Saw a stranger with a sebenza and said hi

I have noticed many knives on others, but always thought it would be odd to ask them about it (assuming I didn't know them).

I have had people ask about mine, I usually hand it over with no description other than to say it's my knife. Occasionally someone will remark about a "really nice" knife they have (usually something in the 20-50 dollar range, which actually is a nice knife in my opinion, but their tone is as if to proclaim it is superior to my knife (generally they assume it is some lesser knife based on the lack of brash logos and such).

Occasionally a conversation ensues, but usually not.
Careful with that elitist tone. ;)

I have an hour long commute on BART every morning and evening so I do a lot of watch and knife hunting.

Never seen a CRK in the wild unfortunately. Most interesting thing I've seen there are Benchmade, Kershaw and Spyderco but I never strike up a convo as it's kind of a BART faux pas, although I definitely would for a CRK or other cognoscenti knife.

Saw a Hinderer once but that was on an employee at the TAD store so it doesn't count.

Had one guy ask about my CRK clip once but I was in a hurry that day so only stopped a moment.

Watch hunting is another story altogether though! You'd think guys sporting AP, JLC, Rolex etc. wouldn't be too common on the subway but I see at least two Omega/Rolex a day and frequently see Cartier, Hublot and JLC. Even saw a Nautilus once and an ALS that I otherwise didn't recognize.

Just keeping in lockstep with the theme of the day over in the tire fire of BF known as General.

I'm just kidding. My extremely dry sense of humor does not come across well in text. :)

Ok. I have not been in General since early this morning. I see my post from then has made it to page three...guess there has been some traffic today? Thanks for the heads up :)

Tell me about it:rolleyes:

Been battling in there since this morning. Couple of dudes seem to think we're all elitists.

I have not sensed an "elitist" vibe in the CRK forum, I use a $25.00 phone and wear a $50.00 watch, we just appreciate a fine product.

Don't wear a watch and drive a truck from last century with 210k on it and will till the wheels literally fall off.

Don't worry, these exact same people are on the gun forums telling me my Glock isn't worth a damn compared to their Ed Brown or Wilson Combat. Nope, never any elitism on gun forums...but a knife, oh a knife, well now you've gone too far! says these same people.

Yup, it's funny how much of a double standard there is when it comes to hobbies. It's almost like saying "the hobbies I hold to be most important are the ones in which elitism is ok and won't be labelled by that term, but in the "lesser" ones it's stupid because they aren't important or relevant enough to have anyone be elitist about"

The question that I've never had answered in the time I spent lurking here, watching YouTube, reading other forums, etc is why CRK that draws the ire of others and cries of elitism?

William Henry, Hinderer, Strider, Shirogorov especially, customs from various makers...crickets.

I've just always wondered that and never have read a clear cut answer. Does anyone know?

I was at the check out at CVS and the check out guy asked me if i was carrying a sebenza in my pocket. so i Stopped and yes , yes it is. Then he went on to tell me he was carrying a Sydeco...It made me feel "special" which is not why i carry my sebenza. I carry it because i like it. But it felt good that someone noticed my sebenza

No doubt it's the popularity. EVERYONE knows the sebenza, whereas not so many know about shirogorovs and William Henry's.

It's also their placement in the knife world. CRKs are riiight in the sweet spot that's open to debate over value. They aren't 1000 plus knives like shiros , but they also aren't spydies or ZTs that typically stay around the 100-300 mark.

Haters will always emerge if a certain product recieves too much positive attention and accolades. It's very much like the idea behind the counter culture or hipster movements. "If EVERYONE likes something, them I'm not going to! Why? Uhhhhh.....because.....because.....REASONS! Yall are just a bunch of elitists anyway!"

Cool! Only true knife knuts will be able to both recognize a sebenza clipped in pocket and have the balls to say something about it in public :D

Whereabouts are you? Not many people here in SoCal seem to be interested in knives. I've never had someone come up to me and ask about my knife, even when I used to pocket carry.

I had a guy at work ask about my flashlight, which led him to asking me if I was into knives. Of course I had my sebenza that day, and he showed me his delica.

It was funny though, because he was one of those guys that didn't realize a lot of people actually carry and use their Sebenza's. He kept saying things like "what if you lost it", "what if it broke", etc. He acted like I carried a Fabergé Egg to work

Ironically, that was my first time seeing a delica:D

In rural North Cal everybody seems to carry and nobody cares what the other guy got in his pocket.
I've even seen a few guys carrying folders when dropping their kids to school where technically no knives are allowed.
One guy even had one clipped in his pocket while assisting his toddler in a gym class with other toddlers and mommies around.
Never seen a fixed blade being carried.
Still, great place knife tolerance wise.
:D
