What a rollercoaster of emotion for a small community. Friday morning a multi-agency task force descended on the county with multiple search warrants. The prime search area North of town swarmed with agents and investigators from TBI, FBI, TSP, Sheriff's departments, mobile forensic labs, command center, two evidence vans, helocopters, cadaver dogs and handlers, emergency management dive teams and of course area press reporters.
Teams searched the two housed and mobile home on the property, several outbuildings and began setting up forensic archeology units in several locations.
Five vehicles were impounded, loaded and hauled away for close search in Nashville.
Officials were tight lipped to locals and the press, but it didn't take much comparing of notes for us to figure out who the property belonged to, run a VINES check on the owner, trace his recent movements and figure out that he was arrested, later announced as "agrivated assault and possibly other charges", but unrelated to the search. In under 24 hours he had been transferred to a facility in an adjacent county "because of local jail overcrowding". More VINES checking shows that a known associate of his is currently housed in our county jail awaiting final sentencing "15 years to life".
TBI Director gave a short, uninformative presser yesterday. But as luck would have it, an Atlanta Fox News reporter who was here working for a local station in 2011, Will Nunley, picked up the news and began reporting for us. And jumped in his car, driving in from Atlanta last night, arriving here this morning in time to shower and head t othe search site. He has been keeping us informed all day of every movement, observation of search areas, and interviews with officials and locals.
We have been watching events all day. A dive team descended into an abandoned well. A THP chopper landed, delivered some people then lifted off. More cadaver dog teams. And now word that further teams, "VIPERS", are coming in from five other states, from Alabama, Texas, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Missouri to assist. We have strong rain coming and a winter storm warning from now thru Monday, but officials insist that they will proceed.
What a long strange trip it's been. And we aren't there yet. And yes, every store already had posters, cars still have missing persons posters in windows, signs on most every streetcorner, pink ribbons on nearly every streetlamp and utility pole, mailboxes and home porches.
