SanRenMu 710

The reason these are so cheap is they are made for the chinese market I think . If these were sold in the west , add another 20$ , at least here in oz.

oh yeah , ive already seen these knives in stores with $30au price tags.

Robert , customs opened my srm packages and passed the knives , so you shouldnt have any probs.

A lot of knives look like others. The Schrade LB7 sure looked a hell of a lot like a Buck 110 but it never kept anyone from buying them but I'm sure a lot of folks wondered how such a blatant copy would be legal at the time. In the end there is more similarity between the Buck 110 and Schrade LB7 than there is with the Sebenza and the so called Sebenza clone called the Sanrenmu 710. Superficial looks do not mean they are the same. You have to look deeper. Even on those that look to be exact clones there are probably differences. As I recall from something I read the other day on the forums, Les Paul Guitar lost law suits in court for the same reason when people could distinguish one guitar at a distance from the other. They may be similar but if not identical they are not the same and thats just the way it is apparently and all it takes to make it a non issue.

So if you can tell at a glance or at a distance that the Sebenza is not the Sanrenmu and the Sanrenmu is not the Sebenza they are different enough to be a non issue. So in other words its okay to be similar just not the same. While I'll be the first to agree there are some questionable knives in that line up from the companies we are discussing I bet side by side they are not the same. My guess is that just enough difference exists to let it slip by and be legal which would make a law suit a waste of time.

You know what it is I think , maybe you dont want to say it though ?

I'll say it.

The reason there is so much gnashing of teeth over the Sanremu/Sebenza vs Schrade/Buck thing is for because the Sebenzistas take everything and anything about those knives personally , those knives are beyond criticism , they rest on such high laurels that only the elite and most kingly of us can afford to own one. It's like the folks that drive those shmancy European cars that think they are a little better than the rest of us who drive Toyotas and Fords.
( I'm being a little tongue in cheek here , bear with me ).
In the end it is just a few pieces of metal engineered a little nicer than the rest , that doesn't necessarily make it any better at doing what every knife does to some degree ( cutting things ).
for instance would there be the same outrage , the same righteous indignation
if the knife in question that was 'copied' was say a... Gerber ? or a Cold Steel ? or some other brand that is not as popular and trendy ? I mean dear God in Heaven imagine if they woulda copied a ... gasp !! Strider !:eek:

Well I'm done rambling , my coffee is ready and Seinfeld is almost on , oh by the way I'm drinking coffe made from my "not so French press since it's made in China" watching TV on my Toshiba bigscreen made in China :D Maybe i'll top it off by odering some Kung Pao chicken tonight from China Kitchen down the street...

that may be part of it.

but you clearly lack the historical perspective to remember cold steel did in fact market and sell a strider knockoff. that did not go over well here, and strider is not a terribly popular brand on bfc.

sogs knockoffs of the spydercos is still an ongoing issue in the sog forum.

whenever a knock off is brought to the attention of the membership, the reaction is generally the same. it hasn't mattered if its a tom brown tracker or a sebenza. the reason the sebenza threads go so long is that it is probably the most popular folder here, or at least in the top 5. more people have them, therefore more people will have opinions in threads about them.

seems pretty straightforward to me.

Ironically, the one thing that you mention as Chinese really isn't and that would be, the Chinese food! The reality is that North American Chinese food has been modified to suit Western taste and is quite different from the real deal.

Tostig you may have something but I don't consider the Sebenza owners to be any more or less loyal than Emerson fans, or Strider or Kershaw or Spyderco. When their favorite brand is threatened they respond pretty much the same across the board or so it seems.

Personally I've felt for the last few years that China has been holding out on us. The reason I say that is because I've seen some of the folders done for USA companies for sale here and know what they have been going for as well as who has been using these China based companies. Over that time I've also gotten to know a neighbor of mine who up until this summer traveled all over the Asian countries for his job. He spent a great deal of time in China and always came back with these super super nice knives. He is a knife nut too and he and I hit it off from the moment he moved in our neighborhood about five years ago. Some of the Automatic knives he has bought over there for pennies really, are absolutely phenomenal not just for the money he paid either. These are highly refined, very well finished high quality knives! World class all the way! Top notch mastodon ivory handle scales, black lip pearl inlays, sanbar stag or something very much like it and bone done up quite nice. I'm not sure who makes these or what parts of the orient he was in but I do know a nice knife when I see one and these are top shelf. The idea that China is cheap doesn't really tell it all I don't think.

