small fixed blade knives

Once you start carrying a fixed blade, you ain´t going back to folders. I aways carry a FB in the sheath, in the vertical position in my left front pocket. Folding knives may be slightly more practical, but fixed blades are just so much more capable.

I have grown so used to it that, sometimes, as I said before in the forums, I few underknifed with just a folder. I find the small fixed blade to be the simpler, stronger, better-rounded, safer EDC option.

I typically always carry fixed blades when and where I can. One fixed blade knife that I always carry all places is a Carter Cutlery Vex Clip neck knife. I love this little knife, and I am approximating that it is about 8" OAL. I can get a 4 finger grip if I choke up to the choil. But it is not as accessible as I want for an all around EDC choice. My place of work has a policy regarding knife carry as follows. Prohibits: "Any knife with a blade larger than that of a folding pocket knife..." It goes on do describe automatics and daggers as being prohibited. I know that this folding knife description is very vague, and open to interpretation. So I always carry sometimes rather large folders, so at least I comply to the folding knife that fits the "folding pocket knife" definition. But the way that the policy is written does not prohibit a fixed blade knife, as long as the blade length is less than that of a folding pocket knife. So here is my strategy. I will carry a very large folder with at least a 4" blade in my left pocket. I never intend to use this blade, it will only be used as a measuring device if I ever get questioned about the fixed blade knife that I am carrying in my RH hip pocket inside of a pocket sheath. If I am ever questioned about the fixed blade knife, I will then produce the pocket folding knife with a longer blade. Problem solved!

Over the past 1.5 years, I have been accumulating very expensive folders that you can thump on if the need ever arises, because of this policy. And I carry all of them in my rotation. In fact, my $45.00 Kershaw Diskin Hunter is probably more capable than my $450+ Strider SMF, if and when my life depends on it.

I will report back to you how I make out. The worst case scenario is that I get fired. Carrying small fixed blade knives (or even large ones) does not violate any laws in my state. So I will have access to the internet if this all goes terribly wrong.:p

TOPS has a lot of small knives. This is one that I've been interested in, along with several of their others. People complain about the names that they give their knives but the small ones mostly have pretty innocent names.

I was considering a knife in the 6.5" range so it would fit in my jeans pockets, plus I like I keen point and if it is going to replace or supplement a folder then I want a relatively thick blade.

< seems that TOPS doesn't like a little free advertising >

bdmicarta have you looked at the Tops Lil Bro ? I carried one of them for a while . VERY stout little knife with micarta handles .
I switched to the Magnum Bear Cub two years ago because about half the tie I carry just one knife . So I wanted a thinner blade that would slice better . But the Lil Bro is one tough knife .

Got an idea. I kind of like the looks of the Boker Rhino, but would prefer it a bit pointier. So why not get one and start grinding it to something like this:

You have given this alot of thought. Finding the right knife is part of the fun. Here is what you should do next. Make some cardboard cut outs of your top picks or your own design. Then make a wooden knife. Don't forget the handle thickness. This should really help you make up your mind. If you use your design contact one of the many makers here and talk to them on the phone or email.

I love the simplicity - or perhaps purity is a better word - of the design, ISKski. Nothing on it isn't knife. :)

If you don't mind my asking, about what did it run you? You can PM me if you don't want it public.

I've got a TOPS Tibo and it's a pretty nice little knife in that size range. I just wish it came with handles to give it a bit more grip.

I really like this one, 155440.

I'm planning to make a small knife for myself. If you don't mind, could you tell me the blade width at the widest point, and the thickness of the steel?

Really nice.

Also, I googled Nick Jerry and couldn't find him. Does he have a website?

My favorite knife at the moment and my edc
