Slash test requests - I grew my own bamboo forest for this.

Surely you knew that calling us dumb geeks and chickenshits for loving super steels was going to ruffle some feathers, right?

I believe it was not so much loving supersteels, but being afraid to use them.

So, we are still waiting for Houla to put his money where his mouth is.

I hear that Rocksteads are warrantied for damage caused by batoning through thick, aged bamboo..... 🤣

Most CPK knives have a rough use warrantee. My DEK1 has D3V steel and it impresses me every time that I put it to the test. I've even accidently smacked the edge against steel and there not be any damage to the edge of the blade. Anyone that rags on super steels doesn't know what they are talking about as far as my experience is concerned.

Be great if someone would post that link to temporary image host site, not starting no insta account.

I am the worst gardener on the planet, I bought a bunch of small plants in pots at a Sunday market, planted them and watered them for 6 months and they grew like weeds.
It may not matter due to your land situation, but be aware that bamboo can and will travel underground, and some pretty amazing distances.

I used to keep a patch of what we call pake bamboo that stays in the 1 1/2 inch diameter range, and works great as fishing poles.

Over time it was growing all over my yard and even in my neighbor's yard. I removed it, but it is a pain as it's so robust.

I also tried cutting with my Ontario SP53, and it was a disaster. Way too thick.

The Zomstro surprised me and did great. So does my Tramontina machetes, and KaBar Kukuri.

The BK-9, Woodsman, and SP-5 were ok, but it became apparent a thinner flat grind works better.

I only have smaller fixed blades in super steels that might work, but don't have the weight or length to make it easy.

The best way I find is a Silky saw, as it makes nice and clean, controlled cuts. It's not as fun as hacking though.

This is all about fun and nothing else.

If I was serious I would hire some earthmoving equipment and it would be over in 10 minutes.

Ziptie some chunks to a sawhorse and have your kids video you chopping at it with whatever you've got. We will drink beer and have fun watching anything, mostly.

That would be an easy set up to manage, safer and more repeatable/scientific.

I have been thinking about set ups, a standing slash from some quick trials pretty much depends on entirely on technique and not the blade; edge alignment etc.

Can we at least see a picture of your bamboo forest?

This thread is one big tease...

Five pages and five days and all Hoola has managed to do with any success is 1) start the thread and 2) vilify those who own high-end knives as “geeks” and “chicken shits”. I don’t even recall seeing a photo of the supposed bamboo patch, much less the knives to be used in this grand experiment. So far he’s over promised and under delivered on his initial post. Oh, and reply with childish name-calling/snark to anyone who’s called him on his non-progress. This thread has had some interesting elements, none of which however address the OP.
