Pretty glad I started growing a beard at the end of October.

Get used to it. They outnumber us, and breeding patterns suggest nothing but more of the same in future.

Have you seen the Movie "Idiocracy" ? Man it really puts things in perspective.

I'm at the tail end of the movie Elysium, and strangely, I'm rooting for the bad guys.

I must hate Matt Damon (insert your own offensive descriptor here) just that much, LOL

I didn't like the movie. Its a politically motivated BS flick. I didn't mind the premise, but they might has well have tagged real world names on the characters. What a crock.

I didn't care for it either. Thought it was a little heavy handed with the political message as well.

Missouri Meerschaum:

Ran a few bowls of cherry blend through her. She's a good smoker:

Cobs are arguably the best smokers, and missouri meershaums are the best of those.
Cobs do impart a sweetish flavor to the smoke, but it is subtle and not bad. If you smoke aromatics, you probably won't notice that. They're downside is thee fall apart quickly because the tobacco juices and condensation break the cob down over time. Fortunately, they are cheap. Real meerschaums are as cool and dry as a cob, but are more pricey, and have no real flavor other than seasoning. There is one type of wood that is as porous and smokes as cool and dry. It is expensive though. Its a Savinelli Punto Oro Corallo. Supposedly only one block of briar in ten thousand make can be used for these (marketing hype, I think) but they are the best I have ever smoked. Not real cheap though.

the ability to fit two whole pork shoulders

Or something like that. I don't have a pipe but they look cool.

someone who asks 'do you mind if I smoke'? and then doesn't get upset when you say yes. ;-)
But seriously, if I were to smoke anything it would be an occasional pipe. I'm sure there a many technical details that combine to make a pipe that 'smokes better' than another, and ways to detect that at the user-end. Dunno what any of those things might be.

Next time you go in there, if you've got a half hour to kill, find an employee, have them get one of the department managers, and make an offer. Or ask what would be the least they'd take. You'd be surprised, even at that place. They don't want stuff sitting on shelves, but unless you bring it to their attention, or Corporate finally issues the move order, they'll just sit there. You might even get a better deal than when they red-tag them; have you seen what they're trying to sell 40GB IDE hard drives for?! All they can do is say "No". But if you're lucky, you'll own one or two or all of them for a bargain price. And then you can send me one in thanks for this tip.

Thanks Granite, next time I can catch someone in the camp/hunt department I will give it a try.

Hey folks,

I think I've mentioned that Christine and I have been climbing in the Tennessee/Georgia area for the last few weeks. Well, during our rest days we've been checking out some of the local sites including Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park. At the park we were both surprised to see many of the products commemorating this battle were made offshore. We also saw other items in support of US troops at various other stores were also made offshore.

We both thought this was odd as we felt these items should be made in the US. Are we just being overly sensitive (typical Canadians) about this?

I'm not trying to start any political discussion - just saying that it seemed odd to us as visitors to the US.

Unfortunately, this isn't as funny as it should be...

what makes a 'good smoker'?

Well, I suppose that its a matter of what a person desires, but it is generally regarded to be, good draw, cool smoke, dry smoke, no overheating and/or significant heat build up. If you don't smoke, then I would venture say there is no such thing as a good smoker. My 2 cents. YMMV

"American Freedom"....to buy stuff at (insert giant consumer goods store here)'s low, low prices. Yeah....poignant, for sure. Corporations & shareholders want to profit, and most people don't have the wherewithal or discretionary funds to make things otherwise, at least that's how it seems to me. On the other hand, this forum is rich with craftsmen & women (and even some large corporations) who make all kinds of things right here at home.
From Northern Exposure (not exact) - "Lots of things get gone; wooly mammoths, saber-toothed tigers....the way I see it, that's the lay of the land".

And for those uneducated in the ways of meat....

The pork butt is cut from the upper part of the shoulder... i.e. "higher on the hog"
The pigs actual "butt" provides us with ham.

And, as said by several:

I like pork butts and I can not lie...
