sage 5 compression lock in honor of Sal...

WOOT!
If it goes with compression lock you can expect my order in. But I am curious what the 3 locks being discussed are

I know - talk about throwing gasoline on the fire :)

Sal is a marketing genius! Now I'm going to stay up at night thinking about this.

I would love a comp lock sage, with orange g10. Very curious about the three locks being discussed...

I would love to see the compression lock next, but I have a funny feeling it will not happen this time. Also I do not htink they will do G-10 again since they already did it on the 3.
Hopefully Sal will have updates for us soon.

Its true that m390 is a better cutting steel. but if you tone back the cutting for a bit better rust resistance and stronger material than its more balanced. I like m390 but it wouldnt last a week where I live (sea water in the air is murder on knives) M4 is a little more balanced but still has a strong cutting steel. a minor step down in cutting preformance to make up in other fields. Still better edge retention than most steels
 oh boy

You've already stated that you had'em mixed up, I know. I literally live a block away from the ocean, and in my experience, I've had no issues with rust or stains in m4, even somewhat neglecting it. The only steel that I've had troubles with was super blue..but it looks kinda cool

Compression lock sounds excellent!! How about foilage green G-10? That would be cool.

+1 this,
But I'd happily buy one if it's done in Micarta.
Sadly, for the comp lock, it sounds like we'll have to wait until Sage 7, 8, or 9+...
Until then, my EDC rotation consists of a Blue/M390 PM2 and a (CF) Sage 1.

Just thinking out loud - my guess is that it's going to either be a button-lock, or an Axial lock (though Sal's comment about how there's 3 really leaves me wondering what the third could be - ball-bearing possibly?).

I posted this in the other thread, but there are only so many lock-types out there in the folding world. I doubt we'll see an auto, but an assisted might be nice (don't know how it would work with a Spyder-hole unless you only flick). Sal has already commented that a flipper is unlikely in the Sage series

Axis Lock - currently under patent, very unlikely. Also, this would absolutely destroy sales of the Griptilian (no offense to any Benchmade buffs out there)
Tri-Ad Lock - currently under patent, pretty unlikely. Also, the Sage 4 being a mid-lock makes two back-lock-style knives in a row pretty unlikely
Arc Lock - currently under patent, pretty unlikely. Although, the Sogzilla isn't exactly ignoring all of Spyderco's engineering in the Delica :)
Ball-bearing Lock - possible. This would be a mini-er (more mini) Manix-2? I kind of like that idea - and if it's not caged, it would be even cooler (or different rather - like they did back on some of the old-school models - I don't have anything against the Caged ball-bearing lock on my Manix-2).
Compression Lock - possible. This is my favorite choice, but I doubt we'll see it for another couple of Sage models.
Friction Lock - possible, but unlikely.
Slip Joint - possible I guess, but probably not very likely.
Axial Lock - very possible. This would be a cool option in my opinion - especially with a fancier handle-material.
Button Lock - possible. My only problem with this lock is that in my personal opinion, it looks best on a CF-scaled knife and with the Sage 1 already having used CF, I doubt it would be what I've got pictured in my mind (which is not to say that it wouldn't be awesome).
Phantom Lock - obviously possible. I only recently learned about the Meerkat and how it works (and that they're bringing it back!) so I'm not sure how cool this lock even is (but I would be interested in owning a Sage with it).

When it comes down to materials, again - there's really only a few left out there without jumping the price up quite a bit above the Sage's target market:

FRN (which I doubt we'll see on a Sage series if they didn't use it on the Sage 3) - this would be absolutely awesome though. FRN on a knife the size of the Sage with the Sage's choil? In Orange! I say YES!
Linen/canvas Micarta - I'm guessing this is the most-likely next scale material
Glass-Fiber - I've never owned a Spyderco in this material, but I'm sort of excited about some of the upcoming 2012 models that sport GF scales
Jigged-Bone or Stag - This would be really cool to me. I don't know if Spyderco has ever done this yet.
Twill - I could do Twill
Stainless - Tattoo'd like the Dragonfly please :)
Aluminum - Meh
Acrylic - I can picture maybe some fake mother-of-pearl, or Ivory-look or something cool like that.

I could see some 3D machining on G10, or SS/Alum/Ti as mixing things up a bit.

We should start a pool of some sort (if that's not against the rules here) and post your guess as to what the Sage 5's lock and scale materials are going to be. Winner get's the pool (or a free Spyderco maybe?)!

Compression lock and micarta or g-10 whatever colour
The idea of m390 or cpm-m4 is, as Spoelie said - would be a dream come true !
Ill definitely buy at least one!

So the next lock will be an in house design? I remember that the AG Russell/Carson one hand knife design was mentioned. Is that still being considered for the Sage series?

Hi Owl,

Thanx much for the kind words. I'm sure we'll make one in time, but we'd like to get the others out first. We have locks that we invented years ago that we still haven't been able to get into production (Stop-lock). We just came up with another new lock idea last month.
