SHTF Gun

The average scumbag will soil his britches when a shell is loaded in a pump shotgun. You dont think so?

I've heard a lot of people say that, but I dont think it's something to depend on. Will the sound of a shell being chambered change most people's behavior? Sure. Is it something to bet the bank on? Nope.

Yeah , I guess. Maybe im not on the same page as you. If the sound doesnt change ones behavoiur, then theres the loaded shotgun ready to be used.

As someone else said- the correct tool depends on the exact job at hand. I always have the Glock 17. Other tools include but are not limited to: LMT AR15 M4 clone, 18: precision AR15, FN SPR A1a, 870 police/Scattergun tech, several 10/22's for substance hunting or CZ452 Scout. It really depends on what I am faced with when the SHTF.

If bugging out by auto and situation unknown- a variety of the above. If on foot and unkown, the CZ 452 Scout. LMT carbine and Glock.

Brian...I too roll my eyes at all of prac crap threads. I also fail to see the fear-inducing capability of a Mossy being racked.

dipbait...good luck with racking the slide as a deterrent against any of the following:

Druggies, armed intruders, average intruders,my grandma, zombeez...without getting killed...again...and I say emphatically,

Dougo, be easy on him. As I said in that thread, even people who are teaching tactical shotgun have bought into that myth and actually pass it on as good advice. It's been a pervasive myth for a long time.

You might get a guy to soil his pants when you rack the slide, but if he's cornered and desperate, he can still counterattack with crap in his pants.

Sorry...when someone is passing on "advice" as "life-saving" and it is actually detrimental or counterintuitive to that end, I feel the need to speak up. Which is why I avoid the "Practical" tac threads on here. Racking a slide is really probably no more frightening than snapping open one of my CRKT's or a switchblade deploying. The shotgun racking logic is just as stupid, and therefore, dangerous as the morons who propose using tapes of dogs barking as an effective anti-theft tool...

It would be silly to use the sound of a shell being chambererd for self defense. I wouldnt do that. But, the sound is there. People recognize it. The sound of helicopters in Bora Bora has never killed an al Queda, but they sure as hell hide when they hear them.

Doug83 , Im not passing advice to use noise to defend oneself, I actually stated that a Remington .870 with 00 buckshot is my weapon of choice.

... and now I an finished with this disscusion.

The scenario that frets me most is not the weapon weilding nut that is charging toward me- that is easy to assess and react to. The one that frets me most is the unarmed person that continues to advance without making their intentions known(assuming we are in a bad situation at the time).... is this a threat that only clarifies when they are in contact range or is this a non threat from a frightened/desperate/ or just confused person. I pray I am never in THAT situation & feel for the Mil/LEO that do have to make that decision.

Dip,
As Doug pointed out-- the reaction depends on the person being threatened with the racking of the slide. It might scare the hell out of me but plenty would appreciate it as a warning so they can react or some may not even register what the sound is(high on whatever)-- or may decide it is a bluff if they are in plain sight.

Really? Because that is pretty much what you said riiiight here:
Remington 870. Double 00 buckshot. Like a post Ive read here before. "Just the sound of chambering a shell is adequate in most situations."

The bold is my emphasis...

Let's not beat a dead horse here, please, gentlemen...we've all taken this thread too off course as it is. My apologies to our original poster.

Me too...sorry to de-rail...Anyway, my answer stands, the gun depends on the situation. If it is an armed intruder in my home that gets past the dogs, my Mossberg will do the job, as will my .20 New England. I live pretty much in a shotgun shack by myself.

If I am dealing with multiple assailants, I would opt for my 1911 or another decent SA.

If, for some reason, I need long range, I will use my .30-06. If I need something in the woods, it's a .30-.30.
