Once you start carrying a fixed blade, you ain´t going back to folders. I aways carry a FB in the sheath, in the vertical position in my left front pocket. Folding knives may be slightly more practical, but fixed blades are just so much more capable.
I have grown so used to it that, sometimes, as I said before in the forums, I few underknifed with just a folder. I find the small fixed blade to be the simpler, stronger, better-rounded, safer EDC option.
I typically always carry fixed blades when and where I can. One fixed blade knife that I always carry all places is a Carter Cutlery Vex Clip neck knife. I love this little knife, and I am approximating that it is about 8" OAL. I can get a 4 finger grip if I choke up to the choil. But it is not as accessible as I want for an all around EDC choice. My place of work has a policy regarding knife carry as follows. Prohibits: "Any knife with a blade larger than that of a folding pocket knife..." It goes on do describe automatics and daggers as being prohibited. I know that this folding knife description is very vague, and open to interpretation. So I always carry sometimes rather large folders, so at least I comply to the folding knife that fits the "folding pocket knife" definition. But the way that the policy is written does not prohibit a fixed blade knife, as long as the blade length is less than that of a folding pocket knife. So here is my strategy. I will carry a very large folder with at least a 4" blade in my left pocket. I never intend to use this blade, it will only be used as a measuring device if I ever get questioned about the fixed blade knife that I am carrying in my RH hip pocket inside of a pocket sheath. If I am ever questioned about the fixed blade knife, I will then produce the pocket folding knife with a longer blade. Problem solved!
Over the past 1.5 years, I have been accumulating very expensive folders that you can thump on if the need ever arises, because of this policy. And I carry all of them in my rotation. In fact, my $45.00 Kershaw Diskin Hunter is probably more capable than my $450+ Strider SMF, if and when my life depends on it.
I will report back to you how I make out. The worst case scenario is that I get fired. Carrying small fixed blade knives (or even large ones) does not violate any laws in my state. So I will have access to the internet if this all goes terribly wrong.
