love your humor .reminds me of ed fowlers fairy tale in recent blade mag. knife was so sharp' cut a bull lengthwise. bull didnt fea l it ;kept right on breeding cows'

I've wanted to sample one of these Rosta-Frei knives for a while for review, especially the one with the patented Dread Lock. I hope it doesn't turn out to be plain old 1095 carbon.

That's a good one Mr. Tom Anderson!:D I have another story about you that one have to wait. More important is some history.

The Rosta-Frei Steel has been around for very long time. Knife expert Bernard Levine has many pieces of the early work. The oldest one dates from about 1920 and has cannibus Micarta handle. He says it worth almost three thousand dollars in today's street value and definitely is most authentic example of early cannibus use.

Here at Rosta-Frei we try to come up with improvement all the time. We have try hot roll, cold roll, Russian snow roll, egg roll, all KINDS of rolling to come up with a better blade steel. Mostly we end up eating or sleeping but that another story….One thing we try is pattern welding steel. We ask Bruce Evans of the Bladeforums.com how we could get more patterns in the steel. He just smile and suggested something little stronger than what we been rolling! Ja Mon!

The customer satisfaction is most important thing here at Rosta-Frei Steel. We ask everyone who own Rosta-Frei products what matters to them the most. They want a blade that will chop, cut, slice, dice, puree, liquefy, and drain. I don’t know, maybe they need blender…..They want to shave arm hair, leg hair, head hair and pubic hair…I tell them to lay off the Rosta-Frei for a little while if they think of shaving pubic hair! That's why Rosta-Frei is #1, we take care of our customer!

At Rosta-Frei we are most proud of our innovative lock. We call it the Dread Lock (copywrited, so watch out!) This amazing lock work so good you can hang 2000 kilo "package" from it with no failure whatsoever. Just watch your fingers if you hang one more gram on there because at 2000 kilos plus one gram the knife finally exhibited catastrophic failure! That why we call it the "dread lock" because you never know….Ja Mon. We still #1, even Benchmade never beat that one!

HAAAAA!!!!!!!! Too funny!!
Whatever you're smokin', RostaFrei, pass it here, mon!!!

Arguably one of the greatest threads ever

I just did some testing comparing Rosta Frei with ZDP-189. No contest, Rosta Frei holds an edge longer with a way thinner edge. It was so sharp I heard some small popping as I cut stuff, I think it was because the edge was splitting the atoms of whatever I was cutting.
Fortunately Rosta Frei is tough enough it didn't chip out after splitting atoms, there are a few spots with some mild rolling, but that steeled out with just a few swipes.
It'll be decades before Crucible catches up with this stuff!

I've always liked how Rosta-Frei performs. It sharpens up and holds an edge better than any carbon steel, yet leaves no worry about rusting. The only issue I've found from extended periods of use is that it leaves me with the munchies.

I was going to work up a trade where I could get a RostFrei knife in exchange for all the Spydercos, Kershaws, and Benchmades that I own. I really want some of that hard-use steel. And the Dread Lock, oh yeah.

Unfortunately, RostaFrei hasn't posted since 2002 :(

True, but his legacy lives. :p

Over on the Spyderco forum, I saw where Sal Glesser really is testing some Rosta-Frei for a prototype model they're calling the "Ganja."

Josh, are you sure you didn't get a defective batch? Call Jamaica and send your knife in-they'll take care of you. No way should that steel be rolling on something soft like atoms.

Oh wait, I forgot, Rosta-Frei doesn't have a warranty because nothing ever breaks.

:D

I remember reading this thread way back when and almost spit my coffee on my keyboard/monitor.

Don't mind at all bringing this great thread back to life, but always want to know what happened to Rostafrei. He comes in here with a gut busting thread starter and disappears (:.

I have also enjoyed all the responses (read them all).
