The Kou, like its big brother the Shin, appears to be Honzukuri to me. Couldn't find a picture on Google of it with a Shinogizukuri grind.

This is the picture I saw. Not sure if it's the lighting or the dlc but it looks like a bevel to me.

I would imagine cutting performance is slightly better with the Honzukuri grind because it doesn't have an abrupt transition like the secondary bevel of the Shinogizukuri. Contrary to the norm, I've always found sharpening full convex knives to be much more simple and forgiving than those with traditional bevels. Way less precision is needed with matching angles.

Decisions decisions... Any kou and shin owners up in here? Or just kou? Would love some feedback on if it's as smooth as the shin/Chou. I need help!!! The great info in this thread has me wanting the yxr7(spelling?) over the zdp. I'd love to have it in a shin. All I can find is a zdp shin or a yxr kou.![]()

I would assume the action on every Rockstead is more or less identical, they all use bushing pivots and phosphor bronze washers. I would also recommend the YXR7 over the ZDP for general use. Rockstead production is very low so it might be a lot of waiting until you can find the one you want. You can also contact Rockstead themselves and see when they'll be running the model you want.

If you really want it bad enough you can pre-order one like I did thru a Rockstead retailer. He was able to tell me when the next production run for that knife was, he then contacted them to ensure mine would be included during that run. The Kou is discontinued however and the shin is only available in zdp I believe.
I think I saw that on their site too. There is 1 kou for sale and I've found a couple shin. I just saw the kou thumb studs. No dice. Thought it was the same as the shin. They are more higo. I prefer the shins more. I guess shin it is!

Sweet!!!!
Does this thread have any info with different stropping setups? Besides benders sharpening input? Would a standard strop work or would I have to make the denim strop? Also, does anyone use diamonds or CNB? What micron would be suitable? Would 5 microns be too coarse? .0025 be too fine?
Sunny
When people talk about stropping or sharpening a knife that's convex they use a padded surface for give. Rockstead suggests jeans pulled over a piece of wood. A hard surface. So which is it?

Just got the ol' rockstead shin today 😀 It's such a beautiful knife. I wonder how you all felt the first time you got a scratch on it. One thing I heard often while researching was how it was a production knife. I promise you that if you got production knife like this you would doo doo your pants amigo. I'll try to get some pics up later tapa talk is downs. Going to give it a carry today, but I doubt I'll use it!
