Sanrenmu 7010 vs CRKT Drifter

I'm saying using the Alias, CRKT S2, and Benchmade 750 as examples of this is ridiculous.

If you can find me an actual example of a member being hypocritical about actual stolen designs, I will cry foul along side you.

Part of the problem is that that we all have different standards how to define copy, counterfeit, etc.

There is no question that the Sanrenmu 7010 is patterned after the Sebenza. None. But, it's not marked, packaged or sold as a Sebenza, so it's not a counterfeit and it's not really close enough to be a clone. So, it's a copy, at best. Even that can be questioned. So what is it? It's just a cheap knife thats poorly styled after an expensive successful design. I certainly would not purchase one if I was after a true Sebenza.

Not bragging here, but the truth (for me at least) is I can afford not to bother with the whole clone vs counterfeit thing. If I ever want a Sebenza (which I currently don't), I'll buy one. The closest I have ever come to buying a knockoff is the Taiwan Lightning OTF auto. However, that was before I knew any better. I personally regard Sanrenmu, and particularly the 7010 just a step or two above Ganzo in the scumbag knockoff scale.

When all is said & done it is the buyers choice to decide whether they wish to wait and save up for the real deal, or buy now and possibly compromise some of their values. It is the individuals choice, and I can respect that.
What I don't respect is a person attempting to justify that purchase with BS, and then they (along with other apologists) get offended when members voice their opinions about what they posted.

Best of luck on your seraches. That is one of the most fun parts of this hobby.

And I wouldn't purchase one even if it wasn't "a copy, at best" because Sanremu's history of blatantly stealing other designs (like the axis lock).

"Copying" designs without credit or permission is still stealing. No grey-area for me.

He already bought one. We are trying to help you!

On the subject of helping, I found evilgreg's post to be more helpful than everyone else's posts combined. The only other helpful post was the one by Planterz that discussed warranty coverage or lack thereof.

Evilgreg was trying to help me; most everyone else IMO was trying to further their own agendas. Not that these's anything inherently wrong with that, but I specifically pointed out in the first post of this thread that I'm not interested in politics.

If you're interested in politics and intellectual property, all the more power to you, but you could do it on your own thread.

If anyone cares, and it seems that many of you do, I have decided that I will not be purchasing the SRM 7010, not because of its resemblance to the more expensive knife, but because of the lack of warranty coverage. I'll wait until Walmart offers the Drifter/Viva package and buy that, provided that the blade steel is 8cr13MOV or better.

I will then use the Drifter for a while (at home but not in the community) and if I like it, I'll keep it. If not I'll gift it to someone who is knifeless but could use one, provided it's safe, of course. Oh yeah and who knows about the crazy local knife laws....

Sorry, but that's not how discussion threads work. The thread isn't your personal property. If you post a politically volatile subject, you can't expect it not to ruffle feathers.

The Sanrenmu is like $7 shipped. Warranty really shouldn't be a factor in your decision.

Funny quote from somebody that stole their avatar picture, which is of a copyrighted character. Maybe if Sanremu just slapped their name next to somebody else's knife instead of copying them you'd be OK with it.

Getting a bit personal.

P.s. I haven't paid royalties to the moon for years!

A company that doesn't stand behind their product. How much are fingers worth these days?

I wouldn't trust my fingers with the 710; not after the lock on the 710 turned out to be about the weakest frame lock ever tested.

Oh wait, I had that mixed up. That was the Sebenza, wasn't it? ;)

Please tell me you know how ludicrous that argument is. ;)

I find this whole conversation ludicrous. I have a hard time believing that any grown adult cares this much about what kind of pocket knife somebody that they've never met buys and carries. You've posted your opinion. Some people agree. Others don't care. What more are you hoping to accomplish at this point? Do you honestly believe that your next post is going to convince somebody that they've been wrong up to this point?

I don't think it's ludicrous that on a knife forum people are passionate about knives, and don't like to see people supporting knife companies that are thieves.

I find it ludicrous that anyone who is passionate about the subject and the community could support such companies.

I don't know if I will change any minds, but I hope I do.

This.
Way to keep it classy despite his, shall we say "lame" attempt to further his argument. Sheesh.

What are your thoughts on the Spyderco Military Vs the Sebenza?

It's not the passion that's ludicrous. It's the hypocrisy. You buy and use knives that are copies and ripoffs. You just define the term differently in an attempt to justify what you do. The only difference between you and the people buying the 7010 is that they aren't as self righteous. It's OK. I really don't care that you buy copies and ripoffs. I'm happy that you're happy with them. I won't even try to convince you that you're a terrible person or that the knife industry is going to crumble because of the knives that you prefer. It's really not that serious.

What copies have I bought and when did I say those things?