Dick, my neighbor could take a picture of a pair of boots he saw in a catalog here and stick that pic in his wallet for when he got there. A picture! And all they had to go on was that one dimensional pic of something he saw that he liked and he could let them take his size whether it was shoes or boots or whatever, come back next time he was in the area and they'd have a custom made pair of shoes or boots waiting for him that looked like that in the pic. Things that would cost quite a bit of money here needless to say. He has pants, shirts, hats, and knives all done similar to this based on where he traveled and not just China but Korea also. They really are some seriously good craftsman over there. I've seen their work and its better than much of what we've been exposed to. Maybe Sanrenmu is just the tip of the ice berg.

Too bad the Bradley Alias isn't $10! I'd buy one of these for kicks to check out the supposed quality but I can't wait 6 weeks for it and I heard that somebody got their credit card number heisted and used after buying one. (read it in a thread here anyway)

i ordered a sanrenmu 710 from a dealer in china from ebay on friday, on monday my bank told me my account has been frozen as someone has tried to make unauthorized purchases with it :(

That happened to me the first time I bought from there as well. I bet it was the same dealer I bought from. Does he currently have like 432 or so positive feed back?

you know i think im wrong, the guy i bought from is in Spain i think. his profile lists both hong kong and spain, not sure. his score is 1277 with 100% positive feedback. the person trying to use my credit card may not even be this person, it could be someone totally different, but i thought it was odd that i encountered the same problem after i ordered the sanrenmu from someone overseas.

It is odd. I had the same coincidence happen to me though. A day or so after buying three 710s my bank called me to inform me that someone was trying to use my card to fly from China (HongKong) to Russia or something like that. I'd have listen to the message again to get it all but that was the jist of it. Had it gone through they'd have gotten me for a thousand bucks! As it was they snuck in a Apple mobile me, and people finder fee for two small transactions and when those went through they tried something bigger which threw up red flags. In the end I didn't have to pay for any of it and just got a new card number issued.

I agree totally. I just recently got a Bee L06 (along with a Ganzo and a few Sanrenmu's) and, as you say, the fit and finish is very very good. It's really a very high quality product for the low price.

Holy moly, Bee seems to be confident enough to do original designs! Their L01 folder has a unique Japanese tanto point as opposed to the run-of-the-mill American tanto. When they use their own design, what else can we criticize on?

Now that's a scary thought! Inexpensive, yet decent quality knives from China with nothing to criticize. I'm sure we'll find something. :p

Did you guys miss the part about my post being a little tongue in cheek ? :D

great knife for the price. Similiar build of knife to a byrd.

if your on a budget and not a snob , this knife would serve you well. They have some kinda bronze washer thing going on too.

sure the design is derivetive but how many companies copied the buck 110 ?

I got mine from ebay , shipping was about a week.
Same here, $8 plus shipping and quick delivery.

yeah a similar thing happened to me, they made a 1 dollar charge on my credit card, and then attempted something larger which froze the account. i have made many purchases on ebay, never had a problem like this. dont buy from people overseas i guess.

I think you're right. A country possessing high enough technology to launch satellites into orbit and manufacture iPhones surely can make something as mundane as knives. The only thing stopping them from selling directly to continental U.S. is their inability to market their goods here. That's where U.S. companies come in. If Taylor Brand is smart, they'll start hooking up with these companies making Sanrenmu and Bee knives and slap an American-sounding name on their products. The knives are still a decent deal at 200% markup.

Question about the fraud: did you guys pay these hong kong sellers with credit card instead of Paypal?

I got my SRM from local bookstore but recently decided to go by eBay as some models I wanted were not available. Since I didn't have PayPal, I asked a friend to order. So far, no fraud or anything on his PayPal/Credit card. Purchased from that seller with nick sanrenmu.knife at eBay ..

2nd info: the GB-763 is G10 with minimum steel liners to hold the important parts. As a a result, it's very light ;)

It's really amazed me that 4 pages going still no one mentioned to do a real test with those cheapo knives. Are those things as good as the Tenacious which is supposed to be made of the same steel? Not "surgical stainless" crap or even pot steel?
