Rockstead Knowledge Thread

So i've got my heart on picking up a Chi, but I can not find anywhere that has them in stock. Does anyone here know of where I can buy one, or know of any leads? Any help is much appreciated! I'm only interested in the yxr7 dlc coated model.

I looked around the web for a new one and was not able to find one - about a week ago. So I ended up buying a used one. I think you have to get on a waiting list if you want a brand new one.

In the meantime.... the Chi for me is an outstanding knife especially now that I've seen it under the skirt. My only gripe is the pocket clip. Not only does it not look right from design perspective, but its completely different material to the rest of the knife. Im still carrying it daily.

Look at the Chi clip next to Shiro Hati.

Did you buy yours from someone off of the forums? He was selling a bunch of knives? If so its not registered. [emoji106]

I did get it from the forums. He said he did not register it, but he was not sure if previous owners did. I wonder what will happen if I try an register it?

I'd say it's worth a shot. Worst case scenario they tell you the warranty is non transferable. As long as it's not reported stolen you should be gravy. They must understand at Rockstead that their is a huge secondary market. Good luck man. For what it's worth... The chi's blade grind seems like the easier of the two to sharpen. Or send it to blues! Lol

the sharpening is not a problem. I have about 10 kitchen knives which are Aogami Super steel at 61-63 rockwell and Im used to sharpening the chipping from those knives. I'll give the registration a try tonight and see what happens. btw thanks for your suggestions earlier!

The hardness is a non issue. In fact, both YXR7 and ZDP-189 are not very wear resistant steels. My YXR7 blades both sharpen up ridiculously easy, but the catch is trying to maintain a fully convex grind/edge while trying not to ruin the mirror polish.

Lately, I've been running a little trial. I have been sharpening my Higo-X (Honzukuri) with methods that keep it all convex. However, my Chi (Shinogizukuri) has been sharpened on a ceramic stone like its a V-ground edge lately. The fully-convex shape is no longer there, the mirror polish is still intact, and it also seems to cut better and take a more keen edge.

You will not ruin the mirror on 2000 grit sandpaper or the Spyderco ceramic stone.

Interesting, you are turning your Chi into a saber ground blade. When I look at the edge on a Chi with a naked eye - its really hard to tell that it is convex. Nothing wrong with developing a saber grind especially in YXR7. I would think that it would be better for hacking on a bamboo then a convex.

Everyone who sharpens own knives says that maintaining a convex edge is simple. I've watched virtuovice on Youtube strop and reprofile convex edges. He is a great source for how to on convex edges.

The finish can be scratched by sandpaper or ceramic, quite easily.

The Chi has two convex bevels, and actually, a convex edge is thicker than a V-grind. Personally, I'm not a big fan of convex edges, and I've been thoroughly impressed with this "hybrid" edge on my Chi lately.

Hm... I can't figure it out. They both have box papers etc. for whatever reason the yxr7 is noticably lighter. Thanks for the reply ✌️

I stropped my shin last night. Used a cut up pair of jeans over wood. Used liquid flitz as the compound. Did about 2 passes and noticed a bunch of scratches to my mirror finish. What did I do wrong? I can see them but can't get it to photograph.

We're the jeans clean? How much pressure did you use? Did you use liquid Flitz, or the paste that comes in a tube? Are you sure they are scratches and not smears? I assume you tried wiping the blade off?

Yeah the jeans were an older pair from storage. They were clean. I used the liquid flitz. I'd say about the weight of the blade. I was pretty hesitant to do it because it was my first time doing convex. They are definitely scratches. I used a chamois and microfiber cloth to clean the wet flitz off. They aren't deep scratches but very noticeable.

Here's the best pics I could get. It's worse than this. It runs up and down the edge. It was actually worse, but I used a .5 diamond paste on leather and got some of it out.
