Sharpening Record Page

I sharpen one of my Bulat knives (from Ivan Kirpichev (Tver)) to whittling hair sharp.

It has huge carbide structures - it is actually property of Bulat to have inside steel some kind of network of iron carbides, something which modern metallurgy getting rid of to make steel as homogeniuse as possible with small grain structures. Bulat is different.

On this picture surface of the blade is in focus so you may see this Bulat pattern.

Point is that Iron carbides here is huge! Much bigger then D2 has and so it is steel possible to sharpen it to hair whittling sharpnes, which mean that carbides is also affected by sharpening and get sharp as well as steel.

Thanks, Vassili.

Finally found the macro setting on my camara and it works better than I thought.

Those three were all sharpened with the DMT magna guide down to the ceramic (7 microns) then stroped with 1 and .5 micron diamond paste. The millie and the TOPS have both been touched-up on a spyderco UF ceramic bench stone the stroped same as before, I need to do a better touch-up on the millie...it's been sharper. I am sharpening a friends knife now completely by hand and if the results are good I'll post it.

Well, this thread is pretty motivational. I'm not the greatest sharpener, but I have a new puukko with a scandinavian grind and a 4000/8000 norton stone coming in the mail, so I'll have to try this out.

Very impressive record from Russian forum guns.ru - in replay to my hair whittling. Antom from Tokyo (Zipangu) show what Mr. Kitano Katsumi Wilderness Shot is capable to:

That sheath is amazing! Defines the words Bullet Proof! Is the knifemaker the sheathmaker as well?

I bet the wife wasnt too happy about him cutting that book towards the sofa. ;)

Alright, just got my stones. After the first sharpening of my life, I got my puukko, a no name with carbon steel from Finland, so whittle a hair under tension. I then went back (after the picture) with the 4000 grit stone (I did a few passes on the 8k to whittle the hair) and got the edge looking more even and such, and now I'm going to go BACK to the 8k and see if I can't get a better whittle.

I got board today and re-sharpened my TOPS folder from start to finish by hand, I think the results are much better.:D

Yes! You defenetely split it more then anybody else to my knowledge. I may whittle twice at same plece, but this is way more!

Thanks, Vassili.

Getting a Sharpmaker with ultra fine rods in 9 days (after I get back from a trip), I'll post again then.

I can whittle with my Busse Combat Fat Fusion Battle Mistress! I stroped it on the loaded strop i use on my straight razors and it whittles with out too much effort. I think i can get it better if i polished the edge better at a high grit and strop again.

You got the right idea, my final stone is usually a spyderco UF ceramic (around 3 microns) then 1.0,.5, and 0.25 micron diamond paste. It makes a big difference when you use finer grits and more of them. Final edge angle does not seem to matter that much its more about the thickness of the steel leading to the edge. The mora above had a 25 degree micro bevel set by the ceramic's then stropped only a few passes on the 1 and .5, finishing with heavy preasure on the .25. The final edge angle is probably 60+ degree's inclusive, just goes to show its more about the structure of the steel and the abrasive you are using.

With some stropping it is not too dificult to whittle hair. A better test is the ability to push cut cigarette paper. A knife that will push cut cigarette paper without catching or ripping will easily whittle hair and you don't end up bald.
