Sebenza 31 Lock Rock?!

Eugene Kwon had a good video on YouTube basically showing how the lock rock is not a defect in the knife, it is just the ceramic detent ball that engages the tang of the blade, will allow a bit of flex. This is the same exact feature on the zaan, and many people classify that as CRK's most hard use knife.

yes, that is what has come from CRK.

That it’s normal for this type of lock. But the variability is huge amongst different 31’s.

People are posting two things from CRK. Let's not forget that Tim said the 31 may need some tweaking with regard to the blade movement.

No! We must beat the issue to death with no input from the manufacturer :)
I honestly cannot remember the last time CRK made a contribution here. I think it’s against their policy, and maybe rightfully so.

In my foggy memories there was one post back when I first became active here. That seems a long time ago.

Ironically, it was news of the 31 that rekindled my interest in this site. I hope my return to posting has not worn out my welcome.

I think my post was poorly written. I did not mean that they would post here. It’s probably threads like this that cause them to keep their distance.

I was sarcastically saying that we just should continue to beat the issue to death without listening to input or waiting for further input from the manufacturer...or better yet, creating our own theories.

I think a lot of your input on this issue has been good. By the way, go buy a 31 (if you haven’t already). You will love it.

Yeah for sure. Forums are a beast unto themselves. Still it would be nice if they dropped the odd nugget here. I can imagine a well crafted response might help sooth fears. At the same time, if they are adverse to social media, who can blame them?

I plan on it. Natural Micarta Large Insingo 31. That’s my dreamboat right now. Not available yet of course.

If I wait long enough I can be here for the “S45 sucks!” thread. ;):D

You’re always welcome! :D

They sure don’t keep their distance on IG. :/

Your post to me is curious...as this is a knife forum, with collectors, users, and tinkering/knifemaking minds...I would assume that discussing knives, models, and knife companies would be welcome.
The issue does not need “beat to death” but it is an issue, and some of us cant help but to find a solution. It’s just how our minds work.

I guess I just do not view the 33 pages on this topic as constructive attempts to find a solution. Don’t get me wrong, some of the comments have been excellent with great points but there’s only so far this can go. “We” will not develop a solution to this. If CRK decides the issue needs to be addressed further, they will. And many people here are wondering if there is actually a problem to be solved? There is a large part of me that still thinks people are discussing an issue that arises when the tool is used incorrectly. It’s like complaining that a car sinks when you drive it into a lake.

But maybe I have been locked up in my house too long and I am getting grouchy

Its more like a car that clunks into gear slightly...still drives fine.
But that gear shift should be smooth on an expensive car.

I do not see the comparison. The action on the 31 is smooth. The lockup is fine. No lock failures have been reported (to my knowledge) that have anything to do with this "lock flex" characteristic (a characteristic that is seen on many other frame lock knives. The model has been in the hands of users for over a year now and increasing every day. I have three of them and a 31 is in my pocket about 50% of the time. I have never felt like the knife was unsafe. If I thought there was an issue, I'd have no problem in saying so.

As for a CRK response, I have seen Tim Reeve discuss it in at least two videos. Was information straight form the source not good enough? I'd also bet you money that if you emailed or called them, they would happily discuss the topic with you personally.

As someone who owns CRK knives and am actively looking to purchase a 31, I find the topic relevant.
Purchase that 31, I think you will be happy. I am looking forward to purchasing my fourth when CRK has it ready. Check out some of the CRK related facebook groups too. There are a lot of 31 owners & users that can give you feedback based on actual ownership.

Glad you are happy...i have a large micarta 31 with slight side/side play that crk will most likely warranty if you are interested.
Locks up to your perfection.

CRK related FB groups?! Really? Its gonna read like your responses...

Hi! I’m a CRK fanboi, CRK cant do anything wrong. If you find something wrong with their knives, please dont post about said issue, but contact CRK directly, so they can sweep it under the rug secretly and tell others its normal.

Lock play (up/down) with slight pressure is ridiculous, and shouldnt be tolerated. Don’t care what company is making the knife.

Lots of people complain about lockback up/down play, but the lock is solid. Bladeplay in my books is for 25 year old used knives. Not outta the box CRK’s.

Since this is a corporate forum, you'd think 33 pages of discussion about a feature of a new model would generate a response from a company "with the best customer service in the industry." Even if the response was just a link to some other social media site. However CRK gave up engaging customers on this forum a long time ago. Chris' posts used to be a delight, a real reason to come here. They first put a sock in Chris' mouth (2012 was his last post) and then they hid him in a closet. The last time the corporate poster, Chris Reeve Knives, participated was in 2016.
