Slipjoint questions

Thanks for the tip about checking the Great Lakes Water Jet forum out. I had no idea that slip joint contest was going on. How's that, 10 threads to watch ten guys make 10 slip joints. COOOOOOOL!!!

We will get this place kicking yet, some great stuff going on here.
I know I will be watching....... :D:thumbup:

TA,

Your thread about slip joint joints was pretty amazing. I had no idea there were that many fine nuances to the slip joint. You guys sure illustrated your investigation/exploration with photos of some AMAZING slip joints!

I'll be lucky, and consider myself successful, if I can get one made that simply opens and closes reasonably well. :o

Do you have any suggestions where a fella might be able to find some patterns for some of the old "original" slip joints? Those sod-busters, trappers and the copperhead are especially enticing. I especially like the copperhead in that it provides a bit of a guard like function for the user.

Thanks for joining in our thread and our fun!

All the best, Phil

I like the copperhead as well, I tried to put that into a knife a while back. I liked it so I kept it and still carry it today.

Phil,

I do not have any patterns, I make all my knives one of a kind. Have made them this way since I started making slip joints. When I start, I drill a whole in a piece of steel, and make the knife from there. If I want to make another knife the same, I just look at a photo, and make it. I have made over 400 slip joint knives this way now. So all the little problems you and the other guys here are going to go through making these knives. I have been there done that. And you will find out what Tony Bose means, when he says "If you are going to make slip joint pocket knives, you have better have the want to". They are some of the hardest knives to make. And to make well.

If they were easy old ladies would be making them.

I started making fix blade knives many years ago, and all that time I had no interest in making folders. But what happened along the way, was I would make miniature knives out of my scrap. This helped me a lot when I did start making slip joints. To grind out a smaller blade. Plus all the other skills I had some what acquired, like - filing - grinding - heat treating - polishing - pinning - finishing. To be able to make these knives by hand the way I do. And to progress like I have. Yes I have picked up a few pointers from Tony Bose. ( Thanks, Tony )But mostly I learned by doing it.

To get you some patterns, just go find some old knives and take them apart.
Like I said I do not have any.

OR....
I see you live in Hawaii,
You could send me a round trip plane ticket, and pay my expenses. And I will come over there and show you personally how to make them.....:D ( I'm serious )
Uh? Uh? What do you say? I never been to Hawaii, sure would like to?

The copper head in the other thread was made by Bill Ruple, great knife, from great maker.

So if I laugh at some of you, when your having problems, don't take it personally. Like I said done been there done that, got a T shirt for it. :D
And any one and all of you can do this, IF YOU DO NOT GIVE UP.
PRACTICE - PRACTICE - PRACTICE - PRACTICE - PRACTICE

Good luck to you all.

T.A. I could give you a hunting trip in Mississippi for some help

Maybe? - Maybe?
My daughter lives down that way, and I go down every couple years?
Might take you up on it? Have to see how things go?
I do appreciate the offer.

Take care.

How bout a hay ride to the Great Dust Bowl of West Texas?!? I'll pick you up in a John Deere 9629 pulling a red rider wagon (original, of course) and drag you down to Texas. I'll even throw an umbrella in to protect you from the sun. Or, a heavy coat if it's getting on towards winter.

What do you say? It's not Hawaii, but my wife and I just got back from there, and it sucks to no end. All sunny and 83 degrees every day, blue skies, blue waters, high cliffs, rain forests, amazing canyons and valleys, no wind more than an off shore 10 mph breeze.... YUCK!!! You can keep your Hawaii, Phil!

So, TA, want to come visit my neck of the woods? :D

No, in all seriousness, you have an amazing home, Phil. BEAUTIFUL. And everyone was so friendly it felt like Lubbock (except for the beautiful weather, no wind, no dirt, etc.). I hope to go back someday.

And Mr. Davison, you make amazing slip joints. I dream of the day I can make a slip joint with half the grace of your knives, and of the day I can own one!

nathan,

Thanks! for the compliments and fine offer, but I'm holding out to see if Phil can get me to Hawaii...... :D Man I would do that in a heart beat.

Todd, you are, of course most welcome. Unfortunately I am barely starting to rebound from 12 years of subsistence farming. Along the way I started a family to boot. What with my new city teaching job, I am just about able to (usually) afford to buy a tank of gas for my truck when it's needed. So, if you get here (sorry, no round trip ticket in the offing) I probably can pick you up at the airport and get you around town, probably.

In the mean time, we'll have to rendezvous here in cyber-space and celebrate our new friendship via less tangible means. Of course, my doorway into the netherworld of forum-ville just happens to be in the tropics. But then, your portal into the ethers has a world wide reputation too, what with Dorothy and all.

So give Auntie Em and Toto my regards, and, thanks for sharing your world class folders with us. Oh, by-the-way, don't laugh too loud or long!

All the best, Phil

Phil,

I do under stand completely, and I was messing with ya a little. ;)
In this day and age we are in, it is tough times for a lot of us, but I had to ask. :)
If I ever do get over there I will have to look you up.
Until then the old net work will have to do.

Will try to help you guys out were I can?

SO from the land of OZ, take care and good night.

Todd

P.S. - Will not laugh to hard, I do know how hard these are to make.

Rusty: That's a little better, but you forgot to include a pic of it closed. The lines of that sweet folder are to die for, especially, when it's closed! What materials is she made with? And, you had to add another tease too, didn't you? Using the Texarkana Bladesmith School certificate for a background. I'm doubly jealous now!

Todd: I was just at your site looking at all those immaculate folders you've made. Stupendous!

g-10 yellow of course 416 intrugral liner/bolsters and ats-34 ss, I use it every day for everything I can think of just to torture it. It needs to be sharpened and cleaned up but it is what it is.

Does anyone have a foolproof method for making the nail groove? I don't have a mill, and the dremel cutoff wheel seems like it would come out sloppy instead of crisp, clean and sharp.
