...Now I understand why I always miss important things in my life. Because I spend all those minutes on sharpening. Think about it - 2 minutes more this week, another one previous week - in a year I waste about hour on sharpening or entire day in 25 years! I can spend this hour in a year for important thingy in my life. I should buy this wonderful, magnificent, lovely paper wheels and live happy spending all those saved minutes on more important thing in my life!

Thanks, Vassili.

it seems you have too much free time on your hands. but for thoes of us who might want to spend some family time, these wheels cant be beat. here is a picture of a hair i split with a knife i made. you can whittle hairs easily. sometimes just touching the hair can cause it to POP in half. http://mysite.verizon.net/ress6fq6/id34.html

Yes I am not too busy to spend one two or even five minutes to sharpen knife without risk to damage edge or myself etc... This time issue is only matter if you are sharpening number of knives one after another day after day. As I say many times in many way this is not a problem for somebody who do not sharpen knives for living - for me for example.

Thanks, Vassili.

i got another one to hair whittle the one used today was my case full sized sod buster i reprofiled with a 1x30in belt sander with 120 grit belt then went to 220 grit sand paper then went to norton 1000/8000 grit stone the stroped useing brkt compound and these were my results

I really dig this thread, with all listing how they did it, even the paper wheels. I enjoy my time sharpening my knives. I am making a strop right now for white Jewelers rouge, I have made a strop with green compound, and I got shaving sharp, (profiling done on my slippies with a lansky at 20 degrees, and then a micro bevel at 30 prior to stroping) but I have yet to whittle hairs. So I guess I am not scary sharp yet, but, I will be there, thanks to Nozh2002 thread here. I read these threads to put a slope to my learning curve! Keep up the good work!

Factory edge on ZDP189 Endura.

Quite sharp, but the grind didn't cut how I like my knives to cut. So, off with the edge bevel!

:D

Thanks, it's been holding up real well. Once I have some more spare time I'm going to do a VG10 Endura that way and do some head to head comparisons of the two steels.

I was not able to make CPM S110V whittle hair!
Anybody succeed with this? It is like pretty good challenge.

Thanks, Vassili.

Hello Vassili,
I have a question about how the hair is whittled. I am able to whittle hair if I hold both ends of the hair between my thumb/pinky and index/middle fingers. Does this count, or should I be able to whittle hair with holding piece of hair one end only? I just want to know how I rate. I am happy with the sharpness of my knives, and they hold edge very well with polished edge.

If you hold both hands it is easier. For example I was able to whittle hair like this with CPM S110V but it can not whittle one end holded hair.

This is I think how it should be in best case:

Also trick is to whittle it against shells - edge should moves from top to bottom of the hair. Some steels are harder to sharpen to this level because of hrd carbides - CPM S90V (which I manage to whittle hair only after diamond powder with huge amount of vanadium carbides) amd CPM S110V (was not able to whittle even after 50000 mesh diamonds - only once i whittle hair and never able to do this again).

But I think you are welcome to post any sharpening record here.

Thanks, Vassili.

OK! So I post that I am a hair whittler. My Case stockman 6244, Schrade 30T, and Kabar 1187. I am a slippie guy, but also like lockbacks. I have many more to sharpen, and I will try from top to bottom on the hair.
Thanks Vasilli,

CJ

I cut some cable tv wire with my Buck Mayo. It left some slight dings in the S30V blade edge. I roughed them out with a DMT D8XX and then finished on Spyderco Sharpmaker with medium rods. That's all. No CrO stropping needed.
