Separating maker from knife

Benchmade had a debacle some years back when they cut up a bunch of guns for the police. Turned out they/some of them within the organization were donating to anti 2a politicians and organizations. Still the same management. I've been in several gun shops that stopped carrying them for this reason.
Well that makes me mad. It's bad enough politicians pander for votes, these scumbags are pandering for future political support, which they will never get. Yep, I don't think I'll ever buy a new Benchmade again. I bought a 940 new, paid too much at Bass Pro to support the brick & mortar.

Bought a nice Griptilian, Mini Grip, Bugout and Arcane all used. Like them all, but have lost a lot of respect for them.

It's a shame, really. Their designers are good, but with short-sighted management, they don't have a good outluck.

You can't really separate a knife from the maker.

The good news is there are so many other makers who're honest that make equal or better knives. That leaves no reason trying to justify a Strider or a Dalton.

The way I see it, when you have someone who's consistently dishonest and treats their suppliers, distributers, etc unfairly, why would you think they'd treat the customer any better? They're always the types of people who have unjustified high prices simply because they can.

I have to say, though, I don't understand the Benchmade controversy. They helped cut up some guns that were slated to be destroyed, likely due to removed serial numbers or other issues. It's not like the guns would have been released if they hadn't helped destroyed them, so Benchmade's role did nothing to negatively impact any gun owners. And there isn't any evidence that these guns came from an unconstitutional seizure, either. It seems like kind of an overemotional reaction to me. One company that I do refuse to buy from, though, is Ruger. The magazine limits that Bill supported are still enforced in my state, and I will continue to despise Ruger unless they somehow get that repealed.

Can’t agree more.
I have a shitload of Spydies……….Sal.
Pro Techs………Dave.
Started scooping up Chapmans………Ross.
Good dudes that make great knives.

Say, Matt, be a good guy and send me one of yours...

☺️

I have gotten more polarized in my thinking lately and definitely try my best to avoid products or content that doesn't align with my ideological mindset. This seems to get harder and harder, as years go by, as it seems more and more my ideological mindset is less and less reciprocated by the populace. In any event, I have been known to boycott movies, recording artists, and companies even if I like their product/content just because of what they support or where they are made. In some respects, it's not always possible, especially in terms of origin of manufacturer, but when it comes to entertainment or trinkets, I look long and hard on how I spend my hard earned disposable income.

I, too, avoid patronizing ignorant, obnoxious imbeciles of the Dunning-Kruger variety.

I steer clear of stuff made by shitbirds. If enough people stop supporting shitbirds they dry up and blow away.

That said, I do have a rogues gallery of two blades. One made by Allan Blade and one by Newt Livesay. My ol lady gave me the AB MEUK as an Anniversary gift many years ago. My brother gave me the Livesay knife.

I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of either one, nor would I want to. The people who gave them to me knew I’d love them. The knives are damn fine and stand on their own merits regardless of the hands that made them.

So…..? 🤷‍♂️ I dunno.

I figure if I can't look the maker in the eye and shake his hand without wanting to reach over n slap him upside the head and ask him WTH he was thinking ... I don't wanna buy his product. To many good products out there to be buying something I wouldn't be proud to own.

It's pretty simple people ... don't be a dick. That's a fairly low bar to rise above ... yet some struggle.

I’ve never understood how someone could overlook the individual behind the product.

Paying for something made by someone that is scum is directly supporting scum.

End of stop.

I’ll take my position one step further - I deem people that DO support scum as lacking integrity. You really can’t have it any other way. I may overlook political disparities, as they aren’t always a moral judgment, but theft, lying, impostering, etc… this is all wrong on anyone’s scale.

It‘s a simple rule, really. “Always do the right thing, even when no one is looking.”

I won't buy a knife from a person or company I can't respect.

If I find out after the fact, I rid my collection of that maker's work.

This has always been my policy...and always will be.
I cannot agree more with the above statements.

I refuse to support asshat makers and companies when there are so many good ones out there.

I refuse to have knives in my collection that I am not proud to own, and I consider most of the makers I support close and cherished friends.

Matt your body part description is incorrect, you are more like a pancreas. Nobody knows what the effing hell it does but apparently you can't live without it!.............. ;) 🤣

Sometimes a bit confusing...

Chinese knives...bad
Russian knives...still good and bought freely

🤔

As much as you hate all these scum bags, if you buy any knives from Chinese makers you are supporting things much worse.

Awesome, my friend. At some point, we need to catch up - I’m sure it’s true for you as well, but life has been chaos.
Timely posting of Dad’s knife, as yesterday was the anniversary of his passing.

A few years back I used to buy Schrade SCHF fixed blades to beat around on and give away.

They had Brian Griffen as a designer, but treated him very poorly and did not follow through on terms.

Now I do not buy or entertain the idea of supporting the brand.

A shame really, as they used to be a long-standing and decent quality USA maker, but now are owned by Taylor Brands LLC and produced in China.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Excellent timing indeed. 🙏

I look forward to a catch up bud.;)

Its a bit hypocritical don't you think? Literally every person & company you've ever known, heard of, or interacted with has at least a few qualities or opinions I'm sure you would find disagreeable, to varying degrees.
You think the people behind those dozens or corporations you buy from or give business to on a weekly basis are all saints? Get real.

But, I suppose this doesn't count, because boycotting big corporations that cheaply and conveniently provide essential goods & services isn't very convenient. So; only if its a small company that provides non-essential goods & services do you boycott them? Only if doing so doesn't significantly impact your quality of life or your comfort and security? Interesting.

I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong, just that its hypocritical. Do whatever you like, I cant tell you what to do. If you don't want to support people you don't like, move out into a log cabin in the middle of the forest, then you can have your piece of mind.
