Yea a hollow grind would be a pain i imagine.

But i havent used a razor blade to shave since i got out the Army. I just use clippers now. So these could just as well be FFG.

well, a FFG is probably harder on hard steel since the belt would have no cushion and heat up even more with the platen.
Aw, they'll be a fun project. :D

The very fact that they exist in this form suggest that razors are often ground hard anyway, probably because of the deep asymmetrical hollow grinds. But handmade razors are a speciality within knifemaking. You might ask Butch's for some advice on how to go about turning them into knives. Of course the symmetrically ground friction folder is a pretty good idea in either case.

Re: beer
yes. that happened.

So what do you think would be the easiest grind for these?

And can i ask who Butch is?

Thanks Daizee, Maybe i should start thinking things out a little more before jumping into them HAHA... I still would have bought these for 20 bucks though even if i knew in advance that getting them sharp was going to be difficult. I already expected id have to send them out to be ground. But now it sounds like it might be difficult to find someone willing to put an edge on them.

Was he able to even hear the applause, you know, after shaving off his ears?

He kept his ears but lost a fair bit of scalp.

I only use regular razors on my head but I do have this one lump. It's normally not a problem but once I managed to shave a nickle sized chunck of skin right off the top of it.

I'm gonna have to stop allowing pictures of my workbench being such a mess. What a disgrace.

You of all people should know that workbenches are supposed to be cluttered...

Ok, I kind of lied. There was no beer involved in my evenings libations. However vodka has been consumed. While watching Game of Thrones. Just started the show so I'm on Season 1 Episode 1. My god the amount of breasts on this show would make Tyson's jealous!

Tradewater, super nice job on that sheath it looks damn near professional! (I'm guessing Kitchen Help stitched it? :D)

Todd, that workbench isn't bad. Next time I'm in Springfield I'll take a picture of my brother's (and the one I use too) work bench. It will make you cringe and systematically shart your pants.

Apparently Expendables 3 was announced and yeah they found MORE out of work action heroes to cast. Not sure who they were able to get but there is that!

I just scored a Daizee Dashi. Not a Biru but considering I also have the 11 around my neck, ka-barley in my bag(s), P-51 (that the right number?) in my wallet and church keys stashed in random places around the house I didn't REALLY need another bottle opener.

Speaking of bottle openers, I found the Ka-Bar bottle opener with the USMC F/U handle on the river. Might order one.

The Ka-Barley... I have one in my day pack, I've also given away about 10 of them. There are 3 of them floating around a couple bars in St. Louis when I gave them to the bartenders. They love them. I also have given away 4-5 decks of the cards, and 9-10 of the Lake Effect snow scrapers. They aren't the BEST scraper but in a pinch they are handy.

How much did you find it on the river? Only reason I ask is on GPKNIVES they are $5 right about. I normally pick them up in stacks of 5 when I need to get a couple. They are handy little bastards!

So, I have this problem. It isn't really a problem but it's a concern. Not like "I think my testicle fell off" or anything like that. I'm apparently moving to Rapid City, South Dakota for a few weeks (At least 7 with a possibility of 12, and maybe longer) which is kind of awesome and kind of not. But it's for a sh*tty reason. My uncle works for Rug Doctor. He has for YEARS. Anyway he is having a hip replaced and so he doesn't lose his route I'm going to take it over while he is recovering. Now the concerning part. They want to hire me on, full time. When I come back out here from South Dakota, they want to give me a local route. Which means the job I've basically dedicated my life to for the last 6 years is done. I'd still be able to pick up an odd job here or there interpreting but my schedule would be no where near as free as it is now to do it.

All of that gets coupled with the fact it's a very physically demanding job. Those Rug Doctor machines aren't light. Neither are all of the chemicals that go with them. That is basically exactly opposite of the job I have now which is physically not strenuous at all but is mentally and emotionally taxing. Wages is another thing, the job I do now is WELL compensated, where as with rug doctor its actual full time work with not bad pay but it includes benefits.

