That sounds like a neat idea Silver!!

Someone else can go first, then i can see if they short their motor out by trying to keep it half way between on and off :p :D

One of the things that kept making put off buying the stuff to make knives was the fact im not very mechanically inclined... You see lots of knife makers making their own jigs, adapters, modding machinery to work better etc. Half the time i have no idea what they are talking about. Even when it comes to cars, I know how to change a tire and change the oil on SOME cars..And i know where the alternator, and the radiator fan is... other than that im looking at a bunch of metal and plastic.

Really when it comes to machinery and motors im at a loss. And as far as natural talent, skills, and book smarts go i wasnt born with much of it either... But i was born determined and hard headed, once i get my mind set on something that interest me i dont stop until im satisfied. It may take me a while to figure it out but thats ok by me.

Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Well good thing, because i dont give up.

Silverthorn - I just got as line on a guy who's selling all of his shop equipment and is asking $85 for a Craftsman 2x42. I'll never find another that cheap. I already emailed him asking for pics and when I can go see/buy it.

If the sewing machine peddle works I'll buy you a coke or a beer if you prefer. :D

RK, and WW,

I think if you can find an old sewing machine, you can wire the pedal into its own seperate power plug, then use that to control the speed on the grinder. I have done this kind of mod on a few different machines that I wanted to control the speed or the on and off while my hands were holding something sharp or glowing hot. It may or many not work on that kind of motor. SO what I am saying is, cut a sewing machine pedal off, wire a female power plug to the output side, and plug your grinder into that. Pedal controlled grinder.
Pretty sure you'd end up burning out the motor. I have some experience with this, and there are also articles in the knifemaking section of BF, but the Craftsman has a single phase AC motor - which means that it's meant to run at the speed of the incoming Alternating Current, which is 60hz. Without getting too technical (not that I actually understand it myself) you have to have some way of changing that cycle to slow the motor down. Simple voltage changes won't do it. I'm pretty sure it can be done, but there are some complicated electronics involved.

Here's one of the threads here on BF:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/825406-Can-you-get-variable-speed-from-a-single-phase-motor

I'd be the first one to go ahead and try to build something if I thought I could get it working (I am a master of jury-rigging), but I've done some reading (and I have an unused college degree in EE, so....I know nothing) and it really doesn't seem like it would be worth the trouble. Although I've yet to stop at the electronics surplus house to see if they have a DC motor that would fit the chassis.....mmmm FRaNkeN-GrinDeR! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Franken-Grinder sounds like an adventure worth while. I have very little experience with any kind of electrical shennanigans. the last time I gave it a shot I nearly blew out our breaker box. So, if this is going to be attempted, it will be at my brother's house. He ain't married and has his home owners policy paid up.

I need a brother like that. He doesn't do it now, but it used to be he'd borrow some tool and it would come back broken, burnt or bent. Though he isn't married, he's a little retentive about certain things.....

Anyone watch the new "Gotham" show? i thought it was a pretty good pilot.

Bout to try out the new "scorpion" show and see how it is. super geniuses protect the world from threats huh? we shall see!

The show "Forever" is also on my watch list.

I been enjoying "The Lottery" as well... A show with a topic that hasnt been beat to death is always a welcomed change LOL

Im glad "POI" and The Blacklist is back as well. Ill fit them in soon enough,

and Under the dome has been going down hill but ended the 2nd season off with a pretty big cliff hanger that makes me want season 3 to hurry and get here.

Not sure yet if ill watch "Madam Secretary" if so it will be when i run out of other shows.

On the other hand Z Nation was crap. Total waste of time. I didnt give it a completely fair shake as im not into zombies/vampires/werewolves much but i always give them a shot before i decide i dont like it anyways. It didnt take long for me to turn that off.

And this TV review has been brought to you by Woody the critic :D

....I'm waiting for some actual criticism.....

.....but since I don't watch TV, it'll just fall on deaf ears anyway.

What'dja say?

Probably should have taken a sick day tonight. I'm not particularly ill, though I did have a touch of the runs. I haven't been sleeping well lately and my eyelid is doing that twitchy thing that happens when you don't get enough rest and I'm having more brain farts than normal.

WW = I missed both Scorpion and Gotham but set it up to record Friday night when they repeat. LOVE Blacklist but know nothing about Lottery or Forever. I've been watching Intruders on BBC America and Outlander on Shotime. Both are ok, not great. Intruders is kinda hard for me to keep up with. Seems like BBC requires a little more from their veiwers than I'm used to giving.

So far my favorite new show is The Strain. Not sure why. It's completely unrealistic and all about vampires taking over NYC so probalbly not for you.

I wish all of the "techy/genius" shows weren't centered around people that can't remember the 80's but I guess the TV execs know their market and have to chase the advertising dollars.

BH - I hope you get to feeling better. You might want to get some charcoal for your gut just in case it's some kind of food poisoning.

Scorpion pilot episode was AMAZING. Best show i have seen in a while!!!

Intense, action packed, funny parts, even some heart warming moments... All packed into one show.

Its not perfect, but could become my new favorite show.

WATCH IT.
