Shave of the day?

I will admit it, I don't have the balls to try using a straight:eek:

I've been shaving with a straight for about a month (more or less). There is a definite learning curve (complete with cuts) but nothing that can't be endured. I find that using a straight puts me into a sort of zen-like period of concentration for the duration of the shave. I've really grown to enjoy my morning ritual, so much so, that it aggravates me when I have to default to my Schick or my Braun electric. If I can do it, and I'm about as coordinated as Steve Martin in "The Geek", anyone can do it. You really should try it.

Now, if I can just figure out how to convince my wife that I really do "need" that bottle of Truefitt & Hill West Indies Lime aftershave... :D

No Picture sorry

Preshave:Hot shower
Brush: Fendrihan Super Badger
Soap: Porarso Cream
Razor: Odd 1929? Canadian Gillette Old meant for new blades
Blade: IP Red
Aftershave: Old Spice Splash

While this Old is easier to load than the other Canadian Ball End I have the blade still twists when snugging things up.

The shave with this Ball End is much better than the other one, smoother yet more aggressive. Did a four pass shave and got as close to a BBS as you can with out actually being there. I think if I had taken the time for a little blade buffing I would have had the closest shave I have ever had.

This razor is a keeper, but the handle has a couple of cracks and the ball end jiggles while shaving. While it doesn't fall out or affect the shave, it is just a little disconserning. I think I may just load up the handle with epoxy to hold the ball end in solid and maybe slow down the cracking.

I would try a straight if I had one but not in the shower. No mirror (eek)

I have shaved with my trailmaster though

Barbasol Pacific Rush? I used to like that stuff, but after using traditional soaps and creams, the smell kind of makes me sick now.

markksr, I'm really digging your photos.

If you don't mind my asking, what rig are you using?

Thank you. I just use a Sony DSC H55 and Gimp for any editing.

Here I thought you has some high end DSLR:o and it turns out you you have the upgraded version of my DSC W120. I guess I have a lot of work to do on my picture taking/editing skills to even get close to the quality of your pictures.

Prop your elbows on the table and use your flash. That should do it.

Not really. Although a tripod can make a huge difference...

Much more importantly, THINK about the shot before you push that button. Is it centered? Is it proportional? Should I adjust something to see it more clearly? To move/remove some bright reflection? What you see on the screen/in the viewfinder is what the camera will capture. Is it what you want it to be?

FWIW, I NEVER use a flash for the shots you see here. Nor do I have a lightbox. These shots are taken on my bathroom counter or floor or sometimes on my bedroom floor. I'm no expert at all, but I have been dabbling with photography for a long time and I have a feel for what certain lighting will produce.

If you look back in my photo album (linked in my signature), most of those shots were taken with a 10 year old Olympus 2.2 megapixel in various places around my house, but mostly on my bedroom floor.

I do have a tripod, and a light box:o so it isn't so much my equipment that is lacking it is definitely my skills. Mind you my lights for the light box are lacking, well missing right now. I am using them in the garage to light my work area at the drill press and grinder. What I really need to do is put some time and effort into taking better pictures, but I still want an entry level DSRL, something like the Canon Rebel XS. Something that I could grow into yet not break the bank to buy.

It makes a huge difference indoors. Indoor lighting is so low that the shutter speed has to be increased for the correct exposure. The longer the shutter is open, the more susceptible it is to the movement of your hands. Whether or not you notice the movement, the camera does, and this is what causes blur.

Putting your elbows on the table or sitting your camera on the table will eliminate a lot of blur. And the flash helps because it will make your camera use a faster shutter speed, although flash lighting isn't always ideal for the photo you might be trying to take.
