From where I'm sitting, this just seems to be a case of miscommunication.....
I've purchased an item from Robert/TBE in the past -- sure, it was a single purchase, but it was for a decently costly knife, and Robert's handling of the purchase (despite some confusion on my end, LOL), was
exceptional, and I would not hesitate to purchase from him again, particularly with his prices and selection. He's a good guy running a good business.
Bagheera is a very well respected member of the on-line knife-enthusiast community. I also have done a deal with him in the past, and can say with certainty that he is a true gentleman and one of the most thoughtful traders that I've ever dealt with. As with Robert, I also would not hesitate to do business again with Bagheera, who is also a good guy in my books.
In this particular case here, I think that what happened is simply a case of miscommunication, which is so often what happens when we sit down at our keyboards, and respond only to the written letters and words flashing on our screens.
Through this digital media, we take away nearly all subtleties of human inter-relationships. We cannot see each other's body language nor facial expressions, and we can't even detect each other's spoken "tone" as we can over the phone.
Bagheera and Robert's phone conversation attests to this fact.
How this thread and their inter-relationship degenerated was through simple mis-interpretation of Bagheera's expectations and intent as well as through Robert's admitted over-the-top retort.
Bagheera's culture inherently ties any retailer to the integrity of the products that they sell (more on this later). However, being an international gentleman himself, Bagheera is also very aware that in our culture, the retailer is not to be faulted, and instead, was trying to trace a point-of-contact back to the product manufacturer.
This would be akin to if a second-hand X brand knife failed on me, and as I bought it from a third party, I did not have the proper contact information, and decided to e-mail a known retailer Y of this product to see if I could procure a contact address for X manufacturer. There is, in my view as an American, nothing wrong with this knid detective work.....especially as Bagheera never intended to blame TBE for this piece. However, his pursuit may have generated the misunderstanding.
Robert/TBE has been known to stand behind every product they sell -- and more, to even stand-up for the enthusiast community and to "tell it as it is" for items which do not pass muster with Robert for quality of either performance or aesthetics (those of you who are Microholics will certainly know what I am talking about here). Perhaps this type of integerity then generated within Robert a more defensive mindset than he usually would have taken, and resulted in the rather rude reply he gave to Bagheera here -- for which Robert has graciously offered an apology for. Certaily, as a human being, Robert's reactions are more than understandable, particularly at this Holiday shopping-crunch junction, where he's running his ass off to fulfull our gift requests.
I hope that none of you will judge either Bagheera or Robert/TBE too harshly or prematurely for what has happened here. They're two truly great guys who were just caught out by this situation.
