Show off your Fiddlebacks and Leather

This is going to sound strange, but ahem, my daughter was interested in the background material for this picture. Interesting texture, depth, and detail without taking away from the object on display.

Very nice Justen! I wouldn't mind one with that tooled into it!

Thanks Brian. Tooling would be nice, but I don't have any of the tools and for one project a bottle of dye and paint was more cost effective. Maybe Santa will get me some tools.

Justen,

Where did you get the bone bead for the lanyard? I've been looking for those, but those that I'm finding are too small.

A guy I know makes them and the are not expensive. I have a few extra. Will send you a couple.

Nice work Justen. Did you have the sheath made for it? The angle of the mouth nicely matches the angle on the front of the scales.

The sheath is just the stock one that Fiddleback sends out with the machete.

Um, yeah...for your daughter. They are made from paper and you can find them on etsy. My wife bought some for something she was doing and I confiscated a couple. They work great for a backdrop.

Ambidexterity is a good thing to have when you are but most of your equipment is not :)

And a lot of sheaths [emoji3]

Here's my first sheath... basically copied the look of one of diomedes sheaths (sorry)... the side isn't only for sheaths tho... I have a camera bag in mind too

That is awesome! I am a little jealous. ;)

What did you get and where from??

Wickett and Craig 8oz skirting leather (tho I'm wondering now if 8oz is too thick and should have gotten a 6oz)

You do some nice work. Not just leather but the custom handles/scales/ razors. Very skilled my friend. I hate you [emoji3] (not really).

I had to look twice to see if that was mine. ;).

People will sometimes say to me, don't you worry about showing people how you make sheaths. I always laugh. I know how much that side of leather cost and how much you currently have into that sheath. I am not worried. ;).

Of course if you start selling that pattern, I am going to have to send Guido to break your legs. ;)

Wetform the sheath and I think you will find the 8 ounce breaks in nicely for that size. If you worry about the smaller blades. Take a cut a little lower on the side to get a little more flex.

Thanks for that info. If Jason is willing and creative enough, I probably won't bother making any sheaths, but I do need several different styles for this project, and I do have some really large knives that need sheaths, so maybe a few. But I am going to be making some packs and bags, and needed a source for leather. I have access to the leather shop at RMJ for the tools and machinery, but they use a heavier leather than I need for the packs and bags.

Always helpful! I will try that next time

Thanks I've always been good with my hands. And all my hobbies help me unwind from work ...

Brian - you likely need 4 ounce or so - and Chrome tanned would be fine for bags. Let me know. I have a source.

In regards to sheaths. Let me know. We take care of eachother - I will make you sheaths.

Cool, thanks Jason, I used to make my own sheaths years ago and I would much rather leave that up to you man. I was taught to be self sufficient in most areas, but also taught to know that when it really comes down to it, we all have our own particular trades for reasons. The packs I can't possibly afford to have made however, and I'm really not happy with the quality of the ones I've bought. Fine for short distances and photos and all. But I need a couple I can actually hump some distances to get to the areas I will be working in, and wear them in without them falling apart on me. So...I'll fumble my way through it :) :)

There are a few pics of one I bought and kept in a couple of the "Tolkien" threads, but I'll need to take other pics tomorrow to explain what I like about it, (the design), and what I don't like...really thin leather over canvas, weak straps, and weak strap attachment. Plus the straps are really too small for me. I'm just going for making a couple of packs and something like a small carrier bag to use in the photo project in some of the shots, and to carry the stuff to where I'm shooting. Wanting the leather pliable but not paper thin. I do intend to keep using them over time. I'm done with packs like maxped. I want leather.

I feel the same way... that's why I got into leatherworking in the first place... I feel like my current camera leather bag is indestructible short of submerging it in boiling water

Very nice work Heespharm. Do you sale any of those?

No not really it's just a hobby ... all my friends think I should at least open an Etsy shop but I'm very hesitant ... I don't want it to be stressful at all and don't really need the money... but recently I've been looking for new projects because I've already made all the bags I wanted when I got into it
