Something a little different. Finally got a sheath with an oak leaf cluster...made by the same artist who made the pendent :) I rescued it from the discard box due to a messed up stitch...but waste not want not :D

Thanks, I do too. It's a sheath Ryan designed for one of his hand-forged knives. It was a happy happenstance running across it laying on a shelf since it matches a pendent he gave me as a Christmas gift about 6 years ago because of my fondness of, and connection with, Oak trees. It's made using the same artwork. I didn't even know he had plans to use it on sheaths, but since he has, I discussed leaving my mid-tech Bushfinger and Kephart with him for a while so he can design dangler sheaths for them with the same graphic and others. I've been wanting a bushcraft sheath made with this tooling for years. I think it would be an awesome sheath for the new Bushfinger I have coming. I had been waiting a long time for the version of the final Bushfinger design that spoke to me, and I want a special sheath for it that is personalized to me.

Looking forward to seeing pictures!!

Was that laser engraved?

Yes, RMJ is an odd mix of automated machines, old school forges, anvils, and power hammers, sewing machines and what have you. That isn't what I really want. I want to have one hand tooled, pretty deeply into heavy weight leather. But sorting that out has proven difficult beyond my ability to either find or afford, or having to send off the pendent, which is one of six, each of a different metal, made from that die before it had an accident. So I won't risk sending it off. Some day I still hope to get it, but for now this is really cool since it's the closest I've gotten in 6 years :)

White Oak specifically, or Red Oak as well?

Depends on what part of the region I'm in. Here it is primarily white oaks, and I am really hoping an old friend survived the fires in Gatlinburg

In Florida it is the old Live Oaks in the swamps

I'm a big fan of the mighty oak as well. I have to find better photos when I get on my computer.

That first one reminds me of one I built a make shift tree house in and practically lived in years ago. Very cool tree. Has a lot of character.

Thought this may be the appropriate place for a little DIY project for my Fiddleback machete sheath. I did not care for the tan leather with the black handle so I started by dying it black to match. Looked great, but still a little plain. During one of my doodling sessions I came up with this design and decided to make a stencil for the sheath, add a little acrylic paint and voilà!

Justen,

Where did you get the bone bead for the lanyard? I've been looking for those, but those that I'm finding are too small.

Nice work Justen. Did you have the sheath made for it? The angle of the mouth nicely matches the angle on the front of the scales.

It looks to me like the sheath that comes with the machete. I stained mine as well, but didn't attempt the extra that Justen did.

A hint on staining that was passed to me by RLO. Soak the sheath completely in a bucket of water. Let the water run off it and then apply the stain - it helps the stain to apply evenly and without streaks. You wind up with that perfect coloration - like Southern Gents!

Oh, and be very careful putting that blade into the sheath. That machete is so damn sharp, if you don't align it correctly you'll either lose a few fingers, or cut right through the sheath. I still have my fingers. The sheath...well it has a real nice cut in it. Just opened it up like a hot knife through butter.
