Rockstead Knowledge Thread

The Kou, like its big brother the Shin, appears to be Honzukuri to me. Couldn't find a picture on Google of it with a Shinogizukuri grind.

This is the picture I saw. Not sure if it's the lighting or the dlc but it looks like a bevel to me.

I would imagine cutting performance is slightly better with the Honzukuri grind because it doesn't have an abrupt transition like the secondary bevel of the Shinogizukuri. Contrary to the norm, I've always found sharpening full convex knives to be much more simple and forgiving than those with traditional bevels. Way less precision is needed with matching angles.

From the way people here talk I don't see that I'll only own 1 rockstead! The action on the shin and Chou look amazing. Haven't heard much about the kou but it seems like a good back up knife size. Also for carving wood and stuff I like the shorter blade. The action is really my only reason of wanting a shin.

Weird, that one does look like its Shinogizukuri. I haven't seen any others that are but maybe they did make them in it at one point.

Decisions decisions... Any kou and shin owners up in here? Or just kou? Would love some feedback on if it's as smooth as the shin/Chou. I need help!!! The great info in this thread has me wanting the yxr7(spelling?) over the zdp. I'd love to have it in a shin. All I can find is a zdp shin or a yxr kou. :(

I would assume the action on every Rockstead is more or less identical, they all use bushing pivots and phosphor bronze washers. I would also recommend the YXR7 over the ZDP for general use. Rockstead production is very low so it might be a lot of waiting until you can find the one you want. You can also contact Rockstead themselves and see when they'll be running the model you want.

Thanks! If this was Reddit I would gift you a gold star or something. Appreciate the feedback anyway! I'm going to jump on the kou and possibly graduate from there. Really great ful of this thread. When I first considered buying a rockstead information was hard to come by unless you could read Japanese or Russian.

If you really want it bad enough you can pre-order one like I did thru a Rockstead retailer. He was able to tell me when the next production run for that knife was, he then contacted them to ensure mine would be included during that run. The Kou is discontinued however and the shin is only available in zdp I believe.

I think I saw that on their site too. There is 1 kou for sale and I've found a couple shin. I just saw the kou thumb studs. No dice. Thought it was the same as the shin. They are more higo. I prefer the shins more. I guess shin it is!

Whatever works best for you. My first one was the Chi, my second one will be the Shu but I'll have to wait until their next production run in June. I currently have t on order.

Does this thread have any info with different stropping setups? Besides benders sharpening input? Would a standard strop work or would I have to make the denim strop? Also, does anyone use diamonds or CNB? What micron would be suitable? Would 5 microns be too coarse? .0025 be too fine?

When people talk about stropping or sharpening a knife that's convex they use a padded surface for give. Rockstead suggests jeans pulled over a piece of wood. A hard surface. So which is it?

I have a 2.5 micron diamond paste and 1 micron strop and I can't tell if they've altered the finish at all because my knife is pretty scratched up. I actually haven't used them much on my rockstead and instead used the denim plus metal paste.

The soft surface is to promote the convex shape, but you can use a hard surface if you rock the blade to mimic the rounded shape of the convex grind. I have denim pulled over a card board box that has a small amount of give.

Just got the ol' rockstead shin today 😀 It's such a beautiful knife. I wonder how you all felt the first time you got a scratch on it. One thing I heard often while researching was how it was a production knife. I promise you that if you got production knife like this you would doo doo your pants amigo. I'll try to get some pics up later tapa talk is downs. Going to give it a carry today, but I doubt I'll use it!

Congrats!

I was a little hesitant to use mine at first, because I was worried I wouldn't be able to resharpen it. The first scratches I put on my Higo were from cutting some old silt fence...destroyed the edge too:(

If anyone is looking for a TEI-DLC, Rockstead Shop has one in stock for $1650.00.

They also have a HIGO-X-IW-ZDP ($1150.00) and a KOU-ZDP ($900.00).
