrible today (really bad weather here in Seattle...), so the DLC didn't come out in the photos too well, but in person, it's really beautiful - that charcoal/smokey color is indeed very special.

David, I knew it was only a matter of time before you posted a couple. Congrats on the beauties.
I just remembered I am not supposed to be reading this thread  They sure are fun to look at though. :D

Mind PMing where you got them from? I'm looking for a Higo DLC and am hoping to buy within the US.
