Snark all day

Winter seems to be closing in around these parts. I'm looking for a large knife that will, combined with a folding saw and a multitool, do everything I need to do out there. I'm planning to put in a few overnighters, maybe a weekend or two, you guys know my stomping grounds (nothing too remote, I even have cellphone reception most of the time).

I'm deciding between the BK-9 and the BK-4. I'm leaning a bit more towards the Machax, because it has a longer blade, better sheath and, to be honest, I've always been eager to try it out. It also costs less than the 9. Is there anything that would put me off buying the 4 and make me get the 9 despite the fact that it's more expensive, has a shorter blade and a not-so-great sheath?

It has a larger "sweet spot" basically the whole blade, whereas the 4 is a much smaller sweet spot. I've never actually been able to find it, I've heard reports it's just behind the forward recurve. I can neither confirm nor deny these reports.

Trying to pick a good fixed blade for under 200 bucks. dont want esee. maybe a swamp rat rmd or rodent 6... RMD seems better for edc but the rodent 6 looks like a monster... i just dont like the thumb guard.... What other brands do beckerheads go after?

What kinds of things do you do with your edc? A 5-6" blade seems like overkill for me personally since most of what I'm doing is opening mail, boxes, cutting up cardboard, etc... Obviously you may have other needs. My Spyderco Persistance or Case Trapper see the most time in pocket.

If you're looking for a fixed blade, I think the Fallkniven F1 would be excellent, especially in Florida with rust being more of an issue. I like the S1 overmthe F1 by a very slight margin as an outdoors knife, but the F1 seems more practical for edc (I actually just did a comparison thread recently).

I've never owned any bussekin knife, but I've always been drawn to the Rodent Solution for an edc blade. Cost and thick edge out-of-the-box is only what's stopped me from getting one.

I know you said you don't want ESEE, any reason why not? I love my Izula II - another reason I haven't bought the Rodent Solution. I feel like my Izzy II can do anything it can equally well at about half the cost.

really for most my needs my bk11 is perfect and IS MY EDC knife. just like to have the option of carrying a larger "medium" blade knife. between the 11,14,16,2,13,and 9. Ontario SP8, regular machetes, hatchet, leatherman and saw i have most knife NEEDS covered. this one seems like a good add on to the mix

Esee, ahhh. i prefer the bk11/14 blade to izulas, and theres something about the way the esee 6 felt in my hand. i didnt care for the ergos.

Fallknivens seem ok but lack the flare the swamp rats have and really i like the rats name better lmao but i am contemplating getting an f1 one day.

Im not wanting another 4 inch or smaller blade at the moment and not wanting anything over 6 inches.

This blade is smaller than the bk15, is one to think thats too big for edc?

This knife is why I started making knives. Finished it yesterday morning.
It works.

Izula II ergos will be completely different than the 6. Too big for edc? Eh, matter of opinion really. Depends on your "everyday".

On another note, got to shoot a friends S&W M&P 22. Very nice.

Ate up almost every type of ammo (5-6 different kinds) we shot. Only had a couple FTE with some kinda Winchester (not white box) out of probably 500+ rounds. Not bad for a .22 semi-auto.

I personally vastly prefer the 9, but I suppose it comes down to what you want to do with it. I don't think the Machax is really significantly longer than the 9. I took a picture of my pair somewhere... They were pretty comparable in length. What do you want to do with it? 9 is a better chopper, and my favorite Becker. 4 is, well, the Machax. It's pretty darn cool. I just don't like it as much.

Meat, how the hell are you man.

Pretty good. Still having loads of fun in my job, making enough money to live on and afford a few new toys every month. Still single, even looks like I messed up a pretty good opportunity today :D

Thinking about getting a BK-4.

Hey Meat, where the heck you been? You going to be around chat some more now?

I just got back from a weekend at the Randall Farm for a Primitive Skills Class. I learned how to convex and now my 16 will cut you when you look at it. It was a good time and I got to meet several cool people.
