Here are three beauties by Steve Johnson.

The one on the top is a collaboration with Ron Lake
and the one on the bottom was engraved by the
amazing Firmo Fracassi (Italy).

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

There will be more subhilts being added to my collection in the future. Bowies and subhilts are my favorite types of knives.

Nice Desaulniers there, Keith. I love my narwhal Loveless wilderness, which is no comparison at all to your subhilt. He puts such a great finish on his pieces, love 'em.

These are not mine. But one of them will surely be within the end of the year. Some different sub-hilt designs from european knifemakers, all full integral construction : Karl-Heinz Koob from Germany and Charly Bennica from France :

Thanks for the honorable mention Rob.

Those are some great Sub-hilts everyone.

I am working on a Searles Bowie inspired sub-hilt right now, It's a really cool project.

Thanks for showing everyone.

Russ; love your sub hilts, MS knife is fantastic. Hope to one day have an Andrews sub hilt in my collection!

Kyle; showing your first sub hilt is like walking in public with a supermodel girlfriend. :D Stares, drooling, etc.

Thanks for posting everyone! This is my dream thread!

Sub hilt fighters. I've made a few. Here are four of them.
1. This is my first high end presentation sub hilt, made in 1986. It uses 440c, ivory, and blued steel. It was inspired by some made by Fred Carter, who did the gold inlay for me. It got dropped last year and I had it back for a restoration, which allowed me to take some pictures. I'd made a bunch of "Loveless-ish" types before it with the usual full tapered tangs and soldered guards, but none after.
2. This is a current MLR SHF made for Les Robertson. Materials are CPM154, 416 sst, and ironwood. I believe this one is BillF's.
3. The third knife was a custom order with an unusual set of requests. The customer wanted a knife that incorporated a sub hilt and elements of Persian and Japanese knives. He also wanted his name in the steel. Tom Ferry hammered out the billet with the name spelled in Kanji, and it is right reading on both sides. The rest of the billet is quite complex, with a "flower blossom" pattern around the name panel, and a welded edge that is both damascus and stacked layers of 15n20. The habaki is sterling silver, handle fittings are bronze with the family crest, or mon carved into the front, the handle is ebony, and the pin has a head of sterling carved into a likeness of Mt. Fuji. The hard sheath is wood, and it went to a maki-e artist in Canada.
4. This is the sub hilt I had at Blade, one of my Integral models. The blade is gun blued and you really can't see the pattern well in this image. It's a D. Lisch mosaic billet with a welded on edge. The fittings are blued steel, and the handle is walnut burl. Ray Cover carved his interpretation of a gargoyle onto the guard top in a saddle fashion using punches. Part of the work is left with the punch/hammer marks for texture, and the face itself was polished with stones. The shield shaped finial has a close up of the gargoyle's snarling face. I made the sheath from layers of leather that were carved, then overlaid with calf skin.

I'll have more pictures later. I'm in the middle of photographing a couple this afternoon and will post them when I'm finished.

David

Hi David,

All your designs are exemplary, but the third one above--the Asian-inspired piece--really does it for me. Very unusual knife.

This is truly a Master's Gallery of cutlery. Subhilts alone are an exercise in difficult knifemaking, and so this is why they are a rarity.

I'm lovin' the relook at Steve Rapp's subhilt. I'd forgotton just how special this one was.

My contributions keep coming in. I am glad that they hold up. I'm staying out of this, only because I could clog it up. Let others breath..... :D

Thanks, Coop.

You could at least do some selective clogging!

Here are three subhilts, all three also have D-guards, from the creative mind of Roger Bergh.
