SanRenMu 710

Cziv , its not just knives (or the 710) , amost everything is cheaper in the US it seems . you guys pay peanuts for most stuff far as I can tell. Food , Petrol , housing , In fact its been noted that food that we export to you is actually cheaper for you to buy in the US than it is for us in our own country. But then again we have free health care and a minimum wage thats waay higher than the USA as far as I know. USA vendors would do well to offer shipping to AUS since by our standards we're still getting a bargain in most cases even with shipping , even tho some have 40$ shipping on a velcro patch worth $5 (whats with that ??).

I don't think I've heard a single good thing about sending knives or anything else to Australia. I feel bad for anyone there. Between high prices and, if true, customs going through your stuff, it is a crappy situation. Though it is true that there is a opportunity to sell there, or in most places out of the US.

Are we talking taxing?
Years ago, I was there, maybe 10 or more.
Luxury tax was killing folks that wanted photo gear, so used to ship it to them from here.
Back then, 50% luxury tax if I recall.
I was buying and sending to friends at half the price it cost on the shelf there, and it was being made closer in Japan!

Dont feel too bad riz , all in all Oz is probably one of the best places to live on earth. I've never ever lost any orders in the mail (Auspost is tops) customs only ever seem to open the most non threatening knives , and theres no import duties or taxes to pay.
Also our economic situation is pretty good at the moment.

Thebish - That'd be the good old Goods and Services Tax (GST) 10% for stuff bought in the stores.

Some people seem to have a lot more problems than others. I have never had a knife rejected or stolen by customs. Tax is not the issue and accounts for a relatively small part of the cost of knives. Privately imported knives are generally not subject to tax or duties unless quantities or value suggest commercial dealings.

The volume is not there to support low margins and markup on knives is pretty high in retail stores (as it is in many retail stores in the US). If you exclude kitchen knives, the knife trade in Australia is relatively small.

There are a few local on line dealers that offer good prices but generally it is more cost effective to import them yourself. The biggest problem I have is when there is an issue with the knife - postage costs are a barrier to returning goods.

Any good and safe places to buy this?

I used exduct.
No problems, a bit long on delivery, they do not take credit cards but paypal, which I prefer to a CC anyway as no info is exchanged.
$80 worth of knives costs about $20 to ship.
But their prices seem the lowest overall, and they carry SRM, Navy, Bee, Gonza.

I think it took about 2 weeks to ship total, not horrible. And noticed the shipping creep up as each knife was added so maybe they go by weight? Also, paypal gets a cut and I'm sure that may be built into the shipping.
Still, 8 knives, decent quality, was $99 and change.

I'd go with them again.

Went with the SanRemu guy on 2 knives on ebay. Higher price per and shipping was $10, $6.50 first, $3.50 each additional so do the math, he's more.

SRM knives look to be unique for Chinese produced knives. Here, we are familiar with inexpensively made knives produced at, to most of us anyway, anonymous factories in China or Taiwan. These knives are either bought in bulk by a U.S. based importer and sold here or they are produced under contract for a U.S. manufacturer and sold here under the contractors name (as with Taylor Cutlery and United, etc.)

Most of these knives are hit and miss in terms of quality. The steel and heat treat may be unknown. Occasionally we see the same, identical pattern of knife down to the material of the scales, sold under two or more brand names (Boker, Cold Steel, etc.) This can make a fella suspicious. These knives cut string and open boxes and so they sell.

Sanrenmu looks to be trying to establish a brand name and producing knives with some serious attention to construction and detail. This is a bit different. I don't know if they are the first to do this, maybe Fury brand knives tried this, but it is worth noting that SRM's strategy looks to be a bit different. Or maybe it's just that I'm unfamiliar with it so it looks new to me.

Lol, only felt bad for the ordering knives bit. Seems like a great place otherwise.

Got mine from china from an ebay seller who uses sanmenru in his handle. ended up getting the knife (a 710) for $6 with another $6.75 in shipping. Took about a week and a half. Not bad.

Mine was $4.50 - a promotion by Exduct. Incredible that it can be made at this quality level for the price !

I got three orders from him too, all came safe, no strange PayPal or bank account activity.

Same here.

Same here. He's my SRM guy too. Discounted shipping with extras.

I bought 1 and liked it so much I bought 4 more in a second order: 1 for my daughter, 1 for her fiancee, 1 for my brother and 2 for me.

I sterilized them with alcohol & peroxide (bird flu phobia) then put 2 drops of mineral oil in the pivots like someone suggested.

I've carefully stropped my already sharp 710's until sad to say - they may be the sharpest of the many folders (some higher end) that I own.

Crazy sharp in fact! :D

Their 8cr13mov (and Buck's 420HC) has become one of my favorite steels to work with. It gets crazy sharp without much effort and then retains a good edge for long enough to actually do some work.

I used my 710 everyday at my last job for opening/breaking down boxes. The edge could go at least a week or two before I felt like I had to sharpen it again. Then, I would just sharpen with some lansky crock sticks and a strop. I only had to use my DMT diasharp once in the six months that I used the knife and that was to repair a roll I put in the edge by hitting a staple. Even that sharpening only took about 10-15 minutes.
