small fixed blade knives

I came across Blind Horse knives Lill Muk. The flowing lines look interesting and the size is right.

I don't really consider 4" to be a small fixed blade, to me that's 3" or less. Here are some of mine:

Russell Easler small hunter, amber stag scales.

Here's alittle WD Pease that's one of my favorite carries:

A Dan Cowles I comissioned a couple years ago, bark mammoth ivory, engraving by Chris Maloof.

This is a Pat Sheehan, very slick package, horn scales.

For a minimalist style here's a Fujisaka:

I definitely like the small fixed blades. Something nice about the simplicity.

I got a good price on the CS Pendleton mini hunter. I must say I liked this knife right away. The handle is slightly short, but gives a good grip because of the material. I will add a lanyard, that will give some extra controll.

The blade has a nice shape and is really sharp, VG 1 steel and the sheath is really good, it has good retention. Also the belt loop is removable. So for the money this is a good buy. A good choise for a pocketable fixed blade.

Hi all,

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Eisman, I agree with you to a point. For some weird reason, I find knives with blades longer than say.....3 7/8's" long falling into the LARGER knife field. Eisman, I REALLY like your collection of knives (especially) the Russell E. Hunter! You have excellent taste in knives. HW and 15.....very nice knives indeed! Hfinn, glad to hear you like the CS mini.

I too enjoy a smaller fixed blade. I'm surprised I haven't seen more from Jason wilder on here. This is my first custom knife from him and I really like it!

Another small fixed blade I really dig is the Boker Plus Grasshopper.

Super light weight at only 1 oz. 440C, titanium-coated. Comes with a Kydex neck sheath and ball chain. Blade length of 1-7/8" and 4-3/4" overall.

Hi all,

As I get older, I am discovering that small fixed blade knives are my favorite knives.
Please post pixs of your[SUB][/SUB] SMALL (four inch blade and under) FIXED blade knives.
I can't believe I missed the following thread on this awesome looking lil' TOPS beauty:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/783718-TOPS-BTK-Bird-amp-Trout-Knife

I really like the original Grohmann #1 Canadian Belt Knife although I wish it was just a 1/2" shorter in O.A.L.
That being said, my next new knife MUST have a handle that is at least 3.5" (three and a half) inches long.
I also would like my next knife to be no longer (in O.A.L.) than 8" (eight inches) however, shorter would be better. I just need a 3.5" handle. Thanks.

I'm going that way also buddy. My blade sizes are slowly shrinking for the most part. And I could be as happy as a pig in liquid fecal matter with just an Izula 2 many days. But with me it's always been the rational\semi irrational blade buying battle. On one hand I just want to get rid of most of my less practical cutting tools, then on the other hand I simply derive pleasure from whacking the hell out of an old dead tree, with a machete or whatever, for firewood. Even though I know that a saw or an axe is far more efficient. Sometimes I just toss my hands up and don't care, go with the flow so to speak. But I do have that dichotomy nagging me in the background now and then. I definitely do appreciate smaller fixed blades more these days though.

This thread is actually relevent to my interests as I'm very curious about small, fixed blade knives that could be considered "pocketknives." The idea of a fixed blade that looks good, made well and small enough to somehow have clipped into a sheath that is clipped inside my pocket sounds like something I would like to try. I have limited experience with fixed blade knives in general.

I always went for 4-6" bladed fixed blades myself until I bought a Dozier Canoe. Then I bought the Dozier Personal with the Wharncliffe blade design as I pretty much know the kinds of things I usually "cut". It's small and the Dozier kydex horizontal sheath is a dream in comfort and conceals if that is what you like. I just wear it and nobody notices it at all. I love this little knife and it is quite functional.

I have been experimenting with the Kabar Becker BK-14/BK-24 size and just slipping the sheath in my back pocket. It works that way as I really don't have much need for a neck knife. There are other models as well and I'm sure they work just as well.

My first "neck knife" was a little Condor with the wharncliffe blade design which I liked. It slipped easily into my pocket and is smaller than the BK-14/24 size. I just have trouble sharpening it and feel something is wrong with the heat treat. Most of their knives are easy to sharpen.

I am all over the place. Small knives are very useful & I can do most of what I need with them. 4"-6" are great when I want to do a lot or know I will really need it. Like upnorth the big stuff is just so much fun even if it is not needed. Yesterday I had a small tree branch (3"-4" dia) come down in the yard. I could have broke most of it or used a small saw. No not me I went and got my belt hatchet because I had not used it in a wile. Thinking I should get my 12" Ontario just because.

My 4" tree branch (pretty large actually) that fell in my yard (wind damage) was the first use of my Condor Pack Golok. Worked like a charm and really like the short machete choppers. They have pretty much replaced any need I have for a hatchet.

The thing about small fixed bladed knives are the handle size. Your hands haven't gotten smaller and I still pretty much want at least a comfortable 3-finger and hopefully 4-finger hold on a knife that I am using. The Bark River knives are good ones to look at and they are generally very good.

Hi guys,

Sharp....I'm gonna have to look into "Jason's" knives! Very nice indeed! Addy....there is just "something" about those Izula ll's. One day I gotta buy one. Oooh btw, how do you like your SA ? I've been considering buying a SA XD(M) 3.8" Compact `.45ACP LG&M, nice JW. I was looking HARD at JW's Nessmuk knife. UPNO...I hear you my friend, I too just "go with the flow" lol. 22...I will check out the Dozier.

Regards,
HARDBALL

These are all knives you could carry anytime, anywhere( at least where I live). Don't have anything bigger and don't see the need at this time. From left to right, Puukko with modified handle,Hultafors carbon blade,a custom made for me by a co-worker in bird and trout style, Boker, and a Little Squall by Hardedge Knives. Since I got the Little Squall it's quickly become my favourite!

Hi all,

Just an update. Well...I am still PULLING OUT MY HAIR! That is to say, despite a LOT of research time, I have yet been able to find "THE" perfect "Small Fixed Blade/EDC" knife that makes me say "that's THE one!". I've also been researching "Bird and Trout" type knives. I realize there is no such thing as "one" perfect knife but, I hope to find one that is close. I have been looking at "custom" makers recently but I'm finding that many makers are no longer taking orders (or prices have become too expensive). In addition, I'm having a rather difficult time trying to decide which TYPE of blade (style) I want (I really like the look of the "Canadian #1 Belt Knife" blade type). This much I've figured out.....since I have good size hands, the handle size is more important to me than blade length. The knife I have in mind must have a handle that is AT LEAST 3.75" long (if not four inches long). Perhaps a four inch handle-three inch blade (seven inches OAL) knife would be my best bet for EDC. At any rate, the search continues!

I feel your pain, brother. I've finally decided to just go with a custom knife as throwing $60 - $100+ apiece at multiple production knives which still didn't give me what I really wanted was becoming increasingly frustrating (and expensive). So I ordered my first custom knife yesterday; a small fixed blade damascus wharncliffe from fellow Texan Alan Davis. Depending on a couple final details it should still be under $200, which is considerably less than half of what I've spent on production knives in the past two years trying to find my "ideal" EDC.