There is also the fact I turned in my application to GPKnives before all of this started to come about. So they may call in which case, do I take THAT full time job when I get back from South Dakota, which may or may not pay as well as Rug Doctor, buuuuuut... It's GPKnives...

Well look at that, last time i checked the river store for the Ka-barley they didnt have any.

I dont really need another bottle opener either but its hard not to grab on of those simply because it's a Ka-bar.

On another note, i wish i didnt miss out on the beckerhead dog tag bottle openers. Those look pretty cool.

On one more note. The new shows, "Mixology" and "Surviving Jack" are pretty funny.

I have had several physical jobs not counting the military, down to literally digging ditches for telephone companies, climbing and working on wind turbines all day, placing telephone polls, directional boring, painting houses, even planting big palm trees for a nursery....

And i have had physically easy but stressful jobs as well like running an office for a construction company, doing all payroll and purchase orders, handling hours worked on jobs, Etc. And was even in charge of all the shipping and receiving for an entire warehouse for FPL which was at the time a fortune 100 company and i was shipping millions in parts every week.

I no longer work anymore, and prolly never will unless its a hobby type profession or someone's paying me cash off the books....

But if i was going to look for a job again id take the physically demanding work over the mentally stressful work any day of the week bud. When its time to go home from them jobs, the work is over, when you go home from the stressful jobs your mind is still going all night because you have so many more responsibilities.

Mel Gibson, Kelsey Grammar and I believe Wesley Snipes.

I wanted a few too and forgot about it. When I saw the topic again and opened it, the guy had already closed ordering down. I found the openers online for cheap, so I was thinking about ordering some if I can find a place to engrave them fairly cheap.

I've one moderately physically taxing before. I sold and delivered oriental rugs, the ones that start out 2'x3' and go up to 33'x100' of wool on wool and weigh in excess of 700 lbs and take 5 guys to carry them. The work I have now though, while it is mentally taxing it's also kind of awesome. I mean outside of doctors how many people can say they have seen a human brain inside a person's head, or can say they have held a human heart in their hands, or can stand in a court room and be called upon as an expert witness on language, or have the responsibility that goes with interpreting for a person on trial for murder, if I screw up they can literally lose their life... It's kind of awesome the job I have. In the field I work though I get looked down on because I've never been to college, I've don't have a bachelors or a masters or a doctorate, I don't have letters after my name the reason I'm so damn good at my job is cause I've been signing for almost 30 years. Well to be technical it's 28 years. The reason I get the hard to understand people is cause I didn't learn the language from a book, I learned it as a second first language.

Sorry I'm rambling. This is weighing quite heavily on me the last couple days. I've been mulling it over and I'm just really confused. I love interpreting but it is such a feast or famine occupation and working for Rug Doctor will be consistent. It comes with benefits (insurance, company car, PTO, sick days) but it is less money (example worked 8.5 hours last week, made $900) which just doesn't happen when I'm not interpreting.

Did you find the same ones? Is there a minimum? Id just want 1 or 2, if there is no minimum would you mind sending me the link?

I was thinking of getting some silver ones and then just try etching onto them myself LMAO Then i could put my WW logo on one side too, i didnt search more than the 1st page of google but the silver one i seen was like 15 bucks each.... Screw that.

C-bear -

One option would be to not to commit to RD Full-time until after you help your uncle out and see how you like it. If you end up not liking it, you can always tell them "Thanks, but no thanks" when it's time to go back to MO. Keep the signing in the wings and maybe work a few side gigs while in SD at hospitals in the evenings/weekends when you're not doing RD. Surely RD doesn't expect you to work 24/7.

As far as not having letters behind your name, ignore the fools. If that's not completely possible, start using VSLMI, for "Variable Sign Language Master Interpreter". When someone asks what it is, tell'em you're trained in a variety of colloquial sign language dialects, rather than a single, rote-memory, schoolyard version that is "taught" in schools. I can even gin you up a certificate that proves it. :D

Google aluminium dog tag bottle opener. I'm not sure if you can etch aluminum with the setup you have? I found places that would send just a few and some that had minimums of 50 or more.
