How do you like Shavettes compared to straight razors? How about compared to DEs?

Shavettes are an interesting creature. Factory DE blades snapped in half are much sharper than any straight razor and the smaller size with the 2 exposed corners so close together make them pretty unforgiving to the careless, but they do provide a fantastic shave without all the maintenance of a real straight razor.

The one pictured above I picked up just to try out a shavette, and while they will never replace standard straight razors in my rotation, I will be spending the extra money to pick up the all stainless Dovo shavette one of these days. Today's shave was a DFS in 1 pass, that's why I grabbed the shavette.

Compared to a DE, I get less (read none) irritation on my neck with both the shavette and the straight than a DE and this is actually what has driven me back to straights after many years.

PS- For the price of the Shaving Factory Shavette, everyone should try one out. Use the code "BB" at shavingfactory.com for 25% off and it's $6.74 shipped.

Interesting... After months and months of trying to sharpen a straight, I am still unable to get them as sharp as a DE. It makes my ATG passes feel like I'm using sandpaper on my face (although it shaves without weepers or nicks.) Of course, I don't have 16k+ grit stones, but still, this is holding me back from being able to get a good shave with a straight. That's the reason I've been wanting to try a Shavette. I might just pick one up.

Left it three days, that's a maze of growth to get through.....:D

Decided to use Omega Boar as it's stiffer and coarser than the Badgers.

Tried a new approach with lather too: Whipped up extra thick Taylor St.James' cream and used very little water. The resultant lather was exceptionally 'heavy' and dense. This worked a treat on the mass of stubble, certainly fetched it up and made the shave exceptional. I may go with heavier denser lathers from now on (not so easy to achieve with soap though)

New Feather, Merkur 34

Cold water and L'Occitaine Baux after shave soothing gel, really like the smell and effect of this.

Result was the closest shave I've EVER enjoyed, could not feel any stubble anywhere, totally smooth, ultra close and no nicks burns or anything unpleasant. Usually I shave every other day, and three days is pushing it- the unkempt stubble look, but the razor and cream performed magic!

First a hot shower, then whipped up some soap in my cool pawn shop mug with a second hand store brush. After working the firs round of lather into my face a bit with the brush, I whipped up some stiffer lather for a second coat. Stropped my razor a bit first on bare canvas, then bare horsehide. It's an old Genco "Gold Seal" 5/8 straight. Took the sides off with one pass, leaving a goatee. Finished with a splash of cold water and some no-name not-that-great aftershave lotion. I need to get more Bay Rum.

A pretty standard shave, as I've been doing this for about six years. Although, I do believe it's time to go back to my 8000 stone for some touchup on the edge.

All in all, much more satisfying than an electric or (IMO) a safety type razor could ever be.

Been admiring that shaving -mug for a while now. Just the right shape, tapering to the base. Mind if I ask where you got it? I'd like to get one.

Thanks, Will
