Show Your Patina, Forced, Earned, or Accidental

This is a very big, and very old all steel Camillus! 4" long - check out the tangstamps. Not used much, it just got old!!

Wow! How old do you estimate this one is? The font on that tang stamp looks to be very old to me. Late 1800's?

The Camillus Collectors forum here says that Camillus was established in 1875.
Bernie Levine says that aging Camillus tang stamps is a mug's game!:D
The style and condition indicate great age to me - it just doesn't look like a modern knife!

Earned but very young.

Can i ask what method this is? When you say "earned" does this mean natural or by some technique? Im not a huge fan of patina'd blades, but these are starting to make me feel different. Everyone feels different, but I do enjoy looking at the more uniform even patinas. Again, thats just me.

And, all these knives are just amazing guys.

New Madison barlow that came in this week. Earned patina, though very early in the process still.

Pure awesome! The sharpening steel is just as cool IMO!

Earned and very old.....................................FES

By earned I mean its not from dipping in hot vinegar or cutting fruit and letting the juices sit for a while. Its not sticking it in a potato over night or cold blue. I have nothing against any of those, I have actually done them all. This one was from legitimate use and keeping it with me everywhere. Wiping patina forming materials off immediately.

That looks like it has a dark history

Yeah, I posted about it in the Fixed-Blades thread, figured it had come from the local prison at first! :D

I'm now more inclined to think someone had it as a fireside knife for splitting wood and suchlike.

Who knows though!

pittina defined:

RUST is not something that grows on steel, and can be removed.
It is something that steel turns into, so REMOVING it leaves voids (pits) in the steel.

Anybody tells you he has some kinda alphabet snake oil that will reverse the rusting process, offer to sell him a valve that will unflush his toilet.

Or a pan that will unscramble an egg.

BRL...

imho, Patina is removable, Pittina is old and beautiful, but not reversible.
