With my edc pattern fuz sticks not the best in the world but used a piece of a pallet that was laying around kinda brittle wood not sure what they use to make pallets with in maylasia lol

So I am sure the answer is all 3 but does this take more, skill, wood selection, or a very sharp knife. I can not do this and i am wondering if my knife is not sharp enough.
 
All wonderful knives and pics but I don't see snow on the ground in any one of them. Any tips for a novice trying to practice out in the cold with frozen wood ? The materials act differently than when it's above the freezing point and or sitting in the rec room over a desk.

Never stop playing, experience as much as you can, and try it as many different ways you can, become inventive and keep practicing.
