SAK Mods! Post your pics, questions and ideas

91mm Spartan donor
Brass liners and pins. Patina stained moose horn. Modified penblade. I’m not sure I would call my builds “mods” since they basicly only have the tools from the original SAK. Most knifemakers I met buy blades from a smith, then makes a handle and a sheath, and of course design their own shape…
Anyway, I still find this building-modding quite fun. Next step is building a good setup so I can hiss the slots for toothpick and tweezers with my Dremel 😊

Work in progress:

74mm size

4 layers

10 tools

58mm, 74mm, and 84mm/91mm parts

Basically I'm still figuring stuff out before I actually build it for real, so any comments/suggestions are welcome. :)

edit: update
hook.jpg

This image shows how I modified the area around the parcel hook's pivot hole.

The top one is an unmodified hook. The bottom one is the modified hook.

First I put a notch in the back to make the hook fully engage with the backspring in the open position. Then I flattened the bottom area a little in order to give the hook a more solid half stop. Lastly I removed a tiny amount of material in the front section in order to allow the hook to stay fully seated when the hook snaps to the closed position.

These small modifications were necessary to make the parcel hook function properly in a 74mm SAK. The hook will still fit without being altered, but it will be just a bit too loose and it won't stay fully open. With these minor adjustments, the hook is nice and and snappy in all 3 positions (closed, half stop, and fully opened).

I received a voyager lite with working digital clock scale in the mail yesterday and now I am wondering what to do with it. I dont want the lite and am thinking should I make another faux yeoman time keeper or a compact timekeeper digital or something else. I have been holding onto an explorer, fisher and waiter that are lightly used from the auction site the so I have some parts. I carry pretty regularly a yeoman or a compact.

So I am thinking of a build but in reality I might be better off just slapping the clock scale on a compact and moving on. Anyone see an interesting build in there that I'm not?

Cheers,

My first alox mod. I call it The Timberbeast, my vision of the ultimate SAK for camping trips. A mix match of old parts. Sort of an Electrican Plus X.

That is a really nice mod! Would you share where you got the screws from? I am trying to do a Alox mod myself, but cannot find screws, and I am incapable getting the peening right.

I went to Custom Forge for the new pivots. Keep in mind though, that these parts came from Russia. Due to recent events, purchasing was not exactly straightforward, and the parts took 5 months to arrive. But they did eventually arrive, and the quality is superb.

Thanks for the info, but i will pass on them. I won't be ordering from Russia anytime soon.

Might be time to chat to one of our resident modders and talk turkey

So I made this tiny cuticle pusher into a tiny chisel:
spoon-a.jpg

It's my first time doing this mod and it's not pretty, but it seems to work well enough.

But look how the nail nick is right on top of the edge now:
spoon-b.jpg

Did I screw this up? Did I remove too much material?

Should I toss this one out? I don't want to peen this into a SAK if it's already lost 90% of its usefulness, but I also don't have another cuticle pusher to start over with.

🤷‍♂️

Looks like you stopped just in time. If you buy used, TSA confiscated Mini Champs, the cuticle pushers are usually in pristine condition.

Is this normal?

Look how the ruler is angled compared to the nail file. The ruler leans a little too much to one side. I haven't done anything to modify the ruler or the springs.

What...?
