Rockstead Knowledge Thread

I caught the Rockstead bug now. I love knives with ironwood scales and that landed me in this thread and the Higo. I understand that its not that simple to buy one either. What is the best way to find one? Im guessing that grabbing the first available and not being too picky on the steel.

Is the iron wood higo as smooth as the shin? I've heard that the frame locks are not as smooth. True or nah? Plus the ironwood higo is a liner so...

I don't have a Shin, but my Higo-X has a stronger lockbar than my Chi, thus feeling "less smooth". It still feels fine though, just has different action.

What a coincidence! I'm watching your videos. I know you have the chi and higo ironwood. Great content btw [emoji3][emoji106]. So if you could keep just 1. Which would it be and why? I'm on a mission to get the yxr7 but having a little trouble deciding on which knife to get. I think if a shin in yxr came up for sale is get it right now.

Thanks!

If I had to keep one, I would flip a coin to make the decision easier:D

[emoji19][emoji19][emoji19]. Lol. I hear ya though! I'll interpret that as they are both excellent knives. Based on your previous comment though I think I know which setup I will go for next. Thank you! And if I had not said it before I appreciate your taking the time to share your experience and know how with the rest of the English speaking world! Beers on me if I ever run into you! Thanks my friend, I'm glad I was able to help!

Which one are you leaning towards?

Thanks... I've been emailing back and forth Tom. He said it was just delivered today. Im thinking about it really a tough choice as I want to hold out for DLC.... and the meantime considering other models. Im driving my self crazy. This thread is very helpful.

Huh? Did you order one already? I can offer my sources for 3 different yxr7 knives if you're interested. I'm all for sharing [emoji4]. Not sure if I can post it here. If so then I will!

I know of a few YXR7 Kou's for sale. If you're interested on info, email me.

If you're really wanting a larger blade though, I would just wait it out. A Chi or Shin will pop up eventually.

I read it as the Shun being the new addition

Precisely! But your interpretation is without prejudice!

He posted his new Shun a couple pages ago. This isn't a Spyderco thread, and it's not a "Look at the mirror polished blades that I did" thread either.

It can be two pages ago or twenty years from now, if no more new purchase....SHUN will remain my "new" addition! And if I like to post SHUN with "other" knives...well....I leave that to your imaginations.......

Slightly off topic, but I am soon acquiring a fixed blade from Kiku Matsuda. It's his Shinobi model, which translates to "ninja".

Why am I talking about this in a Rockstead thread? Well, I was intrigued to find out that Matsuda-San uses a similar grinding technique to Rocky's Honzukuri grind, except he calls his grind Hamaguri-ba. I am intrigued to try out another grind (which I believe) will be similar to a Rockstead fixed blade. Another thing that is unique about Matsuda-San's knives is the use of OU-31 steel, which is hardened to about 64hrc:eek:

Has anyone else experienced his work? Am I correct that Hamaguri-ba is similar to Honzukuri?

^^^Your Post, two pages back(page 46 to be precise!)^^^

Your very first sentence(I highlighted in RED)...you acknowledged being "off topic"....I suppose it is fine....because "ONLY" you can...LOL!!??

Although I did not mention anything Spyderco or as you imply that was my intent - "This isn't a Spyderco thread, and it's not a "Look at the mirror polished blades that I did" thread either".......

This one just for you Blues Bender:

TEI received one week before the SHUN - both within the month of March/2016:

Lol at posted the pic with another knife brand! A jab of sorts. (Btw I'm 100% not involved. Nor do I have an opinion about the matter) [emoji897]

Victor,

Did you notice that I was asking about comparisons to the grinds?

I know sooner or later you'll be posting pics of your Corvette here and preaching to us about "what we can't afford" I felt the previous post in question was off topic, just like your first post in here calling me out about something that happened nearly a year ago...

At this point, I'm just going to let it go. Post whatever makes you happy, buddy:thumbup:

So this is completely non bias. Victor your post says another joining the mirror edge family(or something like that) which could only imply the Spyderco since you already showed a pic of the shun(very nice btw) if we are being honest I think most people who read that post got the impression you were showing the spydie.(nice job with the polish btw) so benders point is valid. And his question about the grind is not Rockstead but on topic technically. The posts before were questions about grinds and such(asked my be) now if the mirror edges were being discussed then I think your post would have been on track. Kudos for at least including your shun. I've forgotten what my point was.... Carry on [emoji4]

I'm just here for the knife porn, so if it has a picture of a Rockstead I'm calling it fair game[emoji14]
