SHOT Show 2015

jb, and everyone,

My grey and balding hair must be a outward sign to me that my era is passing (or passed ) by. I find no new knives showing in this thread as attractive. Maybe the leather grip knife if I had no other choices. The new shapes and colors, the new gizmo's are just not my game. I thought I was being a 'modern' guy when I became attached to Vantages. I didn't even like it when the Vantage Forces came out, especially the ones with the holey handles. I guess I will have to say like jb, some of the LEs are likely pretty up close, but holy Bat Man you could buy ten small vantages or 20 309s for what they cost.

I guess I will coast along with you folks, happy to see you happy with the modern looking knives. I guess Buck is just never going to do a jig bone or horn blade pocketknife ever again. Much less a true Warcliff blade. I am starting to stare a little too long at some other companies offerings over in the Traditional forum. I guess I can take some of the 10 or 12 TL - 29s I have an do some re-scaling and blade grinding if I lament for the old ways too much. Enjoy 300Bucks

I actually do own a WBC.

Being 5160 and having removable scales, I think I could turn the red camp knife into something I'd like. Unfortunately nothing I need.
I'd love to have a drop point 110 as well. Otherwise, I have to side with 300 on these.

The discounters may never get some of the low production number new items into their stock in order to expect bargain prices.

What I pay as a BCCI lifer: MSRP x 1/2 + (10% of the 1/2) + shipping. In other words, ten percent over wholesale. Email me if you need details. MSRP is what outsiders or future buyers or Russian oligarchs or someone that I will never meet pay. It is a fiction.

Oregon, do you have any info on a 877 Maverik? I'm disappointed that some of these knives, like the Selkirk will be imported.

King dollar walks the earth like a giant right now making foreign goods bargains. Reap the harvest before it is gone and that day will come soon enough.

Here you go:

They did focus mostly on newer designs this year. One of the reasons I like Buck is they offer a variety of new and traditional designs. Maybe with market analysis, these newer designs are where sales can grow. I'd have to be a fly on the wall in a Buck board room to know for sure. I wonder if we'll see the day when the 300, 500, 100 series of knives will be phased out, but I think new products along these lines will be few and far between.

Are you sure it's imported? The MWG SEAL knife doesn't have a U.S. flag on it but the press release says it is "Proudly made in the USA". The Buck knives that are imported say that. The Selkirk doesn't so it may be that some part is made overseas.

I'm not wowed at all so far. The only one I find maybe sort of appealing is the Apex which looks like an ok EDC for the casual user, but beyond that it's a tall glass of "nope." :o

The Matt Would Be in the catalog does actually have a USA flag in the upper left corner. So it is made in the USA.

The Matt Would Be has a retail of $245.00 while the Selkirk's is $85.00. Also a sure sign the Selkirk is made overseas while the Matt Would Be is made in the USA.

300 Bucks, I'm beginning to see the heart and soul of the old Buck as residing in the custom shop. In this vien, I see a glimmer of hope. They added the 113 last (iirc) and perhaps your dreams would be answered if they put the 301 in the custom shop?

[As an aside, did Buck ever make jigged bone knives or just rebrand Schrade or Camillus made jigged bone knives? I honestly don't know.]

Some other things I would like to see added to the custom shop...
+ A thin line version of the 112 (to compete with the GEC 72)
+ A drop point blade option for the 112.
+ Flat grind option for the 112 and 500 series knives (in the 420HC anyway) and for the 301 if they would add it.

As for their non-traditional knives, I agree with the poster in the General Forum who looked at the new red knives and said that Buck needed a good brand manager. I don't mind Buck making non-traditional knives - not at all. I just wish they could find a way to make them have a "family resemblance" with other knives within each category. Honestly, it looks like "Buck" didn't make any of them and just outsourced them to CRKT or Kerhaw or any other knife make in the world. I don't get that.

One place I really don't get what Buck is doing is with their fixed blades targeted to outdoors users outside of their hunting line up and their survival/Hood line up. Both the traditional (and newer) hunting knives and the Hood knives make sense. But with Bark River doing great and with Mora (there, I said it) doing great, I have to ask why Buck can't produce a reasonable wood knife. I note that the very first Buck fixed blades used a very traditional sabre grind (as did Western, Marbles and Schrade-Walden.

What I would like to see from Buck is a 4" to 5" drop point fixed blade with a sabre grind (aka convexed scandi grind, like Bark River does or like most Moras end up being after a bit) with Buck traditional phenolic black handle with possible other version in wood (for more) or rubberized nylon handles (for less). Instead we get knives like the Endeavor or that red bladed thing with a full tang and hollow grinds. That's makes no sense to me. I don't need a full tang hunting knife (IMO, hollow grinds work for hunting but not for wood) and I don't need or want a hollow ground woods knife.

Buck could very easily produce a woods knife as good as the Bark River Bravo or Aurora and if they can produce the Bucklite Max (hollow ground), they could just as easily produce an American knife to compete with the Moras.

So, you can add that to my wish list for thing to add to the custom shop. Add a few 100 series fixed blades, including a sabre ground drop point. One can dream.

300Bucks and Pinnah, I'm right there with both of you! I'd like to see some nice 301s and 309s with some nice scales. I'd particularly like a little stiffer pull. Pinnah, I agree with you 100%. It would be great to see Buck use some of the profits of there better selling knives to throw us a nice bone. I'd pay a reasonable price. Just add a 301 or 309 to the custom store.

Answer to Pinnahs question..yes, in brown bone and red bone.

Was not wanting to twist a Shot Show thread, (new Buck catalog models), too far out of purpose. Was just commenting for me that many of the new models are not what I expect to be coming from "my" Buck factory. Like I said, era's change, companies try to meet the customers desires. I think I feel my wants slipping away as a minority, an would likely be a natural event. As I said, I will smile and be glad for those who like the modern looking models. I will likely not be able to discuss their use, like many of the past forum members who I never see here anymore, if I wasn't moderator you likely would not see me commenting much....hey, that might be a good thing ...ha 300Bucks.

My understanding is that the 877 pictured will be imported. You might see a Made in the USA variety later this year...
