Rockstead Knowledge Thread

commenters with the immediate disposition that rockstead wouldn't do that ...must be a fake ect....

The whole thing IS your fault after all Blues Bender, you had to go showing off those pretty blades until I bought one! haha

I was going to "retry" with a Shin, but im concerned with the rayskin, I dont know if Id like it....
I understand Rockstead trying introduce Japanese history into the knives by using rayskin but wonder about the long term longevity of animal hide glued into the handle....

Oh yea, I also forgot about that one guy that kept speaking for you and calling KC scammers:D:p

I think you should give them another try. Regarding cast lines and such, I'm still in disbelief, but who knows! Maybe ZDP is made using the lost wax method:D

To be honest, the ray skin feels and looks like plastic. I still like the look of it on my Chi though, it adds a nice traditional element to a modern Japanese folder.

To be fair, I heard of a few problems that were happening with the new Shun. Maybe the two new Rocky models have some issues that need to be worked out? All I can attest to, is that my two examples are near perfection:) Every manufacturer has problems now and then. I had an ongoing problem with a CRK a while ago, and it was a factory error that they fixed for me. Problems happen, solutions are what is more important.

If you have time ....what type of issues with the Shun?

..........lost wax method.....to funny.

It's something I heard from someone that heard from another someone, etc... I honestly don't quite remember all the details, so I won't make any claims.

Regarding the Ryo, did the spine not look like this?

Yes, the spine looked like that. to bad we cant adjust the contrast on that pic so It would show all of the drilled and threaded holes inside the handle....that was strange to say the least but probably used for machining the handle in a jig...

There were threaded holes with no screws in them basically? That's odd.

For comparison, my Higo and Chi interiors look nice and clean.

That Higo pivot is pretty "reeve" like...and the Chi reminds me of the Shirogorov's inner workings for sure. Very nice.

I know right? That thread was crazy with self proclaimed experts of rockstead; those of who have probably never even held one. made me feel like this guy .....:D

Listen. You often take your experience modifying a single knife as the basis for knowing things. Unfortunately you are often wrong and dont like being told so. But if you are going to tell people it was a cast blade im going to tell you that you are wrong. You should be happy as I didnt call you out by name. I appreciate you showing up though so people can put a name to the misinformation.

Well Purp, it looked cast or stamped. "Obviously" I could be wrong and more than likely was CNC'd and and that part of the blade was left with a ridge on it. probably not acceptable to some who spend that kinda money on a knife, nor would the 6-8 drilled and tapped holes inside the handle without screws ....I was simply describing what it looked like.

...."You should be happy as I didnt call you out by name." ..............PLEASE! give it break!

Have any leg hair left? 'Member what I told you in my thread when yours shut down.... :)

And btw, ray skin is very, very good stuff. Extremely tough and durable. I have wallets, knives and all kinds of personal items utilizing it. Great handle wrap or covering.

Best of.....

The button design of the Ryo also caused a dragging feel when opened ...Im trying to get a pic up here soon..

So let's not stir up this good thread:thumbup:

Anyone wanna talk about Rocky's? As of lately, my Chi is still a personal favorite. There is so much to love about that beautiful Shinogizukuri Tanto grind:) I really wish there were more Tanto'd knives with grinds like this! There is enough belly to slice cleanly and a pointy enough tip for fine work, not to mention the facet-like beauty of the grind.

The shape reminds me of a stealth jet. Futuristic and sexy all at the same time.

I'm still trying to convince myself to like the Shin because I like what Rockstead does so much, except most of their folder designs don't appeal to me because of their size (Kou, Shu, Chi, Sai, Hizen) or are prohibitively expensive (Ryo, Tei, Shun). That pretty much leaves only the Shin for me to check out. Nevertheless, I don't really like the pommel-like flare at the end of the handle. But I like my Higo so much that I want another Rockstead. It's a weird predicament to be in.
