Do you clean the Chi without taking it apart?

Thanks for advice Blues. I would like to clean and lube once in a while. The Higo looks simpler to clean without taking it apart.

I do not. Typically, I'll roll up some tissue to clean inside the handle, and use an old toothbrush to scrub around the pivot. Then I put about 8 drops of Tuff-Glide in the pivot, let it soak for a few seconds, open the blade, and shake the excess TG out of the pivot. This "irrigates" anything in the pivot area.

I got the Chi on an impulse because of the blade shape. I was attracted to Higo because of ironwood handles and all the good things I read in this thread.

Thanks for the advice... I'll hold of on taking the Chi apart. For lube on all my other folders I either use gun oil, 1040 or synthetic motor oil.

I continue to stumble upon this thread time and time again.

Now I'm officially on the lookout for a Rockstead Shun!

Dangit, people.

Out of the two, which one do you like more?

Reason I ask, I because I have the same knives, and I can't decide which one I like better:D

I hope you the best. From here on, it's a nosedive downhill into bankruptcy. Prepare to sell your home for more Rocksteads...

...and don't say we didn't warn you!!!

:D

I got the Higo because of your posts Blues!! and I love ironwood, but I also like the tanto. I've only had them for 3 days.... been carrying Chi more then Higo. Too soon for me to tell.

I have to say that these knives are so much more impressive in 'real life' and in hand.

The thing is, I just got my Shirogorov Cannabis, and we are disgustingly in love right now. I don't know if I could get a Rockstead, simply because I'd have an affair going on, y'know?

Pics to help you relate to my conundrum (I know it's not a Rockstead, but I can't help but share, give me a break :p)

Yes, I totally agree, they are best appreciated in hand!

Eventually you'll come to a point where you will have a hard time deciding wether you should carry your Chi or your Higo, and all your other knives won't even matter. So, you'll end up taking both:D

My daily carry was a 95t cd shiro. Love shiros! I carry my Rockstead more... It's a different type of smooth. Terrific knives [emoji106]

Style of pocket clip affects carrying.

My three Rocksteads:

DSCN2512_zpspowgzk3w.jpg

A. SHUN(158g) - Deep carry, relatively long pocket clip - feels near weightless, although the largest/heaviest/longest, having relative flat but layered topographic titanium handles, couped with angular butts, almost disappears while in pocket. Machined slot on straight design deep carry pocket clip along with angular handle butts enhance easy removal from pocket.

C. TEI(155g) - Contour twist short deep carry pocket clip - ungainly with a twist/tilt heavy feel in pocket, having no slot milled on rather short clip and slim contour rounded handle butts within pocket - all contributed to awkwardness to remove from pocket.

B. SHIN(145g) - Conventional design with near straight proportionally long pocket clip - rather straight pocket clip design also give no hint of twisted feel, feel nearly as good as SHUN, although the lightest, somehow feels heavier than the heaviest SHUN.

Pictured above shown comparison on both the worst/best of the three design handle butt contour - for my sole assessments purpose only.

I carried my Chi to work today, and while I had some time off, I pulled the Chi out to fondle/look at/appreciate for a moment. For some reason, that tanto grind was lookin' really good today! When I got home, I sat there with both Rocky's in front of me, and I had that "new knife feeling" all over again. These knives just keep on giving! Never have I relived that same joy about any knives I've owned.

When I got my first Rockstead, the blade was what left the biggest impression on me. I kept going back to it, staring at its beauty, inspecting it for flaws; I was mesmerized by the outstanding craftsmanship! For a good 2 weeks, I had that joyous "new knife feeling" every time I looked into that beautiful blade, and today, I relived that feeling. I couldn't help but take some pictures that not only captures the beauty of these blades, but also, my affection for these knives:)

I hope you guys relive that feeling again soon. Hopefully, these pics may help you remember "your first time";):p:)

Beautiful pics, Blues!

There is something unique and special about people putting in hard work and so much care/craftsmanship into their work. Japanese knifes (being general) are exceptional, Rockstead inclusive. I have about 10 Japanese knives that I regularly use in the kitchen - I get that same satisfaction as the first day when I got them. I know the feeling you have Blues Bender!

Time line on my Rocksteads:

3/19/15 - questions posted regarding Rockstead's construction on various forums.

3/20/15 - hastily decided on a Higo, out of stock, back ordered with an expected 2-4 months wait from a mainland vendor...prefer more fascinating traditional Japanese clad ZDP...meanwhile, more consideration within the Rockstead line....never care for - short blade, other current blade steel, glued on wood/micarta handle and....

4/2/15 - clad ZDP SHIN was decided...cancelled Higo order... and ordered SHIN direct from Japan.

4/6/15 - SHIN's first day:

Almost to a year, decided on more Rocksteads....

3/3/16 - TEI's first day with a brother:

Anticipating new designs....HAP72 looks interesting......

I have to admit that since getting both Chi and Higo on the same day - the Chi has taken all the carry time. I think about carrying the Higo, but the Chi wins.

I got my Chi from someone on bladeforums and its a fairly early serial number (I dont know what number they are on now). I even found the original buyer on Youtube from a few years ago. Being an obsessive and compulsive I began thinking that this knife needs a clean and lube. The blade is still sharp as s*it with no chipping.

I figured someone has already registered the knife and Rockstead would not warranty it anyway. I took it apart today. The toughest part was getting the handle shell to open and the aluminum is quite 'soft'. I did not visibly scratch it, but I can feel the areas where I used a screwdriver to pry it.

It was quite simple to take the knife apart. There is a large pivot screw under the aluminum covers, which was easy to unscrew and washers underneath that. Overall, I was nervous as it was a first time and could not wait to put it back together. Reassembly was not difficult. I dont know what grease Rockstead uses, but I cleaned all of it off and used the old Hoppes 9 (use it on all my folders for years).

Overall, I realized that the design is such that the knife does not have to be taken apart often. Its now back in my pocket.

I did not take any photos and now kicking my self........
