Separating maker from knife

I've seen some online companies go from little guy to family business to industry big boys. Now also online you show me your new ferrari, gucci clothes, designer shades and bags, as a symbol of your success ? Success is measured in the customer comments section. It leaves a bad taste. Success that comes with a peacock wealth display loses my support. If you have to tell me how good you are, you aren't that good. People who brag about wealth, typically aren't or won't be for long.

Earn my business, but work to keep it.

Well said.

I would just replace "but" with "and".

I can't separate the maker from the knives. To the point that I don't have a short list of companies I won't buy from - instead I have a short list of companies I do buy from: Buck (US made models), LT Wright, Leatherman, Spyderco, and Victorinox.

Yes, I own knives of other brands from years back, but if you look at where my money has gone for the last decade, that's the list.

I'm also looking forward to the day when I can add Redmeadow Knives Redmeadow Knives to the list if I ever score a dibs for a Cowbell!

If I give a frank response about Buck (religion) or Benchmade (politics), I expect the thread will be closed.
China and Russia--more politics.
The others listed in the original post, I don't buy from.

Hey that Redmeadow guy sounds shady if you ask me....

I've been prepping some Cowbells so Dibs should be coming soon, as always there'll be a heads up in the Newsletter thread when Dibs are involved

As for the thread topic, if I get the slightest bad vibe from a seller or company I'll walk, period. Aggressive marketing is another thing that turns me off. When it comes to knives, I'll research their process and if something smells funny I'm out. The bold claims are what bother me the most, whenever someone tells me they're the best, first, greatest, toughest it annoys me to no end.

On the other hand if instinct says a company is good people, they'll always have my loyalty.

Hey John!

I agree with you. And I’ll be watching for the Newsletter!!

Can anyone fill me in on the Hoback issues? I took one in on trade and am curious....

Well that's even more disappointing than the uneven grinds! I guess it explains the bath they take on the secondary market.

To me it's a bonus when the owner of the company is a great guy, like with Spyderco. :)

China-made could be argued to be an issue, but there are some knives I have that were made in China because they were good knives.
Good chance the owners of the company would not be people I'd like to hang out with though...

To elaborate further, I wish I had known about the dubious origins of said knives prior to trading a couple reputable knives for it, but I guess we all get burned a little at some point. Better this than to find out my beloved SHF and LG and CRK are bunk!

Its a bit hypocritical don't you think? Literally every person & company you've ever known, heard of, or interacted with has at least a few qualities or opinions I'm sure you would find disagreeable, to varying degrees.
You think the people behind those dozens or corporations you buy from or give business to on a weekly basis are all saints? Get real.

But, I suppose this doesn't count, because boycotting big corporations that cheaply and conveniently provide essential goods & services isn't very convenient. So; only if its a small company that provides non-essential goods & services do you boycott them? Only if doing so doesn't significantly impact your quality of life or your comfort and security? Interesting.

I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong, just that its hypocritical. Do whatever you like, I cant tell you what to do. If you don't want to support people you don't like, move out into a log cabin in the middle of the forest, then you can have your piece of mind.

There are things in life I can control and select, and things I can't.

I need to fill my car with gas and the origin of that gasoline and the people who profit from it makes me feel sick, but I have no choice. The same with many Pharmaceutical companies whose drugs I rely on to live.

However there are things in my life I can control.

I am a knife collector and the hobby is important to me. To me knife collecting is a very personal experience with great input and relationship between me and the maker.
So giving my money to scumbags for what is often sub-standard trash because some online influencer tells me it's quality will never happen. Then when you couple that with lying, stealing, thieving and general larceny........no thanks.

If you feel the above makes me a hypocrite so be it.

Spyderco/Byrd had/have some Chinese lines, I think , and this does not affect how people see their owner.

I don't think that's the point being made here...

...or I missed a turn along the way.

No, this is a valid point. Particularly if you are of a conservative bent. It is not really feasible for conservatives to boycott every company that donates to or promotes causes that we oppose. It's hard for anyone no matter what political views they hold to boycott every company that does unethical things.

But with our free money that we spend on what are in fact luxury goods, we can afford to pick and choose, and there are too many good choices to spend money on dishonest makers.
