Sebenza 1st timer- for anyone else thinking about it here were some surprises

When I used the adjective "fashion", I was using it more broadly in that I think it includes things like status, prestige, etc., not how a knife is decorated. A Rolex is all those things too. But not to everyone! I wear one of mine most days and even though fans like to think of the sports models as "tool" watches, most don't wear a $5-20k watch to do chores; they slip on their Casio or Timex. For me, with the CRK knives, they are simply too expensive to use hard. If that's not an issue for some of you, cool. I just couldn't do it and that's really why I don't own one.

My $900 phone is a tool, my old Jeep that has thousands of hours worth of work and just under $35,000 dollars in parts is a tool. I wear $400 Lowa boots every day are they not tools? We all have our things I’ve dug holes with my Sebenza, I’ve broken my Jeep, I’ve done 20 hour days in my boots, and I’d have no problem wearing a SS Rolex every day.

We all have priorities and goals a Sebenza is not yours and that’s great but state your opinion and move on, I’m not a big fan of ZT so I don’t have multiple posts in ZT threads talking about why I don’t care for ZT

I started carrying a knife when I was 10 years old, a Buck 303 to be precise. I carried one everyday for 30 years before I learned of the awesomeness that is the pocket clipped one hand opening knife and at that point I carried a Buck 303 and whatever else I thought was great at the time. It’s been Emerson, Benchmade, Kershaw, CRKT, AlMar Buck etc. but always with my trusty 303. Then I bought my first Sebenza and couldn’t believe the quality and I was hooked but just couldn’t justify the cost so I sold it. Went back to cheaper fare and did fine but always thought about the sebbie. Went thru some other name brands bought right so the price was ok but it just wasn’t the same.
Ran thru several CRK till I found the right one and now it’s all I use or carry...as for my trusty 303 I’ll keep one my wife bought me but I’ll only end up with that one all the rest are for sale and when it’s all said and done it will only be the Sebenza that leaves the dresser

My Sebenza was frustratingly stiff and butter knife sharp when I received BNIB from authorized dealer.

I’ve experienced several Ti framelocks that were better than the Sebenza imo. The only reason I still have my Sebenza is bc of the lefty option. The Pro Tech Tr3 was everything I hoped the Sebenza would be, but it went out of its way to prevent lefty use.

Though I don't have a CRK yet, (was going to get a 31 but after reading some on here may jump on a remaining 21) how many people are posting from a smart phone? Good luck getting anything current for the price of a Sebenza and then in 3 years it will be in the trash. At least when you buy a knife it won't be obsolete before you know it.

Common statements from folks who don't like a CRK:
"I've handled a few..."
"A friend of mine has some..."
"Too expensive to use..."
"I returned it shortly after receiving..."

Common statements from folks who like a CRK:
"Always in my pocket..."
"I bought another..."
"I've used that Sebbie for 20 years..."
"It's my most valuable tool..."

Statements NEVER heard from either side:
"I used that damn, crappy Sebenza for 30 years and then I finally found a SanRenMu..."

I know I'm taking liberties here, but it's to raise a point. There are folks who legitimately like and legitimately dislike a CRK. I don't think you can ever know either way without actually using one.

The same holds true for almost any tool. If a CRK is too expensive for you to imagine using, that's fine and dandy. That doesn't mean you have a valid experience set with that tool. You only have a valid opinion concerning cost of use.

I wouldn't wear a Rolex. My Citizen Eco Drive is right in my comfort zone for an EDC watch. I'd never think I had a valid opinion on a Rolex in its role as a timekeeping tool, however. The only opinion that I can have is that the Rolex exceeds my comfort zone for a timekeeping tool. That's it. Fini.

Stupid pointy thumbstuds. Otherwise, great knives.

My right thumb looks like that after cutting the end off when I was 16, that silly pointy thumb stud is just bad. CRK didn't want anything to do with my knife until I showed them a picture of my thumb and told them who replaced the thumb stud.

I just received my first Sebenza the other day (a small insigno with micarta inlays, double lug, and blue hardware) and I honestly couldn't be more pleased with it. I was very concerned before I received it that I would be underwhelmed because of all the build-up from the hype around it (I'm looking at you TRM Neutron), but that wasn't the case at all. I prefer a 2.75" - 3.25" blade and this fits the bill perfect! The blade shape is among my favorites (second only to the wharncliffe) and the handle fills my (admittedly small) hands very well. The fit and finish and overall quality is just phenomenal. The only negative surprise I've had is that the lanyard tube rattles which is annoying but it looks too good to remove, so I'll deal with it, lol.

Gosh, I'm really sorry I don't meet your standards on what and where to post. I suggest you do what I just did to you - put me on ignore.

So you have nothing to say outside of your first post..let me sum them up..CRK is a joke to folks from Idaho and I won't carry a CRK since it's not what I look for in a knife. Did I miss anything?

Not to put myself into this, but i do have to say that i highly doubt people in Idaho look down on CRK. Maybe a few of his friends that think its too expensive, which is a fair point, but i dont think any actual knife guy or company can look down on what CRK is.

I don't either. We're all proud of his success!

Here's my thing in general we all have the thing we don't like and we all want to hear what you like don't like and why. If you don't want to buy a CRK because the steel is sub-par, the thumb stud is crappy, it's far to much money for what you get I'm OK with all that and they're all very defensible positions but post it and let it go. I have an XM24 while it's a fine knife it's just not as tough in any measure as my Cold Steel AD10 but I don't walk into every Hinderer thread and talk about how I don't think it's as good as my AD10 and I own both. If someone starts a thread wanting a hard use folder I'll sing the praises of Cold Steel since they are in my opinion the best brand to buy if hard use is your thing but I'm not going to talk about how Hinderer is bad because Cold Steel is better. My Endura is pretty awesome, My CQC 15 is a ton of fun, my GEC's and Böker's are great, and I've already talked about my XM24 and AD10. If I had to keep only one knife it'd be my 21, if only two folders it'd be my AD10 and Sebenza, If one folder and a fixed it's be my Sebenza and my Nayala. The key part of all those sentences is MY I'm not judging any "on paper" I own and have used all of them.

I also doubt that people in Idaho look down on CRK or at least I hope not since it and Alaska are the place I want to move to and establish a residence in. I really want to head back and build a house and establish a residence

This whole thread would be moot if the OP had just started with an Umnumzaan.;)

I’m only slightly kidding. The ‘Zaan was my first CRK and I’m honestly not sure I’d like the brand as much if I’d started with something different.
