small fixed blade knives

My EDC fixed blade is a Dozier Personal wih a wharncliffe blade in CPM 154 which I really like. One look at it and I knew I had to take it home. The handle is just a tad under 3.75" long and is just barely a 4-finger knife for me. You have to decide what you are going to use it for. If you're cutting stuff along the trail, then a solid hold is probably essential, but for urban use, mine is just fine. You give up a little carry convenience with larger handles. I tend to like folders that have a 4" or slightly longer closed length. AG Russell typically carries a good selection of Dozier customs that are available for immediate shipment. Most will be in D2.

Hi guys,

SCW,

Awesome Bro! I am truly happy for you. I have little doubt that you'll be more than pleased with your purchase.
I have been checking out Mr. Davis site and his knives look excellent! Mr. "D" is on my short list. 22....I have spent half this morning with tape measure in hand measuring a pile of knives in an attempt to figure out what the heck I am looking for in the way of a new knife. I KNOW I want a "four finger" knife size handle. I love my lil' custom Nick Rossi (made from File) knife which Nick made for me in 2007. This lil' knife measures just a tad under 6.5" OAL. The blade is 3" long. However the handle is just a little bit too short for my XXL Paw and is a "three finger knife" due to the shape of the Choil and slightly curved tang. I find it amazing how just a HALF INCH in handle length can make a World of difference in how a knife fits/feels in the hand. At this point, let me recommend, especially to any new BF members to not take lightly this point/information regarding handle size. I am now convinced that a HALF INCH of proper handle size is more important than wasting time agonizing over an inch (or two) of blade length when trying to decide on a knife.

Regards,
HARDBALL

Sadly they have no Dozier wharnecliffe knives available at this time.

I picked mine up at the Blade Show two years ago. I found it a tad expensive; then I noticed that they had built in the GA sales tax. Then last year I noticed another BF member had bought essentially the same rig with the blue G-10 handle that is very eye catching. I love this little knife. Guess one just needs to order one, hope one pops up on Monday on the Dozier site, or cross your fingers and go to a knife show where Bob Dozier is attending.

Handle dimensions are very important for a using knife. Too small and you'll leave it home and too large it will be a pain to carry as an EDC. The Dozier horizontal sheath makes the whole deal work for me. I find them to be just amazingly user friendly, fast, and practical.

2.5" to 2.75" works for me, but I'm a townie, and my cutting needs tend toward opening annoying plastic packaging.

I've tried smaller, and larger, and I'm with the folks who say that the handle is at least as important as the blade length.

I've never field-dressed an animal, or participated in bushcraft activities, but for my needs, a small comfortable knife can be used in place of a larger one.

But it does take a little longer.

I'd really like to carry a 3-3.5" fixed blade, but a couple things stop me. First is around here a fixed blade on your belt would attract a lot of attention at work, that's probably the primary issue and I don't typically wear a belt, but that's fixable with some kydex. Second is it's so hard to find a fixed blade in that size that has a full sized comfortable handle, so many of them get downsized with the blade too small. It's hard to find one with a small handle that is comfortable for extended use. A good example is the Nimravus and Nimravus cub, I love the cub sized blade, but they scaled the handle down too small.

I just got a couple of little Anza Knives fixed blades in the mail yesterday and I'm pretty impressed so far. Well-made, very comfortable in hand, and surprisingly affordable. The smaller one is a PK1 (2" cutting edge) and the larger one is an NK (3" cutting edge.)

I carry this lil joint I got from Nick Wheeler - 6 inches overall

I love smaller fixed blades. I sold off all but one folder and have been focusing on edc fixed pieces lately.

This is my main edc, kwaiken by josh mason. 7.25 oal carried in a red kydex sheath.

I have another four fixed blades on order from various makers. I need help.

^ Nope, not a sawblade its a solid piece of 1084 carbon steel - Im not 100 % on this but I believe the texture was made using rusted dies in a power hammer...

Heres a better look at it..

I would like to thank HARDBALL for starting this thread. It has really gotten my juices flowing. I think that the fixed blade knife is far more capable than a folding one. This thread has opened my eyes to the possibilities of carrying a fixed blade in a pocket. Thanks again to the OP and to all who have contributed.

Hi McVeyMac,

Thank you Sir for your very kind words regarding my thread. I am most happy if this lil' thread has been helpful to you and hopefully to both long time and future BF members. I still can't quite figure out WHY it is that I like smaller fixed blade knives so much. I think it's something in Man's DNA lol. My search continues for a new EDC. I'm pretty sure I'll be going "custom" again. At any rate, yes indeed, THANK YOU to all who have contributed to this thread.

Regards,
HARDBALL

This Phillip Patton hunter is my favorite at the moment but the Richard J and JKs certainly hold their own.

This thread is actually relevent to my interests as I'm very curious about small, fixed blade knives that could be considered "pocketknives." The idea of a fixed blade that looks good, made well and small enough to somehow have clipped into a sheath that is clipped inside my pocket sounds like something I would like to try. I have limited experience with fixed blade knives in general.

Once you start carrying a fixed blade, you ain´t going back to folders. I aways carry a FB in the sheath, in the vertical position in my left front pocket. Folding knives may be slightly more practical, but fixed blades are just so much more capable.

I have grown so used to it that, sometimes, as I said before in the forums, I few underknifed with just a folder. I find the small fixed blade to be the simpler, stronger, better-rounded, safer EDC option.

I switched over to a fixed blade carry a few years back . This has been my EDC for the past two years now .

3" blade , .156" thick , 6 5/8" over all

As others have said , I can't see going back to a folder after carrying a little fixed blade .
