Rockstead Knowledge Thread

Yes, the edge of the YXR7 blades are "raw". I put most of the bevel (polished surface) on the sandpaper when sharpening on a soft medium. It's almost impossible to place the entire bevel on the cushioned surface. The only time I tip the blade up is when using a ceramic stone, reason being, is the stone doesn't promote a convex shape like the foam backer behind the sandpaper does.

The ceramic stone allows me to realign the apex only, whereas the sandpaper allows me to keep the entire convex shape intact. If you didn't see the video I made about Rocky's geometry, try suffering through it if you can:D I explain the different ideas behind the sandpaper and a stone.

The whole idea of tipping the blade up to hit the apex (raw edge) is to be tangent to Rockstead's rounded zero-ground edge. this can be used for both Honzukuri and Shinogizukuri.

I hope this makes sense. If not, don't be afraid to ask any questions:)

You have really helped me to understand this process so much better. Thank you BB.

Thanks man, it did make sense, as did the video (had watched several times already). Just wanted to make sure I understood, since I have something shincoming. :D

You're welcome:) I'm glad to be able to help any way I can!

I majored in mathematics in college, so geometry is something I understand pretty well. There is no formula for sharpening a knife, but geometry is the major role of understanding how to sharpen a Rockstead.

I can't wait to hear your first impressions of the Shin! I'm sure you will be happy with it, but you'll have to let us know:)

I certainly will! I was looking throughout this thread and realized not much input on the Shin, so I thought I'd give one a go. I very well may pick up a Higo-X-IW too (reviewing pictures of a couple right now).

To much talk and to little photos

Well, the Higo JHs arrived today (a bit of a hassle with UPS, but got through it) - I got both steels (just for kicks). First impressions are strong - action is very smooth and the handles are comfortable yet thin enough to ride easy in the pocket. Detent is solid, lock-up is very secure, and the blade is not only beautifully polished, but VERY sharp (as advertised [emoji106] ). One thing I wasn't expecting is how sharp the tip is, it's almost like a sheepfoot in its ability to score - very impressive. Overall, it's obvious the knife is well made. We'll see how things go as I put them to use (admittedly on the lighter side); for now - here are some pics:

YOU GOT TWO? So pimp... Lol.

Man you guys are so bad for my wallet lol. I need your help please. I've been debating on getting a Rockstead because of the cost but I have the chance to get a Hizen with YXR7 steel for $450. It has been carried and used some and resharpened once. Is this a good deal? I'm not familiar with resale prices. Thanks in advance for the help!

I would jump on that, if it's in decent condition. You can't lose. If you don't like it, you could flip (sorry had to) it for at LEAST what you paid for it.

Congratulations Officer's Match! Now we get to read about your experiences.

Was able to trade into this one, no chance to do anything but fondle it. The action is just plain ridiculous - I have and have had some pretty dang nice knives to compare with. This thing is amazing, so far beyond the best of my CRK's and Hinderer's that I am shocked (again still talking pivot action). I was curious (verging on concerned) about the Duralumin handles; not at all now, due to the amazing shape of the Shin's handle. The contours are perfect, it practically caresses my hand. I am blown away already and I have yet to use the blade!

make sure you guys wipe off your YXR7 blades after using them wet,
I guess I didn't soon enough after I cut some fruit
