Slipjoint questions

I would suggest trying to find a copy of "How To Make MULTI-BLADE FOLDING KNIVES," it is written by Eugene Shadley and Terry Davis. It will explain the workings of a slip joint. They are a different beast. I make knives just for fun and the first knives I made were slip joints, just stupid I guess. I to this day have never seen another person grind. Don't get down on yourself, because if I can do this pretty much anybody can

I just posted a reply. Here is an example of a couple slip joints I made.

Great looking knives Larry. I've looked for that book before, but at $195 used on Amazon I'll have to keep looking.

I ordered a chunk of malachite from eBay. Michael Hoover (redrummd) recommended it from a list of pieces I asked him about. He's going to slab it up for me. Fantastic! Guess I better get busy on the folder....

All the best, Phil

I have the book and its great for slip joints, I did not pay quite that much but they have gone up in price and value. The hard part is trying to keep in good shape. For $40 I would throw it on the shelf in the shop.

I saw that book on I beleive knife forum for either $75.00 or $80.00 yesterday or the day before. It is worth every bit of $80.00, you could study it and probably resale it for a nice profit. Check out that forum!

The book I saw was How to make folding knives. A great book on lockbacks!
The reason for the price is it is out of print and for some reason someone is noting letting it be reprinted. I have had 3 friends use my book and all 3 are making slip joints. In order to make a slipjoint you have to understand the components as they relate to each other. This book does it in terms that can be understood. It si an absolute great book. This is one of the first slipjoints I made.

Theres a ton of old slips out there with brass pins all around and probably more with nickel silver which is just a brass alloy. I wouldn't worry about the pivot pin wearing out on my first few. As things progress and you want to move to ss peening will get a little tougher so will wear resistance.
Ken.

After finishing my first slipjoint knife I documented the process I went through of designing another slipjoint. I pretty much followed Chris Crawford's tutorial on getting it all put together once I have my design done. Anyway you can check it out on my website at Slipjoint Design

Hi Fellas,

I believe I've got all the materials rounded up that I'll need to make my green eyed daughter's malachite scaled coke bottle folder for Christmas. I'm about to start cutting stuff out. Wish me luck.

How's everyone else doing?

All the best, Phil

Looks good, are you going to do an edge quench on the 1084 to get a hamon?? Let me know when you get to fitting the spring, I should have some pics to help at that point. I am fitting some springs this weekend, I have 4 of my EDC slip joints on the bench that I want to complete in next two weeks and I plan to take some pics along the way.

I have to dig around, I know I have some 1095 here otherwise I need to order some for my cokebottle.

Here's some of the stuff cut out. Tomorrow I'll play with the plexi-mock-up and shape up the metal parts. Then, I guess, I've got to commit and drill some holes.

Crap, I'm getting a late start seeing this thread. But, whatever, I'm in, too. Thanks for all the great information in this thread - it's coming at a perfect time.

Absolutely great info guys.. This is something I really want to get in to in the near future..

Thanks for the tip about checking the Great Lakes Water Jet forum out. I had no idea that slip joint contest was going on. How's that, 10 threads to watch ten guys make 10 slip joints. COOOOOOOL!!!
