Scrap Yard 511 (SYKCO 511) - did you get one?

I don't find it too hard to sharpen at all :) I use a sharpmaker for most of my knives and straight up sandpaper over my hand to touch up others... Same for my esee knives and the handful of customs that are 1095.

Edit: I don't find any of the current bussekin steels (infi, sr101, s77) to be difficult to sharpen actually, I do use diamond sticks tho from time to time

Put my order in yesterday. I will pick up my Scrapivore today, or Monday. I am new to the Scrap Yard Swamp Rat scene.

Placed my order over 1 week ago. Haven't heard anything of them by now - even though I sent them an email asking if everything was ok - except for an confirmation email after the purchase. I'm a little bit confused because my RMD was shipped 2 days after I ordered it - i know Swamp Rat isn't part of Scrapyard Knives but I expected the same costumer service.
Should I be worried?

Don`t worry sometimes it may take two months before you hear anything back , thats just the way it is.

Also RMD's are actually in stock. The Kin take orders and then make the knives in batches so as not to have tons of extra blades and minimize on waste ect. So the Rucki,511, and currently the Basic 6 are on preorder, then the knives will be made and then shipped. Sometimes a batch is done in 2 weeks and like the Basic 6 8-12 weeks.

No doubt but there was no information about a waiting period at the shop-website...If you are right how is the customer supposed to know that the 511 knives are not in stock? Did I miss something? BTW: Preorder is something different and usually marked as such.

Why don't they list them as preorder? That's frustrating to find out, especially since they don't mention it anywhere.

Got 1 ordered even though I'm waiting for the 911. I can't barely buy a decent pocket knife for that kind of money. To good to pass up. Thanks Dan!!

Just measured my RMD against the 511 specs and it looks to be identical. The 511 just might fit an RMD sheath
Could change my mind on trying out a res-c "RMD"

What do you guys think? Interchangeable sheaths?

If the sheath is the only thing holding you back. I can hook you up with a sheath for a great price. Just let me know.

Well that's how they have been doing it for awhile. Back before 06 I think it was The yard did do in stock sales but once the knives in stock sold out usually in a week or so they were never made again. Now pretty much everyone gets a shot at a blade they leave the preorders up for awhile then close them.

Here is the way ordering works. Hope I am helping you guys out. And I am pretty darn sure it will be worth the wait.
On 2008-09-24 Dumpster Dan made a major change to the way you can buy knives at the Yard (http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Knives&Number=213988). Scrap Yard Knives will now take orders on 1 or 2 models for approx. 4-6 weeks (depending on the model) and will then discontinue that offer. NO additional orders will be accepted until those models come back around in the model rotation. It could be 2 to 3 years before those models are made available again. This approach allows the customer a better chance of getting in on a model offering while allowing us to batch process or group build knives. This, in turn, assists us in keeping a lower cost of production, while ensuring high quality bladeware and the high performance that has become the hallmark of Scrap Yard Knives.

So get on over to http://shop.scrapyardknives.com/main.sc and get your fill of Scrap Yard goodness!

For those curious here is the old process:
The way Scrap Yard Works is as follows. Dan announces a new blade & then later on announces the release date. A batch of blades are manufactured and made available on the release date. Once they are sold out, we sit back and wait for the next release. Your best bet is to visit the forum once in a while to check and see when the next blade is due to be released. You want to be around at the release time as Scrap Yard blades have a history of selling out at a high rate of speed.

So basically no one is going to get these knives until around October? I don't understand why that isn't listed on the ordering page. They didn't list that it was a pre-order anywhere that I could see on the knife's description or during the checkout process. This was my first purchase from Scrapyard Knives and it's likely to be my last because I don't like supporting companies that are outright deceitful or at the least too lazy to put up a proper description. It's possible I missed that crucial piece of information somewhere, but I think I read everything fairly carefully.

I feel the same way but before upsetting the apple cart for no reason I just contacted Renee about that. I'm going to wait with my judgment until i receive her response. Maybe it's just a rumor and the knives are going to be in the mail soon.

It's not that I'm impatient but I need this knife (or a decent substitute) until a definite time. That's why I'm worried.

For the price I was sure to snatch a few :) one to satin, one for sheath making, one to beat on and a few for gifts! Looks to be one practical knife, I'm sure I will end up dressing lots of deer with her!

Yep, this has got to be one of the most (if not the most) practical offerings to skate away from Dan's kiln. While not as wildly popular as the ten inch 'chopper' beasts, the diminutive 511 will find a quiet place in our survival kits but get pulled out on all the camping and hunting excursions. It is just hard to beat a knife for all-round use of that size and shape. You will be sorry if you did not acquire one of these...at least the addict in you will be lamenting till the cows come home! And no, I don't like anything about the waiting game or the business model employed. The Busse clan does things in their own exceedingly odd and somewhat annoying way, but once you get past all the hoops, the knives are top shelf and probably worth the hassle in the grand scheme of things. Or are they? More food for thought at a later juncture. Either way, we are seriously enmeshed in talking about it.

Dan posted on the Scrap Yard forum that it would be soon...he posted that on 7/29. I think it will be before October.

The staff told me that the knife could ship anytime between 4-16 weeks. For me that pretty much sucks because it probably won't be there in time. A heads up would have been nice! Probably the last time I did business with them.
