Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Jack, gotta get one of those Dog Bones if only for the whistle,an sheath......Great deal
for sure.....
I think your Japan knife above was a earlier parker,or frost wasn't it?......I've had a couple.

And speaking of Hammer Brand, this is my favorite of their last run from few years ago.....It's almost
identical to the older more expensive Schatt.Morgan, but no where near the price......It's hard to find
one under $20.00 though since their hard to find and such well made too...((That's oil you see all over
the blade)))oil n dust..

Thanks for all the great Knives, and tips,
JD

It does look like a Parker knife, doesn't it? Something about the color and quality of the bone....It doesn't have any markings besides HI-Stainless (dunno what that is) Japan. His usually said Surgical Stainless. It could have been made in the same factory he contracted, very well made and solid feeling.

I think that is the most likely explanation. I know a guy who bought a huge consignment of them in 1970, about 20 different patterns, though I've only seen one of the Muskrats (but I've known him less than 5 years). He must have sold a lot of them over the years, but still has a garage full he reckons. The stamps vary, even on the same patterns, some say 'Stainless Steel', some 'Hi-Stainless', some say 'Japan', others don't. The only brand I've seen on any of them is 'Solar'. I think they're really nice knives, and I particularly like a 2-blade Jack about the size of a #15, and a locking-Barlow the same size, where the pen is depressed to release the lock. I'd buy a whole load of these knives off him, but he's a strange character, mostly when I do bump into him at a market, he only has a few knives for sale. Only once have I seen him with a good range, and that was the first time I met him.

That's a nice one JD

Both of these, a Boker Plus and a Rough Rider, cost me less than $30 between the two - amazingly well put-together knives that cut like demons! This was my carry yesterday, and the first day in years that I've gone entirely without a modern folder.

That's two great looking knives at any price.

Well I pulled the trigger on a Hammer sunfish whittler and unfortunately it came with a large pin crack and a gap between the bone and brass liner that you could stick a business card in. Back to the shop to see what the next one looks like.

Also picked up a Rough Rider sunfish and it's great. Tobacco bone with acorn shield and while the bone is lighter than it should be I like the color.
I'll try to pay some pictures when the new Hammer shows.

Comeuppance -

Where did you get that Boker Plus with grooved bolsters and jigged bone handle? I love it. I've check my usual dealers and none seem to have it.

Neko, that RR sunfish makes a nice EDC. I'm carrying mine today. FYI a medium size Case belt sheath will fit the sunfish, should you prefer a belt carry.
I think that "tobacco" bone is more of a honey color, at least on mine.

As far as I can tell, they're discontinued and sold out everywhere. I picked mine up off the auction site while trying to find a 'nut to call my own so I could give the platform a shot. If I had known they were so hard to find, I would have grabbed both the seller had!

While I'm taking pictures: I got this RR Dogbone Jack some time back. Under $10 and comes with a clipped sheath and very shrill whistle!

I ordered two of these back in November, one with the acorn shield and the other with the bone shield. Unfortunately, they've been on back order for a bit, but are supposed to be coming in this week. I really like this pattern, based on what I've seen of it. Looking forward to getting it in hand.

I really like that lighter bone on the ends of the covers. Nice Knife, Rachel!

Here you go. :)

I looked that one up and decided the sheath itself was worth the money - I just ordered one in smooth tobacco bone with an acorn shield, along with two Colts that caught my eye (CT610 and CT607)

The problem with inexpensive knives, as I'm sure has been stated a million times in this thread, is that you might end up buying so many that you go broke regardless...

Thanks! I didn't take a picture of the pile side, but the bone is much darker - almost matching the cord holding the whistle. It doesn't bother me a bit on a knife in this price range, but not everyone appreciates a "harlequin" handle. :)

I often don't mind different or "non-matching" covers. It gives me two personalities to the same knife. Donna says it's the Gemini in me.

have the RR work knife/sodbuster in amber bone. Have carried a few times and it is big...practice to see if the GEC Texas camp knife will be doable. the RR has a good pull of 7 which is good as the lockback doesn't engage. the seller never contacted me so the big retailer-Am gave me a credit which I used to order another canoe.:D

the work knife is otherwise solid, really good snap, centered and no wobble. it has found a home on my small FAK that I keep in my work duffle.
my larger FAK in the car will need one now...or a large camp knife.

I finally decided to get one of these.....Not sure I'll keep knife, but I do need that sheath,an whistle....

I bought one because I really like the double end jack and am sick of the nearly ubiquitous pen blade, and thinking that I would pay the asking price for just the sheath. And am glad I bought mine happy with getting the sheath for that price. Mine has gaps, blade wobble, wonky shield, the small blade is a nail breaker, the large is almost floppy and didn't come all that sharp. And the bolsters are really yellow, and the shield is proud and wonky. And both blades aren't parallel to the spine, need to file the kicks.
The clip sheath holds my Camillus #67 really well, though.

OUCH,it sounds like you got one from the dumpster divers......I've never had that problem with a ROUGH RIDER.
This may be my first, but for lil over a dozen and some change Im sure i'll still be happy.....I'll let everyone know how
I like it....Hate you got a ZONKER though, maybe send the knife back and keep the rest?...Masybe they'll replace it?....
